I updated to 6.0.1 on my iPad2. When it came back up it had the screen with a usb cable and iTunes logo, seemed like it wanted me to hook up tp itunes.
I did. I wound up having to factory restore my ipad and now am in the middle of restoring all my aps. Dont know yet what content i'll be able to restore or not.

Updating any device carries the risk that something will go wrong.

That can range from the update not working and you having to retry it (successfully) to your device no longer working.

It's always a good idea to back up first, so make sure you sync with iTunes or manually do an iCloud backup.

Always a good idea to back up in the cloud AND sync to iTunes on your computer before updating iOS - especially if you intend to sync with iTunes later to restore all your own music etc. I've lost count of the number of times I've synced and find that there's items on the device but not in iTunes or vice-versa and I can't remember if I care or not.
