I had around 1500 or more, but I had to cut back to free up some disk space - I think I was up around 6.5 Gb.

In OS9 it worked a treat, only quitting once in a blue moon, and I imagine that was some other program causing the problem.

right now I'm currently at 2538 songs, which resides upon 13.19GB of hard drive...

I am getting very close to investing in a 120GB firewire external...I do a lot of digital photography and need to start keeping less on my TiBook... ;)

99+% of which are songs from cds myself or my wife owns. A lot of what's left are freely downloadable Hour of Slack (http://www.subgenius.com/ts/hos.html) mp3s :D

i recently had ALL my cds stolen, along with a few thousand dollars of stereo equipment from my car.

if it wasn't for mp3's i would have no music anymore...

the majority of my library is actually free bootlegs from phish and bands like them... gigs upon gigs of them. 17.42 gigs total now on my tibook

Pushing 1200.

Close to 5.5 Gigs as most of mine are encoded with a minimum bit-rate of 192 using VBR.

Let me find where the progam is...

I have 3 things in iTunes, seems 2 of different version of the same song - and 1 is a download of a radio call gone wrong.

So I'd don't know whether that would be 1, 2, or 3 songs.

4,000 + or - which equals 17 gb's

all full cd's, unfortunatly I just got quicktime pro, and will now begin encoding in mp4... a bummer the iPod doesn't support it yet.

so its convert, then convert and upload to iPod a lot of work, but the mp4 is much better, and yes, you have already lost all that info going into an mp3, so converting everything to an mp4 is worthless

when I lost $500 in cd's, I now feel ok about getting those cd's back by borrowing them. the one's I really really like, I simply buy again. I fell no guilt. now I'm in the process of backing them up, anyone care to add up how many cd's it will take?

IF the poll time limit was extended another day *hint: arn, extend poll limit another day hint*

I would have voted for 251-500. I actually have 518 songs in iTunes, but many of them are duplicates or variations of the original song, or a slick combination of songs. So that brings the count closer to 450 to 480.

i'm going to get an ipod after mwsf (just in case) and i'm not sure how i'm going handle it all... i've been practising with smart playlists a bit.. that's the key.

in truth, i think i'll get a 5gb (unless some drastic change) even though i like the touch wheel better and 10gb is a bit thinner, the size of the drive doesn't actually matter since 2 x 20gb wouldn't be anough.

i just went over 40gb the other day. norsk is cool!

I think it would be interesting to see a kind of Mac User Group based more around the sharing of music between members. Membership dues and perks would simply be the music you can contribute and would like to take with you. You could show up with a big ol' cd case, digitize your cds, and then take what you want from what was already there! We could sit around watching south park or listening to music while we wait for things to import. It would take a while to get everybody, so everyone would have to wait for their day to "share."

People in this thread boast thousands of songs, but there's really no reason we ALL couldn't have ALL of each others music.

I'm kind of trying to set something like this up. Anyone interested?

1200 songs. Is ripping your own CD's illegal? I could have sworn it was, but I don't care since I Bought Them! :)

No, it's not illegal, as long as you don't distribute them (via internet or CD or ipod) to your friends. You can legally have one copy on your work computer, one on your home computer, one on a burned CD in the car, an original CD in your basement, and one on your walkman tape that you use to go running at the gym.

PS whether or not you sell them or make money makes no matter to the legality of your distribution.

...not really, but I wanted to feel like I was one of the music heavyweights. I actually have 1313 songs, but I rarely listen to all of that.

I'm just waiting for someone to claim "I have 14,000,001 songs!" :D I don't understand why so many consider this a competition. We all have unique tastes in music and unique priorities as to how many songs to have in a collection. What's important is that each person has music that THEY like, no matter how large or small their collection. I have a lot in my collection, but only what appeals to me. I'm sure I have quite a lot that others would have no interest in. You should enjoy your 1313 songs, regardless of how many others may have! :)

14,028 songs.

And the Genius feature of iTunes 8 loves them!

But... Almost all of these are ripped from CDs I've been accumulating over the years. Only 51 were purchased online. And I have to admit that thousands of these songs have been in my library for years and still have a play count of zero. Only about 2,000 of these songs are in "active rotation." So yeah... It's overkill in my case.

i'm going to get an ipod after mwsf (just in case) and i'm not sure how i'm going handle it all... i've been practising with smart playlists a bit.. that's the key.

in truth, i think i'll get a 5gb (unless some drastic change) even though i like the touch wheel better and 10gb is a bit thinner, the size of the drive doesn't actually matter since 2 x 20gb wouldn't be anough.

i just went over 40gb the other day. norsk is cool!

Difference in bit rates or recording formats. If more of your library is at low bit rates, like 128, you can fit more music (more days) into smaller space. Most of my collection is 192 or more, so it takes up almost 146GB for only 73 days. Some may have higher bitrates or lossless that takes up more space per song.

4264 Songs.

I had over 5000 but I just installed a larger hard drive in my macbook and thought it would be a good time to re-rip all my cd's but didn't bother adding a bunch of songs that I borrowed from friends.

I ripped them all at 320kbps mp3 for the best compatibility and sound quality. I don't really care about file size and I would rather have them sound too good for my ears than not good enough.

Song and album are pretty arbitrary terms.

Since most of the music in my iTunes library is "classical" music (mediaeval to contemporary), I don't have too many "songs". Some "albums" have one "song", many only 4 (symphonies), others can have 30 or more "songs".

iTunes tells me I have 3374 "songs" from 272 "albums". That's 64.94GB.
Most are ripped using Apple Lossless, what little "pop" music there is is ripped at AAC 256 variable bit rate.
