Backup utility

I'm using .Mac's backup utility for rotine backups on my 1.5Ghz Powerbook (to 200gb external fw drive) - running Tiger 10.4.2. PowerBook has become sluggish recently and alot of apps installed I don't want to use... I want to do a clean install of Tiger. Would I be able to restore from my backups after a clean install or will I have trouble with 'permissions'... Otherwise I'll use CCC.
