View Full Version : Mighty Mouse - Scrolling Problem
OCOTILLO

I recently developed a scrolling problem with my Mighty Mouse. It started to only vertical scroll in one direction. I reinstalled the software and it did not help. So, I called Apple tech support. While waiting on the line, I decided to press quite hard on the scroll button and try to scroll. That cured the problem, after that it only required the normal light touch to work properly. I do not know what was the cause of the problem, maybe dust(?), in any event it is working fine now.

I read on another thread (can remember exact one) that someone was asking how to clean the ball, with no answer. I wonder if that is part of your problem. Finger oils and dust can play hell on some things.

i JUST had this problem yesterday. i was about to take it to the apple store but then i decided to just push on it really hard. yep it fixed it for me too(i couldnt scroll upwards). but then a few hours later i couldnt scroll down, so i tried again. at first the pushing hard didnt work but eventually it did. it felt like something was stuck inside there, a woodchip i think, and pushing it hard simply pushes it out.

I had exactly the same problem and your solution works. So thanks for the post, it saved me a lot time and effort. Nothing wrong with posting a question and a solution, after all the whole point of these forums is to help other people which is exactly what you did!

I haven't had that problem but something even more annoying started happening over the weekend.
Firstly - it would suddenly initiate both expose and dashboard - often simultaneously but sometimes just one or the other. There is no way that I either squeezed or pressed the scroll button when this happened so it wasn't just an accident, and has happened far too many times now to be a one off.
Secondly - the cursor would jump to the other side of the screen for no reason - usually jumping to the left.
Finally (and I doubt this is a problem with the mouse, but with everything else playing up who knows?) working in cubase vertical scrolling works fine but all horizontal scrolling is inverted. It's like steering a boat with an outboard, but less intuitive. There are no options within Cubase to alter this either. that I can see.
Anyone had the same problems or do I have to take this thing back to the store?
Thanks
Zim

I have occasionally had the jumping cursor problem. I have no idea why it happens. So far it has not occurred often enough to get on my nerves. It has to be a mouse (or mouse firmware problem) since my one button BT mouse never did it.

Anyone want to trade their Mighty Mouse for an Apple BT Mouse? Paid $60 for it, just like brand new, works perfectly, no cosmetic faults whatsoever.. PM me!

I have observed the jumping cursor problem a few times when using a "smooth" mouse mat. When using the less smooth type, it works without any problems at all.

Thank you for the idea! Even though it didn't work for me but it gave me another idea. I used "Dust-Off" -- compressed gas duster to blow into the gap between the ball and the edge of the hole and it worked!

I just had the same problem and googled it:: I should have expected the MacRumors forums to be one of the first hits  I tired the pressing hard thing and it didn't work...
I took a more physical approach to the problem and took a thin paper clip to the ball of the mouse....
I would not recommend it because obviously there's something senstive under there but it worked for me! :p

Thanks again Ocotillo. Is Hawaii the correct guess?

The scroll mechanism suffers from the ingress of debris, which cannot be removed without disassemblying the mouse - a rather tricky problem as it is sealed top to bottom. If you wish to have your mouse made good as new again, you can visit http://apple.nuget.net for more information.

20 euros to have my mouse ball cleaned?! Thanks but no thanks!!! My ball was very very dirty. I tried cleaning it the way shown by Apple Support with no success for a while. Basically if doesn't work you just have to rub that ball harder and for a longer time. A good idea is to clean it whilst connected and with a scrollable page open. Once the vertical scrolling starts coming back keep going for a while. My mouse was warm verging on hot when i finished cleaning it! 20 euros to rub a mouse ball with a cloth, you must be kidding!:p

Disconnect the mouse, then use dry unwaxed paper to push the ball in and roll it in all directions. Kitchen roll is perfect for the job. You'll see blobs of grease start to break off. Wipe these away with the paper to make sure they don't go back down the hole. Do this in all directions for a few minutes until the mouse ball feels rough (You should then remember this is how it felt in the beginning before you got your greasy mitts on it :) ). Repeat if necessary. Now when you move the mouse ball normally, you should hear the clicking noise to show it's working correctly with the rollers. Plug it back in and the scroll action should work again.
Remember, dry unwaxed paper. Don't use a moist cloth as Apple suggests.

Sorry to disappoint you blowers and suckers - the problem is an internal one and no long term solution can be obtained except by open-mouse surgery. I have suggested to Apple that they ought to make the mouse openable for routine cleaning and, perhaps, they might do that - it would only need a snap-on ring to hold the parts together. It is a mighty mouse which can suffer from 'appendicitis' affecting, not just the ball, but the cogwheels running on it.

yep, only way to really fix it, the main problem with that though is that the magnetic rollers are insanly small, and i lost one of them, rendering my scroll wheel useless. i made a thread about said lost roller a few days ago, i just went out and bought a new one after i couldnt find the roller. those things do get really dirty though, and there kind of hard to reseat once you take them out of there place's, if apple would have to redesign the mouse to make it actually service able to the "average" user.
edit: heres the guide i followed the first time i took the thing apart, you can see the rollers and how dirty they get.

I have the wireless one, and after 3 weeks i couldn't scroll up and down..
I reported it to Apple who sent out of a replacement, but in the meantime I tried what one of the forum members said, which was to press hard on the scroll wheel and force it forward/backward.. and by magic.. it all worked again!!
Still, Apple had already sent me the new replacement MM, so I just used that and sent the faulty one that I got to work again, back :)

SIX DAYS on my replacement mighty mouse, and I couldn't scroll up. I thought the bluetooth model would fix this, but apparently it hasn't. I rubbed it furiously, and it temporarily fixed it, but I'm sure I'll have the problem again.
This product's scroll ball makes it absolutely rubbish, I'm sorry. Didn't they do any testing on it? I'm an obsessed clean freak, and my fingers are never greasy, or really naturally oily for that matter. This shouldn't be happening.

It's time people stopped scratching their balls and started to penetrate directly by writing to Apple at 1 Infinitity Way, Cupertino or email Steve. This is a ball-breaking issue in which one little smutty ball should not become a source of annoyance and a reason to give up on this uniquely agile mouse and return to the Microsoft monster.
It is simply that the ball must be held under a retractable disk of about 16mm diameter similar to those used to hold in the balls of pre-optic mice so that it can be serviced regularly.
Would you buy a car that hadn't got a window washer - not unless you wanted to keep it in a sterile garage or, perhaps, from a used car salesman, similarly Apple must be let know that our mice live in the real filthy world and should be designed to take fair wear and tear.

Same for me here. Just press down the knob a few times and it normally works again. Though I hate it - just awful quality.

Oh dear! Some people really do like making a mountain out of a molehill!!
The ball will, over time, obviously pick up dirt and grease from your fingers. The easy way ( advocated by Apple ) to clean it is to lay a lint-free cloth (which has been dampened with a little water) on the work surface, turn the mouse over and whilst pressing down, roll the mouse fairly vigorously over the damp surface. Leave the mouse for a while to dry out and it should be as good as new. I personally prefer to sparingly use Isopropyl Alcohol (used for cleanib recording heads etc).
Hope this helps.

I've had the same problem, several times in fact. The scroll goes out every couple of days.
I thinking of just buying a completely different mouse brand because I'm hearing more and more about all the problems the (not so) Mighty Mouse gives users.

I just tried this too. It worked.
I'd tried the method where you push the ball in. I was only able to regain the upward scrolling. I pushed and PUSHED but could not get the downward scroll.
The instructions above take about 20 minutes to implement. I used Krazy Glue to put it back together.

I'm sorry if I'm repeating what someone else said (didn't bother reading previous posts) but here is what works for me 100%.
I have these small Alcohol Swabs I bought at the Pharmacy and when the scroll don't work I:
- take a swab
- make it a little dryer by tapping it on paper (but keep the swab a little moist)
- roll it over the scroll wheel in every direction.
This works everytime and on more than one mouse. Try it out.

Although it's probably quite valid to point out that the MM scrolling problem can occur with the buildup of dirt over time, that doesn't explain why I first experienced it within hours of setting up my brand new iMac.
Although the "push hard" option does seem to work, I also find that restarting the computer can also fix the problem. That must mean there's more than a dirt issue here, surely? My friend who got his iMac on the same day in another part of the country experienced the exact same thing with his Mighty Mouse within hours of his setting up his computer. So something isn't right...
Cheers

Like the old mice balls of yester-year they will get dirty and need to be cleaned. Apple has been kind enough to post a support page on this issue.

How long did all yours take to start malfuctioning. I have had mine for 2 months and not a single complaint... well right clicking only works about 60 percent of the time, but I've gotten so used to it I don't even noticed my constant right clicking to hopefully get a response...

Read the entire thread and was skeptical about Apple's suggested cleaning method (I'm sure I was way past the "pressing down really hard on the ball..." method :-))...I was eager and ready to jump directly into the "let's take the MM apart method" (which BTW is a great tutorial in itself as to how to take the mouse apart for any other reason you might have).
Decided to give Apple's method a try and surprisingly it worked! Now, don't expect the dirt to dislodge after a few rubs, I had to continously rub for about 3 minutes for it to start responding then a couple more minutes did the job.
Still, I think Apple should work on a redesign of the trackball (being that a lot of analogies have been used in this thread, mine would go like this: it's like purchasing a top of the line automobile and having to step out of the car every so often to get the windshield wipers dislodge so they can keep working)...otherwise a great mouse -productivity wise-.

I'll like to add to my previous post that, in my personal opinion and experience, the procedure indicated by Apple to clean the mouse should be a scheduled maintenance rather than a proceedure employed only once the scroll ball stops working.
At the office I'm having all five mouses "cleaned" once every week now and so far they perform flawlessly...

I too had a similar problem. Suddenly my mouse would only scroll vertically and in an upward direction. Pressing firmly on the ball while scrolling resolved the problem. However, it was necessary for me to change the function of the scroll ball from "dashboard" to "button 3". Once I temporarly made the change and pressed firmly on the scroll ball all was back in working order. Thanks for figuring it out.

It happened to my MM BT after about 3 months. I went to the Apple shop where I bought it (Eplehuset Oslo) and they replaced it no questions asked. I had my new one 4 weeks and it has happened to this one as well. Can´t scroll up.
I tried to push hard on the ball, but no success.
Guess I should give Apple´s method a try. Surprised they gave me a replacement instead of cleaning it though

I used to have the same scrolling problem (only scrolling up worked) but during the move to a new place I guess any debris got knocked out. I still have the same problem, but it's not a hardware issue. I can only scroll up w/ the MM on certain ads on treehugger.com that have embedded video. As I scroll down the page, it stops at that ad, and I have to move the pointer elswhere before it will continue to scroll down. What's up (no pun intended) with that?

Hello folks!
I did this:
1- I pour 3 drops of WD-40 in the gap of the little track ball and turn the mighty mouse upside down for avoiding contact of the liquid with the inner electronics.
2- I rubbed it very hard with a clean cloth and all the grease and dirt disolved by the WD-40 began to emerge.
3- Applied pressurized air to the gap... and that's it!
The dashboard or the function you have by pressing the little ball won't work for 2 or 3 days while the WD-40 dries. After that you will have a fully functional MM without surgery.
Hope this can help!!!! :)

Everyone who has a Mighty Mouse has this problem it's a design flaw, go to the Razer Store (http://www.razerzone.com/) and buy a good mouse not the rubbish Apple is pushing onto consumers.....
I think Apple products are great however the Mighty Mouse is complete junk I have gone through 4 of the dam things (to Apple's credit they did replace them for me) ALL of them with the same problem from only a few weeks use.
The scroll on the Mighty Mouse is flaw I really do hope Apple address this issue next Mouse update :apple:

I am a realitive newbie to Mac's
But even on a PC scroll mouse where you have to tickle the mouse's ball's the same problem occur's.
It's a moving part which accumulates skin particles, dust and dirt.
Yes, we are all dirty, no matter how strict your cleanliness regime.
The solution is so simple from my experience, unplug the mouse, thouroughly clean the ball vigorously in every direction with a baby wipe, then dry it using an absorbent soft paper kitchen towel.
Leave it for five minutes to dry out and hey presto!!! it works like it should in every direction.
The problem is a recuring one, but short of taking the thing to bits to clear out dead skin, a regular cleaning program seems the best solution.
YOUR WORK IS AS GOOD AS YOUR TOOLS, KEEPING YOUR TOOLS CLEAN AND IN GOOD ORDER WILL PAY DIVIDENDS.:)

Just had a thought on some of the other entries on this page where people have had problems scrolliing within the first day or so.
Perhaps some of the mice returned to apple have'nt had their ball's cleaned and are simply re-packaged and shipped onto the next unsuspecting consumer.
I dont think there is a software problem and if it worked after re-booting it is simply a fluke.
If mine stops working while I am working, I simply un-plug it, go off and clean it as mentioned befor with a baby wipe and paper towel and a few minutes later, plug it back in and it works without re-booting.:)

Really disappointed to report the first real problem with my shiny new iMac.
after just over two weeks ecstatic ownership, I get a problem with this MM, which I have previously loved, which is a jump back to 1995 with the first ball-equipped mouse I ever used. Damn. Whilst the solution of kitchen roll rolling worked, I am royally p*ssed at apple for making this mouse un-serviceable. Big mistake.
Warranty applecare style complaints are about to commence, and I'm gonna insist they gimme a razor 1.6 or something to placate me.

I had the exact same scrolling problem with my Mighty Mouse (it could only scroll vertically and upwards), and I was able to fix this problem by pressing hard on the scroll button and trying to scroll at the same time. I had to repeat this 2-3 times but it eventually fixed the problem.

I've had this problem many times with my bluetooth MM.
I just grab a wet cloth, or any cloth and turn the mouse upside down and roll the scrolling ball up and down, making sure the ball is being cleaned by the rag.
That usually solved the issue.

Apple should, IMO, redesign this mouse with a miniature track pad in place of that ball.

My mighty mouse would not scroll down. I pressed the button down hard, and used a can of compressed air to blow into the gap between the ball and the body of the mouse. Problem solved.
But, there is now a piece of dust floating around the inside of the mouse with nowhere to go...It's bound to repeat.

What I finally did, and it seems to have worked very well, is to wet my finger and roll around on the ball. Then get a small pin and dig around the hole which should clean it up a bit. Then roll the ball around again and problem fixed. :D

I bought my first Mighty Mouse together with a 12-inch PowerBook G4 around 2 years ago. This one had the scrolling problem after 4 months and was replaced by my Apple reseller in October 2006. When you ask for a replacement, they look at the warranty of your computer. My PowerBook was still in warranty, so I got a brand new Mighty Mouse. But also the new one had the scrolling problem once in a while and last month I decided to buy myself a decent Logitech MX620 because I was tired of it (and its ergonomy isn't that great either).
I think Apple has to come up with a redesign, because the scroll ball is too fragile...

I'm having that problem right now with my BT MM except that it won't scroll down at all and only up. The firm press didn't work for me, so I don't know what to do really...it's only 2 weeks old:(
So you've tried all the options in this thread such as wetting it and rubbing it? And digging around the hole with a pin?

I found quite a good way to "clean" my scrollball on my mighty mouse:
Get a sheet of paper (ideally clean - inkjet paper seems to work quite well!). Turn the mouse upside down. Push down quite firmly and run the scrollball VERY vigourously over the paper in all directions. You should be able to see the results as a load of streaks on the paper!
It might be best to turn the mouse off first, as it can make your pages scroll very quickly ;)

I would NOT suggest doing this. I followed these instructions, and I was amazed by how much stuff was on the paper. Unfortunately, the vigorous rubbing made some of the plastic on the mouse melt and go into the trackball's hole, where it then hardened. This means that my mouse will no longer physically scroll upwards, nor does expose work.

It's a Apple mouse, great design, but you need to take care of it.
Most people older than 12 ;) that used the non-optical mouses know they get dirty on the bottom.
The glidepads get some black goo stuck to them and the ball skips.
Just remove the disc holding the ball, clean the ball and use a tweezer to remove the dirt and cat hair/lint/tiny strings from sweaters from the rolls.
The Mighty Mouse doesn't have the disc on top to hold the ball, that would ruin the design, so you need to find another solution.
Like Halcyon said before, use scheduled maintenance, don't call it a flaw.
Or do you complain to your parents that you're teeth are a flaw, you need to clean them everynight ?
If you don't want or can't take care of a great mouse, buy a Logitech.
But then you can only use it with your right hand ...

I always have the scrolling problem on my 1 yr old bluetooth MM. Vigourous rubbing on a rag eventually solves the problem, though it is becoming more and more of a problem and more and more difficult to solve. Definitely a design problem as it is obvious the scroll ball will get clogged up so it should be made easy to clean.
Another problem I have is that the right click stops responding so the MM acts like the traditional one button mouse. Only way to solve this is switch it off and on again and reconnect. Has already happened several times today and is happening now again!

I tried cleaning mine, but that did not fix it.
I got a new one and am glad that I did.
My old wireless MM had a lot of slack in it that bother me. This new mouse is tight, feels good, and the click sound itself sounds better and is not as annoying.
ANyone noticed the click sound made by the wired mouse? It is terribly annoying to hear.

I guess it only makes sense that I would need to clean the ball but that doesnt make it frustrating. I have had this problem before and so I Googled it and of course like another member said, I should have known that I'd get the answer here. I tried the pushing hard trick and it worked. I then took a diaper wipe and ran it around the ball. I was surprised how much junk came out. I still might take it back to Apple because I am just under the one-year warranty and if they will replace it, why not let them. ANOTHER problem I've had and I've seen a few other people talk about it (maybe Im not on the right thread) but my right click button has NEVER worked properly. If I right click it might work one time in fifty. Does anyone have a "MM" where the right click has always worked for them?
NEW POST: I just answered my own question. Maybe this will help others with the right click problem. So far its worked every time. http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006122109112943

Um, wash your hands and don't use the mousing hand to eat or do other activities that will dirty the mouse.

Incredible! SHe said it would take 5 to 7 business days and it came today! Less than 24 hours!!! Excellent service, Apple.
I urge anyone who bought the mouse within the past year (before their warranty is up) to call Apple and get it changed. Do this only if you've been having to clean it multiple times, and not just once every few months. Even after cleaning, mine would just stop working a few minutes after. I don't have a problem with cleaning it once in a while but it was getting to a point where you really couldn't scroll at all.

This is what I had to resort to, although I didn't think to try using water; instead I went straight for the alcohol. Worked like a charm.:D

I recently developed a mouse.

I recently did the repair as on this website that was previously linked:
http://web.mac.com/karelgil/iWeb/MacWebSite/MightyMEng.html
After feeling that I would NEVER get the inner ring back on at the end, I was wondering if it is even necessary to take the inner ring off to do this. It seems like the outer ring can be removed and the lid then removed without removing the inner ring.
Anyone else try this?

I know it's gross, but the oils in your skin and sweat over time gunks up the works on your scroll ball. I had to break the seal on my MM to get it open and clean out the gunk and dusties. The mouse was never the same after the seal was broken because it's actually glued together at the fatory. I had to crazy glue it back together. My 3 year old dropped the mouse after that and it broke into 7 different pieces. It was garbage after that. Maybe wetting the ball with rubbing alcohol while scrolling would help dislodge the gunk?

My son had a cleaning solution for our mighty mouse scrolling problems:
Use your vacuum cleaner with an attachment that has the narrower hard plastic end. Make sure the attachment is very clean itself! Turn on the vacuum, hold the mouse upside down and use the plastic attachment to push and scroll the small wheel at the same time. Do this in various directions. This appears to get all the obstructing particles out and certainly helped our mighty mouse reestablish his might.
If this doesn't work for you, maybe you could try standing on your head. But we never had to try that.
Certainly, Apple does need to make a better cleaning solution possible. But until then, the vacuum cleaner solution is working for us.

I recently had the same problem with my mouse only scrolling in one direction. Read thru the posts and it did not exactly solve the problem. Read thru the manual and tried flipping the mouse upside down and rubbed the mouse ball vigorously with a damp ipod cleaning cloth. 1 minute later - out comes some rubber erasures bits that my daughter had generated from using a pencil while working on her homework. Somehow it was transferred onto the mouse ball from possibly her fingers.
Bottom line - found the black rubber erasure bits on the white ipod cleaning cloth - and now my mouse is working again.

My mouse ball just packed up, I tried all the cleaning methods mentioned without success, so took it apart its fiddly to do and not recommended, the black cover that houses the ball has 3 tiny screws + a tape connector, snap it and you've had it ! remove the black cover you'll find a white cap that holds the ball in place and is easily prized off, you find the ball along with 4 very small wheels with axles + a mountain of fluff etc around and under the ball and element that has built up through use and its this that stops the ball making contact with the element under the ball, be careful removing and replacing the small magnetic wheels that you don't snap the axle holders (there very thin plastic up-stands) ! good luck if you try it.
Myn's in the bin !

Wow! Everyone seems to have a different solution for this problem. I guess I'll add mine to the list...
I have a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse and have experienced the same problem from time to time where I can only scroll in one direction. Pushing harder on the ball seemed to get it to respond a little better, but not consistently. At first I thought it was the batteries, and like others I thought a reboot fixed the problem at one point, but this is not the case. It is definitely a hardware maintenance issue.
My solution to this problem is a little less invasive than taking the mouse apart or squirting WD-40 or alcohol into the mouse. Instead, simply take a toothbrush and work the bristles around the edge of the ball. You'll be amazed at just how much junk comes out of there! After much frustration, performing this simple maintenance task for 30 seconds completely restored my mouse to a fully functioning Mighty Mouse.
I believe the small size of the ball makes these devices more prone to this problem than others with larger scroll wheels. Anyway, no need to call Apple Care... just brush your mouse's teeth every now and then and it will work perfectly for you! :)

I did this:
1- I pour 3 drops of WD-40 in the gap of the little track ball and turn the mighty mouse upside down for avoiding contact of the liquid with the inner electronics.
 I wonder what the long term effects of WD-40 solvent on the Mighty Mouse ball will be?

I don't know if this was said already:
I use the iKlear cleaning kit on my MM scroll bar and it works well with a few sprays and vigorous scrolling with the lint-free cloth.
I thin piece of scotch tape rammed between the mouse body and scroll wheel picks up some stuff.

Well my mouse has been messed up beyond repair.
It kept clogging up, and I kept rolling it on a cloth.
That only worked for a few minutes, and I found out why...
My scroll ball is scratched causing the mouse to stop scrolling.
I took it apart, tried to clean everything I could but it just doesn't work...

It's dirt in the mouse, press down the ball and spin it back and forth quickly, easiest done by holding the mouse with one hand and spinning the ball with your index finger on your other hand. Don't be shy. It needs a thorough rubbing :) Works every time...
Or you could go for a logitech G5 Laser precision gamers mouse. I use it on my Mac and it's worth every penny.

Worked on both my MM and the wired mouse. I just took a piece of printer paper and while on the desk I held the mice in place and pressed fairly hard with the paper between the ball and my finger and moved the paper around with fairly long motions. Keeping moving to a new spot on the paper after about 10 reps or you will just start putting what you removed from the ball back on it. Thanks for the help. I just wanted to post this particular method I used. Do several times if necessary and I think it should work.
To Amigo: At least the 1st post was useful. Yours my friend was not. I'm sure after all of the ball busting (pun not intended) you received, you wish you had a way to retract your post. Hugs.

I bought my iMac about a year ago and have had more-or-less constant scrolling problems with the mighty mouse. Since it was under warranty, Apple replaced the mouse twice...but after using the 3rd mighty mouse for a few weeks...same problem. would sometimes scroll up...sometimes scroll down..or left and right...but usually not in all directions.
I finally went to Office Depot and bought some "cleaning wipes for electronics." (80 wipes for about 5 bucks). I also bought a can of "cleaning duster." Again, about 5 bucks.
Now, when the mouse forgets how to scroll, I can fix the problem:
1. turn off the computer.
2. turn the mouse upside down and roll the scroll ball lightly over a cleaning wipe.
3. blow the scroll ball with the cleaning duster, and let it set for a few seconds.
This has worked every time for me.
I use the cleaning wipe over and over until it gets pretty much totally dried out...so the 80 wipes should be about a 10 year supply.
Hope this helps anyone having scrolling problems.
Incidentally, I LOVE the mighty mouse! It was just very frustrating until I found out how to solve the problem.

I have had the same problem as many others regarding the small scroll ball. Here's my solution.
I got a magnifying glass, a fine set of tweezers and can of compressed air.
1) Clean visible dust around the edge of the hole containing the ball with the tweezers. I was surprised how much was evident after a short period of use.
2) Slightly press the trackball down and blast a few seconds of compressed air, with provided straw, in all 360 degrees of the opening.
If you still have a problem, then hit it with air until it the ball scrolls correctly.
I've done this twice and my mighty mouse works perfect.

I've encountered this problem several times. My solution:
1. Get a lens cleaning cloth, of the type used to clean spectacle or camera lenses (no lint).
2. Spray the cloth with lens cleaning spray.
3. Lay the cloth on a flat surface.
4. Turn mouse upside down, roll ball on the cloth.
5. Check for normal function.
6. Repeat until it works properly.
Works every time. Any surplus spray simply evaporates. Oh, yes, clean the mouse mat with the same stuff.

Especially registered for this; there is a very simple solution that worked perfect for me, don't know how long it will last (first time using it and having the problem of not being able to scroll downwards, only upwards).
-Take a normal sheet of paper, of which you normally print a letter on or something;
-Turn your MightyMouse upside down, with the scroll-ball on the sheet- leave your mouse attached to your mac, open a window to check your motion with the mouse while rubbing it- you will hear a typical scrolling sound of a rattling wheel when you do it right (mechanical sound which you normally hear when you scroll);
-Rub the mouse slighty harder than normal use on the paper (press the bottom first, otherwise you will end up with dassboard and not to hard pls, it has to survive this action:));
-Continue as long as necessary, after 40 sec. you see the screen perfectly going up- and downwards;
-Try tot rub 360 degr., to 'clean' all the way round.
Turn your mouse in normal position and sim-sa-la-bim, the scroll-ball works fine again!:D
No need for wet panties, alcohol, special Apple-cleaning-whipes (I'm surprised not to find these in their Applestore yet, to be honest:rolleyes:)

I wonder if there is a quality control issue with some of these mighty mouse'. I've had mine for several months and it performs flawlessly. About once a month it will clog up and stop scrolling, I'll put it upside down on a piece of paper and roll it forwards, backwards and side to side 2 or 3 times, that's it. After that 3 second procedure it performs perfectly for a month or so.
Maybe some of the mice let in more dirt than others and I just got lucky with a tight one, I'm not sure.

Ok, so this is simple and easy and so far a guaranteed fix.
Spray a generous amount of lens solution/glasses cleaner fluid onto a micro fibre cloth (one used to clean your glasses or one used to clean the lens of your camera) and don't be shy, go ahead and saturate the cloth. Hold the mouse upside down and roll away for a few minutes with a page active so you can see the scrolling action come back. Took approximately 20 seconds to fix my mouse the 1st time, and a good solid 2 minutes to fix it the second, but no problems since then. I make this a routine at least once a month now and it keeps me trouble free.

While waiting on the line, I decided to press quite hard on the scroll button and try to scroll. That cured the problem, after that it only required the normal light touch to work properly. I do not know what was the cause of the problem, maybe dust(?), in any event it is working fine now.
You are awesome!!!! I just did a Google search for "might mouse scrolling issues" and found this thread! I also had the same problem where I could only scroll up. I did a hard scroll down as you suggested and my life is now sane again!
Great tip!

OK, this might sound a bit un-orthodox but after getting frustrated with the MM and thinking that I should try whatever it takes to get it to work since there was nothing to lose anyway, I toke it to the sink and washed the ball with a bit of dishwashing soap! let it dry overnight and it the MM was performing as new!!!! Second time I tried with another mouse (I hooked it up to quick I guess) it did scroll but not click yet. After letting it dry over the weekend it was as new again.
cheers

I have a mighty mouse 3 years now. Every now and then scrolling becomes an issue. I started solving it by just pressing down real hard to get the dirt out and it worked a couple times.
However, I found a better solution. Using a q-tip dipped in a first aid antiseptic (alcohol) I scrolled up and down and right and left until the problem was completely solved.

I tried all the suggestions above, but mine's just dead. When I run the paper over the ball it jiggles the cursor, but that's about it. Guess I'd better go out and buy a real mouse!

Quick fix: Nail polish/varnish remover and a piece of kitchen towel. Apply remover to towel, spread it on a desk and rub the upturned mouse like you're trying to sand a piece of titanium - ie Press really hard.
Repeat a few times.
Don't make the towel into a pad, keep it thin so that you can get maximum pressure.
The Remover also cleans the mouse shell nicely.
NB Someone will probably now tell me that the nail polish remover will cause the plastic to turn yellow and disintegrate within 24 hours, leaving nothing but a windows logo made of ash… I don't know :)

My wired mouse with the roller ball would only scroll down, not UP.
I turned it upside down & rolled it around on paper for a few minutes. That fixed the problem.
I've made a mental note to refrain from eating & mousing simultaneously

Tried all of the previous solutions, none worked. Used WD40 on a paper towel and rubbed it on the wheel, worked immediately.

my mouse would not scroll down for a long time ,, i tried several ideas but this time i was sucessfull ..I guess i was not rough enough the first time around ,, i just used the cloth to clean screens and turned the mouse upside down and rolled the Pi$$ out of it ,, and guess what it worked this time ,, the first few times i was sort of gentle but this time i was actually a bit rough but it worked
i hope you have the same results
