Apart from the meaning of nano itself, NANO uses Samsung's NAND, so it named NANO.

Nano denotes something small. "Nano Science" is the science of building tiny machines out of carbon molecules. They are hoping that one day these nano machines can do things like deliver drugs directly to individual cancer cells and kill the cancer cells without damaging other healthly cells. This is one application of nano technology.
It does not have anything to do with NAND from Samsung.

Probably going smaller was a good naming convention, since a swing the other direction would probably have meant naming the new device the Max iPod.

Which could probably get a little confusing, and probably spark a trademark lawsuit.

And keeping it mini is still a little confusing with two very different products sharing that name -- Mac and iPod.

I want a mini ...

I hate minis ...

Didn't Chrysler design the mini motor?

NANO-technology is a great buzz word to use right now. Apple probably just used it to jump in on the hype.

Nah ... at Apple they were very impressed that Hummer released a "nano" version of their mastodont (reffered to as H3 nano or something)

Nano was probably named nano because a nanometer is a really small unit of measurement.Much smaller than a iPod Nano or a pencil. There are a billion nanometers in a meter
