I'm a recent Mac convert and I find time machine incredibly convenient. I used SOS online to backup my old PC. Is it possible to use iCloud in a similar way and have my time machine backup go ahead and back itself up on iCloud?

No... iCloud is not designed to be a backup for your entire computer like that. You might want to look at Crashplan or similar online backup services.

iCloud will store your calendar and contacts, well as iWorks documents if you have it configured properly... but that is about it.

and seeing as how Apple charges $100/50GB of iCloud storage it would get expensive with large backups.

I mean it is possible to make a TM backup and then back that up to iCloud manually but it doesn't seem very cost effective considering other alternatives.

Ex: Having carbonite backup your TM.
