I hope Apple has their 3rd party manufacturing up to speed already to avoid running out!

Well, of course. Black is much cooler. I'd buy one myself if I weren't broke.

I am split, I would say white. Since it would match everything I have. ;)

Black on the other hand matches my car. :)

If only there was a NanoTube that was in black. :)

It makes sense that black is selling better initially. The sort of Mac addict to buy the latest and greatest Apple product is going to want something different to stand out for the next few months before the nano does what every other iPod has done before it, and takes over the world. I can see the colour difference becoming more balanced over time though. :)

I'd lean slightly towards white... it's just cool that it looks like my other iPod shrunk :)

But primary colors would be cool too--or one with a chrome front AND back and a white wheel.

Once you go black...... :D

Seriously though. Everything looks better in black. Here's to a 2006 black powerbook. *drools*

i agree with madjew,

black is new, never really available before (U2 iPod doesnt count in my books) so its selling better because other white iPods are accessible and everyone has 'em already anyways.

I guess I'm getting white then :) . I hate having the exact same thing as others (Even though lots will probably have white, but hopefully, somewhat less common).

Interesting tidbit. I think the sales at the end of next week should better reflect it though. I mean I just got mine TODAY and they had literally just gotten the shipment from UPS.

Guess I'm in the minority... I bought a 2 gig white version.

I wanted a 1 gig shuffle, so the 2 gig version is more than enough for the gym, etc... and I love how the white version looks like a shrunk iPod, plus the nano tubes show up better on a white iPod.

Also, you can see how dirty a new black nano already looks in this review photo:

To me it looks like they have not removed the protective film from it. Looking at the left hand edge it looks like it's peeling up a little...

Either that or they're taking the photos inside of a house under construction. Looks like there's sawdust all over the picture.

That photo shows some dust, but mainly it's just a reflection of the photographer you are seeing.

The left edge isn't film--it's the thickness of the outer clear layer that iPods have (and iBooks used to). It's a really nice super-gloss look, with black or white UNDER a thick clear layer. Think about that for a bit and you'll realize that's no simple manufacturing challenge: the clear casing must be smooth and seamless INSIDE as well as outside.

I thought the same. BUT, plastic laptops scratch easily, and gloss black shows scratches worse than anything. My aluminum PowerBook has been scratch-immune for ages. I'm sold an anodized aluminum, even if a change would be more fun on some level. Now, if they can anodize it black and not have it scratch through, I'm in :)

Sorry, thought people realized the photographer's reflection in the pic, I was referring to how easily the dust was showing up.

black more popular than white

Good news! I never liked the white or silver metallic iBooks and PowerBooks. My Pismo is black. That hides the dirt and scratches better. More over the Pismo is made of a tough plastic that does not interfere with Wi-Fi and has withstood six years of rough and tumble portable life including being dropped twice.

Give be black for the new iBooks, PowerBooks, iPals and iPods.

Don't get me wrong, my Lombard has survived much abuse--but it SHOWS scratches all the same. (My Al PowerBook is much better that way--so is the iPod Mini.) So I'm sure a glossy iPod shows them even more.

Still love the new look :)

I like the black, but I don't know if the nano tubes (is that what they are called), would look that good over it.

I doubt Apple is form-fitting an inner-case against an outer case. They've probably manufactured a single-piece clear case, painting its inner surface.

This is a fairly common technique for people who build scale models for things like automotive tail lights. I've also seen a PC case-mod (http://www.bit-tech.net/modding/2005/09/01/macro_black/1.html) done this way. (It's worth reading the story of this mod - it's one the most involved and best looking I've ever had the pleasure of reading about.)

Agreed. The metal shell is one of the things I like about my (silver) mini.

I remember reading (back when the TiBooks were introduced) that Steve was very upset by the fact that they could anodize titanium into almost any color, but not black. At which point he decided to go for the bare-metal look.

I don't know if the inability to anodize-black is true for aluminum as well as titanium, but it might explain why we haven't seen such a device yet.

I would like to see what a black nano looks like in each of the tubes. For that matter, I would like to see a large picture of a white nano in each of the tubes.

The only picture in the apple store is one small picture of 4 white nanos in tubes.

Just arranged to send back my 4gb black nano because the front scratches increadibly easily - even wiping with a t-shirt caused some very fine scratches which show up conspicuously due to the black colour. The screen also appears to flex when touched.

I have a few music players and other devices with LCD screens but none are this fragile. As for the design (ignoring the scratches etc), the nano is pretty amazing but I will treat the white replacement I have ordered very carefully.

Do NOT put your in a pocket or next to anything abrasive like a soft cotton t-shirt!
