The library directory is hidden by default in Mountain Lion. I know there is a way to unhide it, but I am trying to restore a file that was hidden at the time Time machine backed it up. Is there a way to get it off my time machine disk assuming that was even backed up to begin with since it was hidden?

TM backs up all files and folders, including hidden files/folders, unless excluded specifically.

You are mistaken. Time Machine excludes quite a few files/folders from backup.

OP> To see a list of what files are excluded from Time Machine by default run the below command in Terminal app. You will be prompted for your password. Most of the excludes are cache files that do not need to be backed up.

sudo mdfind "com_apple_backup_excludeItem = 'com.apple.backupd'"

Thanks for the correction. But a TM backup should probably include the user's Library folder, shan't it?

Probably why I do not use TM anyway.

It certainly would include it by default... yes.
