Hi all,

I use time machine to backup my MBP to an external HD on the iMac. However, it seems that the only way to ensure this happens consistently is to go to Finder in the MBP and connect to the iMac.

Question: is there a way to reconnect automatically, without going through Finder on the MBP? Sorry if this is elementary, I'm new to Mac in general.

Thanks!

Mike

Hi canuckle,

You should be able to pick and choose which drive(s) you wish to use for TM backups. Notice that I said drive or drives, as under Mac OS X 10.8 you can select more than one drive and then TM will alternate among these drives for its backups, effectively giving you more than one backup.

The drives you can pick must be formatted correctly (HFS+, journaled, not case-sensitive) and be "shared" (permissions must be set so you can access the drive over your network) over your LAN so that your MBP can mount the external HDD on your iMac. TM takes care of mounting the backup drive, backing up your files to that drive, and then unmounting the backup drive when finished. I do precisely this kind of TM backup on several systems, albeit via Mac OS X server software.

Follow this (http://osxdaily.com/2012/05/04/automatically-connect-to-network-drive-mac-os-x/) to set it up to login as a startup item.
