0.25^x = 0.05

i can't for the life of me remember how to do this...can someone enlighten me?

oh yes....solve for x :p

You mean, aside from using a calculator program to type in

.25 [x^y] <insert number here> <ENTER>

and figuring out that x = 2.16 something?

take logs of both sides:

x ln(0.25) = ln(0.05)

thus x = ln(0.05) / ln(0.25) = 2.16.....

thus x = ln(0.05) / ln(0.25) = 2.16.....Yup, swiftaw's right. This works exactly. (Sobs silently as realization kicks in that much of my high school math classes have been forgotten...)

Seriosuly, I'm in going into 9th grade and I knew how to do that and I'm not like a genious (although I do get As in math).

I AM SO GLAD I AM GOING TO ART SCHOOL!

Ok so I am working on a joke and I am totally not a joke maker, so come up with your best punch line for this.

Q: How many creatives does it take to do math?

A: It really doesn't matter... they all come up with different answers no matter how many you have.

Learn the laws of logs and you might not find this as difficult.

interesting that even though we're all such 'computer nerds' when it comes to math, we still have such different educational backgrounds and interests :D

Disappointment.

Think of "maths" as the British equivalent of our American word mathematics. He didn't use bad grammer, he just lives in a different country. Ease up. :)

Logs - that's what you get when you cut down trees. Right?

Isn't mathematics Latin?
While there may laws of logs (I've already admitted to not being science of math’ss minded) there are no laws to grammer. Don't think of grammar as laws or rules, just suggestions or guidelines. :)

Only type of 'log' I know is the log generated by various computer programs.

Keep in mind that in the USA, we often refer to the basics of education as the 3 "Rs"

Reading
(w)Riting
a(R)ithmetic

Go figure

Assuming you meant your above comment seriously, I am sure you know that it really has nothing to do with being poor at mathematics and everything to do with the simple use of the skill. Mathematics, like many areas of logic (especially those that are more esoteric in nature), do tend to remain with one only if they use the skill from time to time. As such the mathematical problem being presented was not noted as being "hard", just forgotten in its procedure.

For myself, as a scientist I am very aware that the concepts I use regularly are "basic" to me which is why, for example, I can rattle off more than just general parts to such processes as ribosomal protein synthesis or igneous/metamorphic/magmatic interactions (commonly known as the rock cycle) without much thought. Yet if someone has not seen these topics in a while they most likely have forgotten them. This is why I do not think any less of the geneticist that asked a "simple" math question, and I am sure you did not think any less of them either (nor am I am implying that you did). Just keep in mind that we all have our foci, and tend to be good at only them.

More importantly, when does that new powermac come out?! :D

Thanks Santeh...you're absolutely right...just the procedure had been forgotten even though it was high school level.
