Bush to lead inquiry into Katrina

US President George W Bush says he will lead an investigation into how the Hurricane Katrina disaster was handled.
"I'm going to find out over time what went right and what went wrong," he said in reply to criticism that the authorities were too slow to respond.

His focus, he added, was on helping the victims but there would be "ample time" for an investigation.

Officials in New Orleans have urged its last residents to leave the swamped city, saying it is now uninhabitable.

In an open letter, the city's Times-Picayune newspaper has demanded the sacking of top emergency service officials.

Ex-President Bill Clinton, and his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, have been among those to call for an inquiry.

'No blame game'

How the different levels of government had reacted to Katrina would be examined, Mr Bush said, but he refused to "play the blame game".

"We got to solve problems - there will be ample time to figure out what went right and what went wrong," he said in Washington.

America, he added, had to be sure it could respond properly to another disaster, whether natural or an attack with weapons of mass destruction.

Stressing his focus on victims, Mr Bush also pledged not to allow "bureaucracy... to get in the way of getting the job done for the people".

He also announced that Vice President Dick Cheney would visit Gulf Coast region on Thursday to help assess the government's work. This is going from bad to worse. Has nobody over there heard of an independent inquiry? Perhaps Bush will impeach himself. What kind of a system are you under over there? Your whole administration is becoming a satire on itself.

Christ, he may not have a clue what he's talking about half the time, but you'd think the people around him would make sure he was clued up enough about the given subject that he didn't come off looking like a kid in "high school" giving a class speech about something they completely forgot to study for the night before!

ARGH!

I agree absolutely. At least things don't seem to get too crazy (in either direction) when the power is split up better than it is right now. One of the things I get frustrated about is that, when the power changes hands, the two parties waste an awful lot of time and energy dismantling one another's programs and policies rather than moving forwards.

all politics and whitewashing aside, does the POTUS really have enough time to lead any investigation? in bush's case, that speaks to a bad understanding of delegation and time management.

politics and whitewashing now back in, this report (which is probably already drafted) will have less teeth than the 9/11 report.

The sad thing to me as a non-radical Christian, is feeling that all these policies that the current administration is pushing will not succeed, but instead cause a backlash of those against them, and in effect ending in the reverse of what he was trying to accomplish.

Too bad they NEED those issues to cover up how poorly the 'war on terrorism' and economy are going.

Bush will lead the investigation by being first in line
to the White House document shredders.

The rest will be covered by a massive shipment of text redaction Sharpies courtesy of FEMA.

This is truly an American disgrace.

The New Orleans government certainly has no cross to bear on not being able to respond - TWO close calls last year - everyone sat around and went "Man we'd be screwed if that happened to us."

I'm certainly not defending or applauding the administration, but come on.

No, we're pretty stupid.

But we're easily angered. Especially when someone or something pisses us off, and just keeps pissing us off. And we are pissed off. Bad enough the pre-planning was non-existent, but being impatient, the fact that they didn't react immediately is not good enough to us. We'll only put up with so much spin and bs before it begins to actually affect us and we start caring enough to want something done. As quickly and cheaply and as little effort on our part as possible. We may be stupid, but we are stupid with a vengeance. ;)

The president was obviously enjoying a robust laugh after Karl Rove whispered in his ear, "You have done well for a man with a bought and paid for degree from prestigious Yale University."

His private reply: "Yale, trail, mail, snail ... they're all the same to me. Ummm, prestigious ... that's something good, right?"

Nice to see that The Daily Show ripped the Bushies a new one...especially Ed Helms' report that FEMA, Homeland Security and other departments are working hard to contain the disaster that is Bush's reputation.

Note that Jon Stewart simply played the tape of Bush talking about re-building Trent Lott's house, but he didn't make a joke about it. Stewart simply said, "We'll be right back." Some things are just so absurd you really can't top them with a one-liner.

He's doing a really good job of it tonight as well. I wasn't aware that when the VP was down there doing damage control, talking about how appreciative everyone in LA is of the governments "efforts" that someone dropped the f-bomb on him. His reaction was one of fained surprise. Proving once again that the administration is either oblivious or just full of liars. Brian Williams was a good choice as a guest too. Good way to end the week, especially the last part.

Just watching the news. Today Bush said something to the effect of there's a lot of "second guessing, and I can assure you that I'm not interested in that."

Looks like he's doing a good job heading up this investigation.

With an imbecile such as himself leading any inquiry, results will be remarkably similar to what O.J. Simpson produced when he led the charge into finding his wife's vicious killer.

Clue: Look in the mirror ... the mirror, I say!
