I have a 2011 Air, and recently bought a rMBP thinking I would upgrade.

I totally understand that the rMBP is overpriced - I was disappointed in the lack of quad core processor and discrete graphics, but thought the screen would be worth it. And purchase price wasn't the top issue for me.

Bottom line - I returned the rMBP I have an IPad3, and I really appreciate the retina screen when I hold it close enough to appreciate the resolution. But for me the laptop retina screen wasn't held close enough to be worth the cost, battery life, and weight.

It's a great machine, but for me the 1 generation old Air still does the job.

Just sharing in case others are thinking about the rMBP.

I have a 2012 11" MBA ... ordered from Apple with 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and a 2.0gHz i7.

I also have an early-2011 15" MBP - with a 2.0gHz QC i7 and a 512GB SSD.

I was waiting on the 13" MBPr; I saw it as my opportunity to finally get down to one laptop. I use the 15" with my 27" TBD and travel with the MBA.

Well, I was disappointed. Like you, price wasn't my main concern ... but the 13" MBPr is overpriced. I walked away from the Apple Store thinking I'd just as soon bite the weight bullet and spend the extra $100 for a well-specified 15" MBPr. At least I'd be getting a QC processor and discrete graphics. Alternatively, I could spend a lot less and get a fully tricked-out 13" MBA.

The slim portability gains won by the 13" MBPr were effectively negated by the limitations of the hardware, which are very apparent to those with somewhat demanding usage. The point of all this hand-wringing is that the keeper here is the MBA.
