iMessage on iPhone and iPad issue

I heard that you can have iMessage work on your iPhone and iPad and the messages will show up on both with iOS 6. I have both setup to show both my apple id and phone number, however when I get a new iMessage it only shows up on my Phone and does not show up on my iPad. Is there something I am missing on my setup?
