I've always enjoyed listening to music at home when it rains, even though I live in Los Angeles where it hardly ever rains.

I want to create a playlist with songs that people listen to when it rains, but when I ask my friends for suggestions they always give me the same bands like Slowdive and The Cure. I want suggestions from people who don't listen to the music I do, and hopefully find something new in the process. Thanks.

Not artists specifically, but actual songs. They don't have to be about rain, they just have to sound like it should be played while it's raining outside.

Basically, I want songs that sound just like how this picture looks:

well i don't know if it's your cup o' tea, but i'm partial to "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" by B.J. Thomas...topically it's perfect for you :) . I could suggest some of this which i listen to as well:

Cat Stevens: "Maybe You're Right", "Where Do The Children Play?", "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out", and "Trouble". To go along with that accoustic sound, I enjoy Endless Mike And The Beagle Club, and very indie band i found on purevolume a while back. Though my favorite of all the softer sounds is The Decemberists..great stuff. In some instances, Bob Dylan lends well to a rainy day if you get the right songs...

The Stills and Interpol give you that depressed sound you sometimes get when it rains. Dashboard Confessional's album "Places You've Come To Fear The Most" is a good one too (their last good cd). A bit different of a sound but still a sadder mood. A more passive rather than sad mood that would fit in well are Death Cab For Cutie and their side project The Postal Service.

For a different kind of rain music, i like to throw on some Miles Davis, particularly his older stuff. In particular songs like "So What", "Tempus Fugit", and "Walkin'." Though i suppose this may not go well since it is one big playlist..just keep him in mind ;)

Still an even more different rain sound i enjoy is Kenna's album "New Sacred Cow." He has a distinct electronica rock sound that may not be liked by everyone, but can lend itself very nicely.

And i'm just gonna stop here because i can keep going on and on, it's kinda sad... :o

Hey DeSnousa how do you link to iTunes Music Store?
It's one think for me to post a bunch of songs but if I could put the links up it'd make it easier for anyone who's interested.

Thanks

Dan Fogelberg - "Another Auld Lang Syne"

Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.

She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand,
The food was totalled up and bagged.
We stood there lost in our embarrassment,
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two,
But couldn't find an open bar.
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store,
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.

She said she'd married her an architect,
Who kept her warm and safe and dry,
She would have liked to say she loved the man,
But she didn't like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her,
And that her eyes were still as blue.
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw,
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores,
And that I must be doing well.
I said the audience was heavenly,
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'auld lang syne'......

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain .........
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain ..............

Yeah, that's always the first song to come to my mind because it actually has rain sounds in it! I used to only be interested in finding songs exactly like that, but now I'm trying to broaden my horizons a bit.

The entire Parachutes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?s=143441&playlistId=471800) album by Coldplay, the slow songs are the best for rainy days, especially "We Never Change." Thursday Afternoon (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playListId=49761325) by Brian Eno is a great rainy day album. I also like the song "Neon Lights" from U2's Verigo single, that has to be one of the best covers I've ever heard. Oh, there's just too many songs to list.

Fishes,
narco.Duff-Man says...that really *is* a great Hammill record. I have all his stuff - I guess I am a bit of a fanatic about it - I actually flew to London for the VdGG reunion show at the Royal Festival Hall in May. His newer stuff is a bit spotty though, not terrible by any means but they seem to all sound very similar - I can't tell many of them apart. Not really the same mood as Over, but the one called "Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night" is very good...a very very dark record...the next one he did after that - "Silent Corner and the Empty Stage" is generally considered one of his classics so you may want to check out either of those. A few years ago he released a 2cd solo live package called "Typical" that is also extremely good - captures the raw, rough edges of his solo performances. I'd also recommend the cd of his John Peel sessions - again, the rough, rawness of his voice but you get sessions from the early 70's up to the late 80's so it's a good selection of stuff.....oh yeah!

Cold - Rain Song

When it rains I dont mind
Let me stand here all night
Did she take her whole life
Let me know she's alright

[Chorus]
And every time it rains
I feel her holding me
And everytime it rains
Are the angels crying

I'll stay strong, I'll be fine
Carry on with my life
I still stare at the sky
Pray for rain, all the time
Why'd you run? Did you hide
Why'd you leave, no good bye
When the clouds, take the sky
Does a soul, give you life?

And every time it rains
I feel her holding me
And everytime it rains
Are the angels crying
And every time it rains
I feel her holding me
And everytime it rains
All the angels cry for you

I'll never be the same x2
be the same x3

And every time it rains
I feel her holding me
And everytime it rains
Are the angels crying x2

I would recommend almost anything by Rilo Kiley. I always get in a Rilo Kiley mood on rainy days.

I live in Scotland, where it rains incessantly. Most people complain about this, but I've always liked it - we get maybe a week or two of pathetically weak sunshine every year, so most of my iTunes library could fit into this thread.

However, it made me think of rainy Sundays back when I was about 16 or so. School was always looming next day, everyone my age was angst-filled, and there really wasn't much to do at all, so we all stayed in our bedrooms listening to music. And of course, since it's Scotland, it was always raining....

Morrissey - Every Day Is Like Sunday
(I lived in one of those coastal towns that they forgot to close down)

The Jesus & Mary Chain - Darklands
(visit the concrete landscapes of East Kilbride on a rainy day and you'll understand immediately why everyone thought this lot were miserable)

The Sundays - Here's Where The Story Ends
(and the whole album, which was played to death)

Bang Bang Machine - Geek Love
(if anyone knows where I can get a downloadable version of this, it would make my year - it took forever just to track down the vinyl version, and it's one of my all-time favourite songs - spent many an hour feeling sorry for myself while listening to it)

And nearly everything by The Cure. Natch
;)

Seriously. I agree with all of your choices. Since I've listened to the Cure longer than any other band I can think of, they're always on the top of my list of rainy day music listenings. Also, ask and you shall receive. I have the song you're looking for -- it was on a Peel Sessions comp, so it may not be the exact version you want, but it could make do until you do find it. I will PM you the link.
