View Full Version : Once again I am having ibook trouble
Aug 21, 2005, 03:01 PM
My computer once again is freezing at start up. Though this time it freezes on the screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. But the apple logo gets replaced by a circle with a slash in it sign, similar to the do not enter sign. Any help would be appreciated. Btw my ibook is only 2months old and I am having all these problems with it.

I ran the disk utility to attempt to repair my HD. The first error that came up was "keys out of order", then the computer states it is "rebuilding catalog b-tree." That task never finishes and I get two more statements one being, "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired" and the other is "Error: The underlyiing task reported failure on exit"

Back up what you can and do an clean install of Tiger (or Panther). By clean I mean erase and install.
There are too many variables so the best way to get rid of the headache once and for all is to start with a fresh system. Sorry.
My opinion of course.

I agree with the posters above. It sounds like you have a corrupt installation of OS X. I would back up your stuff if all possible and do an erase and install. In this case DO NOT do an Archive and Install. This will more than likely not solve your problems. Its better to just do an erase and install and that will totally eliminate your OS X folder and anything else that could be causing your problems.
I have setup brand new Macs with bad installations of OS X right out of the box. It has happened before.

Since it's only 2 months old you could call 1-800-My-Apple. Chances are they will have you reinstall the OS. That is unless they would find a hardware problem.
