Before I switched to my PowerMac I ran a windows laptop. Ive kept it around for a year now and have used it extremely rarely. During its history all it has ever done is piss me off.. anyone ever felt the same about a computer??

Well today out of boredom I decided to put it to its grave for good ... from an upstairs window!! Not just once .. but four times ... i guess it was built quite well after all lol!

I jumped on it a few times and gave it a few kicks too ..... here is the aftermath:

You'd be surprised. I sold an old Compaq Presario 350 mhz laptop for almost $300 on ebay!

Now if only doing that to stubborn Windows users was not illegal in this and most countries... I can only imagine what kind of choas that would cause in areas where there are a lot of MR members. Oh the fun it would be...

(As a side, I do not condone actually throwing Windows users out of second-story, um, windows... This post is in honor of a particular friend of mine :D )

Well at least you followed the "rules" about posting pics :D But if it were me I would have found some better use for it. You said it was acting up on you a lot, but perhaps it could do something. I dunno, just seems like a waste of computer....even it had Windows on it (but that's just me).

Heh, you threw Windows out the window :p

C'mon, regardless of the cash, this is a fantastic thing to do. Why sell it and pass the misery on. This is kind of a no-impact 'pay it forward' type thing...

i would guess that you wouldn't be able to just let it 'fall' though and that you would actually have to throw that to do some damage to it, but its all in good fun too! :D

reminds me of Limp Bizkits song Break Stuff (possibly the only good song that has ever come out of that horrid horrid group)

I agree - I revitalized a 350MHz PII laptop (at least one BSOD per day, back light failing, broken floppy - reinstalling Win95 didn't do any good) by putting Linux on it. It was rock solid afterwards ... showing it wasn't the hardware that was at fault (or it was, but for some reason Windows couldn't handle whatever issues it had but Linux could)

Any old school Mac users remember the MacAddict PC destruction movies? Basically this, only they filmed it and did much worse than a window. They ran them over in cars... took crowbars to 'em... *sigh, nostalgia*

"Hey look, it's a PC!!! AAHHHH!"

Kinda of on the topic of destruction: Anybody ever split a CD in half so you can touch the shiny, reflective stuff of it? Throw it against a concrete wall a couple times. Get a whole bunch of Windows install CDs from eBay and you have entertainment for the whole day! :D :D

the thing went up in smoke... literally.

it overheated and smoke came out of the vents. Everything was fried.....

it was my friends, who got it for free, and i think the pervious owner tampered with it....

those fumes in there make you dizzy...

For some reason, I think it would be fun to self-pitch an iPod and crank it with a baseball bat. Heck, just paint some red seams on it!

PIIIs did... maybe he is talking about one of those? PIIIs are great computers, far better than the P4 clock for clock. PMs are based off of the PIII core.

This is a great thread. Back in college I used a 2.5gig Quantum Bigfoot harddrive in my linux router box. Simply because I got it free, and I didn't have money to burn. Anyone who worked in PC repair in the last 5 years has probably seen these. They're terrible. HP and Compaq both used them.

Anyway, when I replace the drive finally, I defenestrated it like nobody's business. It took remarkable pain from the second story onto concrete. So my friend and I dropped a huge brick on it over and over (from the balcony) until it was in chunks. That was so fun.

Keep it up!

Try cooking a CD in a microwave for 2 or 3 seconds, it awesome, crackles up like a spiderweb.

Never done that. I did try once to se if a CD whould catch on fire, using a lighter... well, it didn't, but it did melt in an interesting way.

Put the axe to a modem once. Hacked it into little pieces and buried it. It had caused me nothing but grief. Grrr... I want to smash something just thinking about that hellish thing

As for the original post: Although it was painful for a moment to see the pictures, I can understand it. No need to pass on all the grief to someone else. That'd just be cruel. :p

What a complete and utter waste.

There are companies set up which you can donate you computer to, which will clean and restore computers and send them to Africa.

Or better yet, someone you know who could have really done with a computer but never had the money to buy one.

I wouldn't call it a fantastic thing to do. As said the laptop could have been used for something. Now it's just a pile of metal that is pretty much useless now. I don't know much about it, but I'm sure he could have put Linux on it or something. Or at the very least, he could have used it for spare parts instead of just destroying it. I think it's nice to have a computer to fiddle around with. Remember, one man's garbage is another man's treasure (course that would fit better when the laptop was still somewhat useful).

That's just my opinion on it. Don't want to get that deep into it ;)

This is true, but if the computer was finky... you don't want to give it to someone in a 3rd-World country. Would just be worse for them since they can't fix it.

I'm not saying people aren't allowed to have fun. And I won't donate my computer as I take care of it and use it everyday.

What I'm saying is, that you have a machine which could have went to much better use than a pile of circuits on the ground so you get some perverse, destructive pleasure out of it.

You clearly have never felt the perverse, destructive pleasure that comes from throwing a piece of technology that has pissed you off to no end for years off a roof and watching it smashing on the pavement below. Oh baby, I loves it.
