I now know why my kids always plug their phones into their computers-for back up. My wife and I bought these back in may and just added music and that was the last time either of us plugged into Itunes. My update went off without a flaw aside from the youtube thing which I agree the new one is way better. Her's wiped everything, prom pics, grad pics, contacts, music and apps. I was able to restore it to factory settings and then do the only back up we had from may 27th. Is there a possibility, like in a hard drive of a pc that this stuff is still somewhere in the phone? I am just starting to learn this phone more so since 5 am this morning when we discovered this issue. Any ideas would help and yes, we will back them up weekly from now on! Thank you.

Assuming you have iCloud turned on, it should have more recent back up, plus last 1000 photos (not video).

Guess who's sleepin on the couch tonight! :p

I kid. But to answer your questions, unless the photos were exported using iPhoto or a similar Windows program, they're gone. Were they all on the Camera Roll? Contacts would be backup on iCloud. Music bought from iTunes can be re downloaded or have to be re added through syncing with the computer. Music that wasn't bought from iTunes will have to be added through pc syncing. Same with the apps.

Looks like they are gone. You should always backup by connecting to iTunes before any iOS update.
