Arrrgh!! I've just ordered a 24" Dell display and now I'm wondering whether I should have gone with the Apple 20 inch. Oh decisions, decisions. :-s

Well I've just placed an order and it appears to have gone through.

I've not had an email to confirm yet but the display is showing as "in-stock" so fingers crossed.

As soon as I get confirmation I have to cancel the Dell order. :-s

They'll honour it - the .97 ending means they've shifted it over to clearance stock to get rid of it. Worth a go if you're looking for one.

I'd have thought if it was a mistake, they'd have taken it off by now. Mistakes don't usually last an hour the next morning... and you'd think they'd have sales monitoring software to spot anomalies like lots of sudden orders on a product.

The bad news is that even if you get an order confirmation email, it's probably carefully worded to say that they've got your order but not yet accepted your offer to purchase so that they can cancel it if necessary. Not until you get that 'payment taken/shipped' email can you relax.

Good luck to all who have ordered!

Big, big thanks fellas; I've just ordered one!! Gaining me a grand saving of £132.28 as I would have bought one from the Education store at £505.25.

For those of you out there not wishing to risk the Education route [I am a legit student by the way] the savings to be had through purchasing from Dixons is as nice £176.03!!

Big thanks once again... now I need to come up with a suitable excuse for the Mrs. as to why yet another huge box has been delivered by the courier!!

On a side question, for the moment I'd like to run this fella from my Windows box [awaiting the 'possible' mini announcements at Paris before purchasing Mac desktop replacement] -- could anybody recommend a "cheap" AGP card that would power it? I don't know one ATI from the other as I've always been a Matrox boy...

One thing that makes me wonder about this offer is that the Apple display doesn't seem to show up when browsing the Apple area or the monitor area.

The only way I've spotted the display is by doing a keyword search so maybe they've just not sold any for a long time? Possible I suppose.

However, Dixons rarely "give" things away in my experience. They did have an excellent deal on the G5 Dual 2.5 awhile ago though. Think it was £999 but was out of stock. :-(

Dammit i missed out on that one as i hesitated before clicking the add to basket button. :( :( :(

Do i really need one?...... no

Do i want one though?...... yes, especially at that price!

oh b*gger. actually i'd really love the 23 inch model as in the apple store recently i thought the 20 inch looked a bit small - but that one costs as much as my powerbook did, which is a little extortionate for just a display i think.

Hmm... it's out of stock now. Interesting. :-s

Hope I get a dispatch email before I go bananas.

I wanted the 23 inch too and considered buying it but the Dell was too much cheaper to justify it. Even if I did want something that matches the powerbook and powermac.

However, I honestly can't see me *needing* a 24 inch screen. I sit right next to the monitor and the extra width of a 20 inch should be fine... I hope!

I called several Dixons stores in London earlier this morning and most of them said that they never carried the Apple displays in-store anyway, you'd have to get it online or at PC World (part of the same group). They also said it is a discontinued line hence the price, and checked the warehouse and said it's totally out of stock. I called PC World in Fulham and they have 6 available but they are the usual price. Currys online has a couple of quid off the usual price but is also saying out of stock - they are part of the Dixons group too.

Oh well, i tried. Congratulations to all those who managed to get one. If anyone has bought one just because of the deal and doesn't really need it then please PM me ;)

Because it is clearance stock. I rang around earlier and apparently they are discontinuing this line - not at Apple obviously - but the Dixons group are no longer selling it. not quite 1/2 price but about £150 off (£175 off with that voucher code)

am still so gutted i missed out :(

Right then... I'm coming up to Birmingham to look for big Apple boxes on doorsteps :D

I am not a big fan of Dixons either, but actually they do occasionally have very good clearance deals. A couple of months ago I received a PM from someone here telling me that they'd seen one of the central London stores selling last year's PowerBook for just under £800 - not a bad price! Was too late though as I'd just gone and bought a new PB that weekend anyway, plus I wanted the latest model.

Woohoo! Go Dell.

Okay so I called Dixons and they confirmed that stock had been allocated for my order of the Apple display.

So, I called Dell to cancel my 24 inch monitor and all seemed fine. THEN I receive an email from Dell to say it was shipped and being delivered tomorrow.

So I emailed Dell last night to complain and this morning received a reply that says (bad English is theirs not mine!):

As per your request we can surely cancell the order, But as every order is uniquely built for our customer's.

If you are willing to accept the order we can re-fund : 120 pounds as goodwill gesture, Please mail me back to confirm what need's to be from our end.

What a bl**dy joke! I've replied to point out that they have not custom built a monitor for me and that their terms and conditions say I get a full refund if I'm not happy!

Nice trick it is too. I'd like to hear how they custom built my monitor. Maybe it says "Steve" rather than Dell on the front now?

I'm hoping I can't be held to this as their terms and conditions state:

Consumer Rights
If you are a Consumer you may cancel your purchase at any time within 7 working days of receipt without cause and receive a refund of the Price paid. To do this you must inform Dell in writing and return the products immediately, in the same condition you received them and at your own cost and risk. Any statutory Consumer rights are unaffected by this Agreement. This does not apply to any business customer or user.

If I don't even accept the goods, what can they do?

It's a custom BOX because they've stuck your name and address on it
;)

I am sure you are well within your rights to refuse delivery or send the goods back unopened for a full refund.

Well the good news for me is that i *might* be getting one of the Dixons deals too. I still had that site open in Firefox (doesn't seem to behave v well in safari) yesterday evening and happened to refresh the page and it said it was in stock again! They must have said it was temporarily out of stock because of a sudden demand by MR members! Anyway i ordered one but the first email took hours to arrive and i have literally only just received the second email that says they are starting to process my order. Website says out of stock again so i really hope i've got one allocated...

My first email took hours too and I've just received the third one.

Last night I called the number in one of the emails (don't have it to hand) to ask if stock had been allocated to my order so you could always try that to put yourself out of your misery.

I still won't believe it totally until it arrives (with no dead pixels!) :-s

I just called the number in the email... he said the order looked fine but he wasn't able to confirm 100% that one was allocated to me yet as still too early. He said they 'should' have one for me (hopefully) and basically told me to wait for the next email or to call back later in the week if i haven't heard anything.

hmmm yes i'm worried about dead pixels too but i suppose i'll have to overlook the odd one for £150ish off - i used that £25 voucher code but then the delivery charge was almost as much as i requested the wednesday morning slot.

 Just out of interest, how much did he pay?

I saw a couple of discounted 23" models (refurbs/opened boxes) at Regent Street a few weeks ago for around £849 or £899 but i'm guessing those may have been returns due to dead pixels or something, and for that price i'd want a perfect one.

probably more to do with the pink tinge some of them seem to have, i'll have a look and see if i can have any guarantees of dead pixels. £850 with a 10% off card that i have would be £765 which is about how much the dell 24" screen costs.

I doubt they'd integrate a TV Tuner, I mean, they'd have to have a different model for each territory and standard, and not much use for the myriad companies that provide their own decoder box.

I expect that it will add a HDMI or DisplayPort input however, hopefully even component input. Computer -> DVI, Cable/Satellite/Terrestrial digital receiver -> HDMI/Component.

Their 'REPAIR' services aint Maintenance things are a joke... I sent a HP notebook of my sisters in to see just what they do... they just virus check & run adaware ... duh!

Oh and I have heard many a time they recommend to customers not to bother with mac's and / or decent brands and to try their latest Packard Hell or Advent ... yuk! NEC Rebranded rubbish.

They don't give you any drivers / cd's apart from on a partition on the hdd so when the hdd dies and you replace it you have to shell out £35 for the cd's to be sent.....

Dixons!! The lousy rotten ########!!!!

It's been a week since I placed the order [24th August @ 10am to be precise]; still no 2nd e-mail so I decided to check the progress on-line over at dixons.co.uk.

They've cancelled the order!!!! I don't know why, the cc on which the purchase was made has tons of room left on it so I know that isn't the problem!!

Now I've gotta wait until 9pm before the call centre opens... oh what fun to be had on a Thursday morning, I really can't wait!!!

Out of interest, those lucky sods who have taken delivery, on what date and approx. time did you place your order?

Bakey

Update!!

My order was placed at 10:01am 24th August, and was cancelled at 11:45am on the same day as there was no stock! Apparently an e-mail was sent to me to explain the situation but, as it's Dixons, it never arrived.... just like the 20incher never will!!

And yes, Dixons are discontinuing the model, ie. they're no longer going to be carrying which doesn't automatically mean Apple is discontinuing it [obviously]. So with this fact I ain't going to be getting that much needed discounted 20" Cinema Display to go with my soon to be purchased Mac mini.

B#######!!! Is all I can say... Dixons can go shove every Windows & MS product up their fat greedy backsides. Use and abuse, as I would never have purchased anything from Dixons in the first place; only occasionally do I purchase printer consumables from PC World [Dixons Group] as they pretty much alway carry the stock.

Right rant over!!!!

That is not good news :(

Dixons are messing me around too and I can't seem to get a straight answer out of them.

I requested one of the premium delivery options for £18.99 so it would be delivered Wed (i.e. yesterday) between 8am and 10:30am. Called on Tuesday morning to confirm and they said yes no problem it would be there. Then later that afternoon I got an email saying there was a delay and it would arrive any time in the next 5 working days but they would refund the delivery charge.

so of course nothing arrived yesterday :( and when i called about it they said it was because premium delivery or whatever they call it was unavailable for that date so now i'm just getting the bog-standard (not through any choice of mine) delivery service where they will send one if and when they feel like it and if there is any stock left....which by now and by the sounds of it there probably isn't.

so who knows if i will receive one or not. i cannot get a proper response from them. not a happy bunny. grrrrrrrrrr.

I may now pop in to my local Dixons from time to time to see if there's anything else in the bargain bin; fortunately the closest one is literally a few hundred yards from work.

for what it's worth, I ordered mine at 9:53 on the 24th... according to the Dixon's email anyway.

Mine arrived on Friday morning.

I argued with the chap on the phone stating I'd ordered it pretty early on and yet others have already received there's [I've no idea if this is true by the way!!] -- but he explained that it's who evers is processed by the credit/debit reference agency first that counts, not the actual time at which the individual placed the order at dixons.co.uk. So, I could've ordered it a 8am and still be in the same situation if Experian didn't authorise the payment in time! Which clearly they didn't!!!!!!!!!!!!

so who knows if i will receive one or not. i cannot get a proper response from them. not a happy bunny. grrrrrrrrrr.

But your situation sounds somewhat more intriguing as you've at least received the three golden emails and confirmation of a delivery date [even though they're messing you around with that!]

I wonder where you stand as I'm assuming the cash has left your account without taking delivery of the goods! Do they have to honour the order or will they simply refund you dosh and call the deal off?

I feel your frustration!!! Good luck... ;)

STILL no sign of my ACD :( :( :(

Am soooo annoyed with Dixons right now. They have charged £391.96 to my credit card (almost 2 weeks ago now) which is the cost of the display minus the £25 voucher discount, plus £18.99 shipping, which they still haven't refunded.

I had to call them again this morning as I still haven't heard anything back from them since my phone calls last week following their "we're delaying your shipping for no apparent reason" email. As usual, person at the other end was clueless and all she said was that she would get someone from head office to call me back within the next 24 to 48 hours...
