My macbook is a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and I bought it back in 2008/09.
The computer will not turn on unless the power adapter is plugged in. When I unplugged it it stayed on but the battery was still an x. I went to my mac preference panel and it read as such:

Do I have to get a new battery? replace the computer? can I still use it as long as the charger is attached? and will it hurt my computer if I use it this way?

~Sorry for so many questions and Thanks in advance.

Not necessarily. My brother has one and his battery indicator also has an "X" but it's a brand new battery. But the laptop also won't stay on unless it's plugged in either. So maybe a slightly different issue. Trying to figure it out now.

Reset the SMC. Might help. If not the battery is dead. Your brother should reset the SMC too but if that doesn't work it is defective.
