it probably won't do a lot, but it sure can't hurt to take the files (after you download them) from the "shared" file to a file on your computer, then delete them from the "shared" file. that would be one way they can see how many files your sharing, obviously. i would also keep uploading to a minimum if at all.
this won't help with the ip but is just a safe downloading procedure

This is NOT allowed on the MacRumors forums. Please read the rules first.
On a side note: that part of the film "Signs" when they wear the foil hats got my laughing!

Best approach is to just not do it. Not worth it.
Thanks for the chuckle MJ. :p

You could also try hiding behing your neighbores firewall. (hint, hint) :D
Don't you just love wireless networking.

to not get caught, don't do it, its something you use at risk if you choose to.

The best approach indeed mcarnes. Attempting to evade the feds is not a very wise idea.

If I were in your shoes I would be more concerned with the feds knocking on you door. But yes, it would be rather awkward having your neighbors asking why you have been using their wireless network for less than legal practices.

to true, to true. which is why i have since stopped, but there have been some interesting discussions on tWiT about who's in the wrong when using a wireless network. obviously it is stealing, but they are sending the waves into your house, through your body. kind of like puttting the stolen merchandise in your pockets. i'm sure there have been many discussions about this before and i'm not defending either side, just interesting to think about.
if your not already, listen to tWit (this week in tech)(anyone who reads this).

Actually my old PC -which is now usedd by step-dad - would automaticly connect to my neighbores network. I had even trouble forcing it to connect to my own, DAMN windows. And the reson for that was that PC was getting stronger signal from neighbores router than from my becouse they are on the opposite sides of the house.

A good discussion on this issue verozov. Hard to label something stealing when it is "inside" of your house. It does technically belong to them, but the signal is invading your private property, both sides of the story have interesting points/arguements.

How do they know who's connected? I'm not asking because I'd like to know if I'd get cought using someone's else's wifi, but to know if I can figure out who (if any) one is using mine
