I have auto brightness on but how do I set it properly? Is it like iOS where i set a average brightness what I want (50%) and it will go from there?

The brightness controls are located in:
Sys prefs -> Displays -> Display

But as you can see they aren't very robust (if you have it, the ambient light sensing property is pretty cool).

Unfortunately the only way to adjust the default brightness when on power adapter or battery is a privilege reserved for power users and programmers as it takes some hacking: http://www.osxbook.com/book/bonus/chapter10/light/
