Throughout the past couple of years I've always considered Tori Amos to be one of those artists who are very pompous and have one of those "my lyrics are so profound and interesting" attitudes. I was dreadfully wrong!
I decided to get the Boys For Pele album a listen, and boy am I impressed. There is so much emotion in the album. Songs like 'Professional Widow' have an increadible amount of passion.
The lyrics are interesting, even if they are a bit too abstract to be fully comprehended. I particularly like the lyrics to 'Muhammad My Friend'.
I looked up what other people thought of the lyrics at SongMeanings.net (Link (http://www.songmeanings.net/artist.php?aid=49)) and I found other people's interpretations of the songs to be very interesting.
The songs are very melodious. I love the last half of 'Father Lucifer' with all the vocal layering to create a multifaceted melody that really occupies all the facets of your attention.
Vocally, Amos is strong. Her voice might not be very powerful, but it carries emotion well, and it is consistent. It has a very good tone. She isn't afraid to morph her voice for dramatic effect, which many singers shy away from.
The album spans a very wide range of musical style. There are elements of folk, pop, rock, and almost any genre one could think of. 'Professional Widow' has a very strong rock vibe while 'Talula (The Tornado Mix)' is a beat-driven dancable track. 'Mr. Zebra' is playful, almost like a lullabye. The album is like a roller coaster in that you never get bored with the styles Amos uses.
I haven't gotten much of a chance to listen to her other material. Once I start getting tired of Boys for Pele I plan on moving to a different album, probably Scarlet's Walk, I always liked 'Sorta Fairytale'.
