Got the poetic slim line in today, it feels like a pretty solid case. The Smart Cover feels like a fake leather Smart Cover. It's a little stiff out of box but will wear in over time. Got it on amazon for 5 dollars and its well worth it. It is the slightest bit thicker than my extreme Mac micro folio but it doesn't have the stand off function on the back which I really like. Check out the pics

Nice! Can you take a pic of it next to the naked ipad to see the thickness difference? Thanks!

Thanks! Could you give me the measurements of the case? How much gauge does it add to the mini? Thanks a lot in advance! Going to get a custom made sleeve and thus really need the figures (won't get my case until next friday :( )

Is the cover magnetic, like does it stick to when folding it up? I ordered a Moko case that was similar to the Poetic one and it doesn't do that, so trying to put it in the typing position was impossible because it kept falling.

It adds about 1 cm to height and width with abut 2cm to the thickness.

it ADDS 2 cm to the thickness? Or is it including the smartcover? That sounds quite much

Thanks for the pics! I'm a little disappointed of the silver logo? I hoped it was just embossed and not noticeable. Oh well, for $5, it's still worth it.

It has sleep wake magnet but not one to keep it in triangle stand form. I didn't have any problems keeping it in typing position though

Does the cover stay tight on the screen on its own in the closed position or is it just loose and floppy? Does the cover have a tendency to bow up in the middle after being used as a stand or does it actually lay flat?

I guess I'm confused as to whether or not the magnets exist to keep the cover closed or are they only for the sleep/wake function?

*edit* also, does the cover easily lay flat around against the back when flipped around?

Cover stays on pretty tight when closed, no floppy business.
The case stays pretty flat on screen even after being folded up. And also stay pretty flat against the back when open.

The magnets keep the cover closed and activate sleep wake function. Overall it's a great case for the price!

I got both my Black and Navy SlimLine cases in today. For $5 its a excellent case. I think at $20, it would still be a great case, and will probably be better than most cases from the bigger names priced at $30-$40. It's true to it's name and is probably one of the most slim cases available.

The style/type of case really isn't for me. The tri-fold cover takes a little too much work to get the stand modes right. They work, but getting them into position takes longer that it would with other style cases. This may be due to the case needing to be broken in more, but even then I don't think the stand modes will be as stable as those in other styles (i.e. the style used by the Devicewear Ridge & Speck FitFolio, or even the style used by the Yoobao Executive case).

I just got mine today and one issue: the fabric on the inside of the case smells TERRIBLE! I can't describe what the smell is (somewhat fishy maybe?), but it is definitely NOT a pleasant one. There's no way I can carry it around like that. Glad it was only $5 or I'd be pissed off.

I noticed a strong smell from mine right when I opened the packaging, but I can't smell it anymore unless I put my nose right up to the case. It's very faint now compared to earlier this afternoon, so maybe yours will lessen too.

Got mine. Blue color.

Nice slim profile. Auto on/off works.
Very nice cutouts for the buttons, speakers, and ports.

Kinda smelly. Hard to take off once it's on.

Tri-fold only works in one position which is the standing position. Laying position is impossible because the tri-fold will just unravel.

Overall decent case for the price.

I had that problem initially, but once the case is a little less stiff, it becomes much easier. Mine stays in the typing position just fine now.

The smell can be minimized by wiping the inside of the front cover with a bounce dryer sheet (lightly).

Great case. For the price, I am ordering in more colors. I'm a happy customer!:):D

Just curious, but will it scratch if you take your iPad out of the case and put it back in frequently?

So is this essentially the same case as the Joy Factory one? Just rebranded?

I have the Joy Factory and got it for what I thought was a good price on Mac Mall for $36, but $5 is way better.

The only difference I see is maybe the Poetic cutout for the volume buttons aren't centered like what I see on my case. Can anyone who owns the Poetic cas confirm that the cutouts all line up correctly? I know other "cheap" cases were cheap because they were made from pre-production models.

Thanks.

The cut outs appear to be fine on the two that I have (Black & Navy). I had a Joy Factory case for a short time before returning it... The main difference between the two is the feel/texture of the faux leather. The Poetic SlimLine has a pebbled leather look, and i'm not sure what to call the Joy Factory. Basically it comes down to a style or look preference. IMO, even if you think the Joy Factory looks better, you couldn't convince me that it looks $30 better. :D

Excellent. Looks like I'll check it out. Unfortunately the black and navy ones don't have Prime shipping. Will see if that changes in the next couple of days before ordering.

Update: well, since it was free shipping anyway, order it today.

The case snaps on. I'm kinda afraid it would totally scratch the corners. One corner I had to use a lot of force. But in order to take it off, you have to pry it off with your fingernails or screwdriver.

I have a Moko case that's basically the same. Fits better and doesn't have the smell.

Yeah, I was going to recommend ordering it regardless of Prime since it's free. I checked my order and saw that it shipped on the 13th and I got it on the 15th (CA to TX), so it should be pretty fast regardless.

By no means should you need a screwdriver. Mine is not that tight. Bro, do you even lift?

Anyways, I'm really worried about scratches now. I might take the mini in and out quite often and the only real reason I want to go with this case is to protect the back from scratches.:(

Sorry for being annoying...I have no experience with the silver alu backs of the iPads and how sensitive they are.

I see no way that this is any different than say the SwitchEasy CoverBuddy, Devicewear Ridge, Speck FitFolio.. all these cases snap on. The key to not scratching your iPad is to go slow when removing it.

Also, for the person asking what is different between this and the Joy Factory - I will add the Joy Factory has a line of stitching around the smart cover area.

At the price point this case is going for its hard to beat IMO

You usually will get scratches from metal on metal, not plastic on metal. I wouldn't be too worried.

Getting my case Monday. I see that on the black case the silver logo stands out. Does it look like you could scratch off that silver with something? For $5 this case was a no brainer, but man do I hate obtrusive branding like this.

Here's my review from Amazon (after I wrote this I read the reviews here and it DOES smell like fish, but I had to put my nose right to it to pick that up):

I ordered two of these, one in blue and one in white. Received a black one today--close enough to blue!

In my notes below, I'm comparing it to the Apple Smart Cover. I know that's not entirely fair, since the Smart Cover costs 8x as much (at this writing, with introductory pricing) but at least it provides a baseline for comparison.

Pros:
--Looks great
--Fits perfectly, all the cutouts are in the right place etc.
--About as lightweight as seems possible for its function
--Protects the back, unlike the Smart Cover
--Paid $5 with free shipping, and it is well worth that. Actually, $5 is a great bargain.
--Magnet in cover works fine for auto on/off when opening/closing
--When the front cover is folded to a triangle, it holds the ipad mini up nicely for landscape viewing. Feels as stable as the Apple Smart Cover in this position. If you're using the folded back cover to type in landscape mode, it's about as good as the Smart Cover (which is to say, IMHO, barely useful).
--3 year warranty from Poetic (if they will be around for that long)

Cons:
--When the cover is folded back flat, it doesn't make for really comfortable holding. Smart Cover is better in this regard.
--The front cover is nowhere near as supple as that on the Smart Cover. A little concerned that with repeated folding it may not close firm and flat over the screen.
--I'm concerned about the durability of the hinge, which is essentially cloth covered with plastic.
--The edges of the front cover look like they might delaminate. They are not sealed in the same way as the Smart Cover.
--Not exactly a con, but I don't know how much protection this will provide for dropping. Certainly more than the Smart Cover which has no back. The back on the Poetic is essentially hard plastic. No cushioning. Absolutely will protect from scratches.
--Surprisingly hard to get out of the case (maybe I'll learn how to do it easily), which is good in a fall but not so good if you want it to go in and out a lot. One of the things I like about the Smart Cover is easy on and easy off. I'll probably want to keep the Poetic cover off for use in the house, simply because I like the feel of the iPad mini and don't like to encumber it needlessly.

Summary:
Buy it if it stays so inexpensive, if only to use when you're taking your iPad Mini out of the house. If you have the $s you might also want to have a Smart Cover for in house use, because less protection may be needed at home and the Smart Cover is lighter, feels better with the front folded all the way back, and goes on and off easier (if you like to use the iPad Mini sans cover when possible). I plan to try a Skinkomi skin on the back for use with the Smart Cover.

My white case arrived today and while I don't hate it, I'm not yet totally impressed either.

First, it does not smell like fish, mine doesn't smell at all. But some edges looked a little worn already. It definitely is a little tricky to get the iPad in (have yet to try taking it out). The cutout for the volume/silent is not centered on my case, too. While the stand works fine in the movie position, I can't get it to hold in the typing position yet.

It does look great on my white mini and I really like the weight, the size and the feel (it does add grip). It's definitely worth the 5$, it's in no way worth the 20 bucks I paid (thanks to shipping) nor the 30 or what they want on their website.

My white case arrived today and while I don't hate it, I'm not yet totally impressed either.

I would email them. My cutouts are perfectly centered and while the typing positing is tricky at first mine seemed to settle in after a few days of use

I bought this case as an alternative to my other $2.99 case "Moko" that I got on Amazon. The Moko adds a good deal of bulk but the design is better for using it as a stand and doesn't run into the issue of a forward drop as the majority case/covers create because they fold to the rear of the iPad.

In all... Hell... who can honestly complain about a $5 dollar case. For the price.. it is a good deal. It is much slimmer than my Moko but its not as slim as some of the pics I saw. In all, its a solid case and worth the $5.

I put mine out to air for an hour and the smell is gone. To me it did indeed smell like fish of come kind.

Mine smells weird and it is a bit fishy I think, weird....

Like the case so far, only disappointment is that when you put it into typing mode the cover does not hold magnetically like the smart covers.

Can't complain for the price though!

Mine smelled pretty bad at fist... not exactly fishy but not good. It went away after leaving it out in the open for a few days. mine closes with the magnets but the constant folding into stand mode is making it not lay flat. Still, I like this case.

Got my navy blue today. Did not notice whether it was "dishonest." Actually would not have noticed anything if I wasn't following this thread.

I ordered two of these (Navy and Pink) neither smelled like fish, but these cases are horrible for other reasons. The pleather is some of the cheapest I have ever seen and the folding portion of the cover is a joke. Without the magnets to keep the triangle together it's barely functional. The cover of the case doesn't lay flat and its gets worse the more you fold the cover.

I will be returning these to Amazon as soon as possible.

My advice is keep looking if you are thinking about ordering this case.

For the price of $5, your asking for too much. I just got my case today and for $5, I'm real happy. Now if I paid $30, I wouldn't be happy and would return the case. BTW, when i first took the case out the packaging, I too noticed the bad fishy smell. After a few hours of using the smell did go away.

Asking too much? The cases look like garbage and they aren't worth $1

Mine lays flat, doesn't smell, and for 5 dollars are you expecting real leather? Case is built solid and works pretty good, worth the 5 dollars for sure.

I feel the same way as you guys in regard to the smell. When I had opened the package I was like, "dear lord I didn't order fish..." Besides that this is a steal at 5 bucks. The folding mechanism needs work but it is bearable. You honestly do get what you pay for but in this "case" it's a bit more.

Just got the poetic slimline yesterday, and after playing with it for a bit, I have to say it's absolutely fantastic! For $5 you cannot find a better value. I was a bit skeptical on the quality, but once i held it, it far exceeded my expectations. Quality is great and it's very slim/lightweight. Sleep/wake and stand functions work perfectly. I may order in additional colors I'm so impressed.

I don't like how the tablet sags at an angle when you fold the cover back. I might just have to go with rear shell+smart cover
