My house media server has roughly 3500 songs, most of which I don't listen to very often. My MacBook however, has about 675 which is what I sync to my iPhone as well.

18898 in a variety of bit rates, mostly 256kbps and some 320kbps. I do also have some 128kbps but I'm trying to eliminate those with better versions, whilst doing away with DRM at the same time.

I still have about 1600 drm'ed songs to upgrade. :(

27330 songs 86:07:04:55 total time 732 GB

Including duplicate MP3's for mobile.

Mp3
4542, 15:09:35:35 total time 31.54 GB

Mostly Apple Lossless, but with hard drives becoming so inexpensive in the last year or two, there's no advantage Squeezing an extra 15-20% capacity using Apple Lossless in order to keep a large library of full rate copies, which merely creates a time wasting, need to expand, conversion step when burning to CD.
OR HAVING AND KEEPING TRACK OF THREE KINDS OF FILE FORMATS FOR EACH SONG! APPLE LOSSLESS, .AIFF and MP3.
Now I just import all songs as .AIFF and then make another mp3 copy for mobile and ipod use.

Mp3's get 192 VBR smart encodings for ipod and/or LONG 60-90 track mp3 favorite discs for the car.

TIP use, view> view option> "KIND" for a column that displays aiff or mp3, ACC etc for libraries with multiple song file types. Makes organizing and creating playlists and smart playlists that are MP3/AIFF/AAC exclusive, MUCH EASIER!

quality doesnt really bother me as my hearing is useless lol

thats not all of it but thats all i put on computer as i used to have a 30 gig ipod, i know if started reripping stuff i would get 1000s of duplicates and they annoy me no end so havent bothered

Mean song length's easy to compute. Here's how I did it:
Click the time display, to get an exact total time
Convert the total time to seconds (minutes * 60, hours * 3600, days * 86400)
Divide by the total number of songs
The result will be in seconds

I cant ever listen to it all, there is tons of stuff I haven't even listened to once yet. I didn't download most of it, rather traded for it. Kinda swap external drives and trade music. Some of it was bought from iTunes, some was ripped from CD's I own also, some downloaded.

I only have a few hundred songs on mine at a time. In order to prevent song rot I cleanse it regularly. A few thousand, that is pretty beefy.

<snip> In order to prevent song rot I cleanse it regularly.

Song rot? Hope this is not true.
I've been secretly imagining such a thing... trying to avoid screwing up or loosing a very large 750GB music which I have been laboriously collecting from CD sources. Since I copied complete hard drives over and over a few times while upgrading from 200GB-400-500-750GB finally to 2TB dual drives, I wonder if any of the information is getting lost or corrupted through some agent which I have overlooked, like a bad capacitor or other electrical component in a 9 year old AD/DA converter?

I know that CD media goes bad, for sure, and "rots" Especially in humid environments, and the micro layer of alluminum can rapidly turn to Aluminum Oxide dust by infiltration of air through the edges of poorly sealed media or scratches on the label side. Or perhaps micro cracks from stresses on CD discs that get pried off a tight Jewel Case Hub?

Vapor deposited aluminum in an oxygen and water rich environment (Earth) has got to be about the worst material pick to store digital info on. Even new commercial discs can be full of holes, observable if you hold a CD in front of a bright light!

I'm sure almost nobody who has that many songs purchased even a large percentage from the iTunes Store.

My library is presently:
5321 items in "Music": 28.14 GB
52 in "Movies": 33.40 GB
125 episodes in "TV": 45.74 GB
76 podcast episodes: 1.92 GB
51 items/27 audiobooks: 3.25 GB

If we remove Podcasts, I have 5549 items in my library.

My iTunes "Purchased" playlist contains 1729 items, 59.49 GB. Most of the storage space is TV shows, most of the items are music. For awhile, I maintained a manual "Free Downloads" playlist, so I could keep track of free vs. paid for. I didn't update it for about a year, but a quick attempt at updating it again shows that, when I do the math, I paid for 988 items. (Although it looks like some are duplicates from upgrading to iTunes Plus that it didn't wipe out the original songs correctly.) I'd say about 2/3 of the music was purchased as whole albums, 1/3 as individual tracks. (223 albums in those 988 items; although this includes audiobooks, movies, and TV shows in the 'album' and 'item' counts.)

So of my library, about 18% are ones I paid for through the iTunes Store. Another ~20% were free iTunes Store downloads. The rest were ripped from CD/DVD or Audiobooks bought direct from Audible's website. (Probably half my audiobooks.)

I've got 7351 songs in my library (not counting video, etc). Lots of purchased music between Amazon / iTunes. Of all that music, I only have 22 DRM'd songs left in the library!! Once Apple updates those, i'll be completely DRM free.

I'd say 90% of my music is legally purchased or ripped from my old CDs.

100% legit, I have the CDs and jewel cases for every single one of them. Why yes, I *DO* have several boxes of jewel cases in the closet. It's wild how much 439 albums can weigh.

I just wish that it would be legit to download the stuff I have on vinyl. I own the music, but the thought of getting a turntable, the software, the cabling, the labeling, and the labor. Ugh. But I have some classic stuff in there that was never put on CD. Classic to me that is. ;)

Well, time for an update, as I now have more than will fit on my 30 GB iPod.

Selecting just the "Music" tab gives the numbers in my title: 5737 items, 34.39 GB.

When I exclude Music Videos, "Digital Booklets" and iTunes LPs, that drops to 5596 items, 27.63 GB. Which, thanks to unusable space on the old third-generation iPod, is still too much for it. (If I converted my higher-bitrate stuff, it would fit.)

I have 68 movies taking up 60.94 GB (I have about twice that many on a dedicated movie server.)

139 TV episodes, taking 69.26 GB. (I just purged all the free downloaded episodes/recaps/teasers of shows I don't really care about.)

Finally, 28 audiobooks using up 3.6 GB.

I keep finding insane deals on eBay and Amazon for cheap cds which I either lost or are worn out...id like to have a physical and digital copy.

Wow this is quite impressive. I don't think I even know this many songs.

My iTunes Library contains 1471 Songs at the moment, all purchased from the iTunes Store. Never found the time to rip my CD's and I don't think it's worth it since I don't have that many that I'm still listening to.

I do have however about 1500 Vinyls which I yet have to digitalize. Since that is a real PITA, I think I'll wait since I can effort someone else to do it. :p

It still wouldn't fit. Besides, what's the point? Seeing a folder with lots of items in it is meaningless. It also depends on how the folder is organized. My library is organized first by genre, then by album artist, then by album. There's no way to display all of that in any kind of folder view. It's simply not a reasonable or meaningful depiction of the size of any music library.

This remains the most useful method of showing a library size in the forum:

Don't know the amount of songs, but know that it's about 150 GB.

How can you not know the amount of songs? It's plainly shown at the bottom of the iTunes window.

over 90gigs worth of discographies. Some music in iTunes and some not since I don't want to deal with thousands upon thousands of songs to organize and rate and ****.

I have just over 23,000 in iTunes, with another folder to sort before adding. Should make it to around 24,000. :)

over 22,000

mainly discographies and the like.

I dont generally rate my music, since well if i didnt want in there it would be.
but i can see for stuff youre not familiar with.

and its easy to tag and edit in itunes since alot of it applies automatically.

it takes up quite a bit of space too; since theyre straight from the cd rips in Apple Lossless.

I almost have 10000, it is mainly from many trips to the library and picking up cd's and just burning them to my computer.
