Mac mini and LCD monitor with DVI ????

Do I really need to purchase an LCD with a dvi connector? I have an older monitor that I hooked up to my mini with that white piece that came with the mini to connect it to the mini....and I dont believe that my old monitor is dvi, but I always hear people sayin you need a dvi with the mini. It looks similar to this one.

That's a VGA connector...

The Mini have DVI output, but I belive a DVI-VGA adapter is included, so it should be no problem to hook up VGA-only monitors (even if they're of the LCD variety).
