View Full Version : Internet Connectivity Problems?

im new to this forum website but ive used it before to solve several other problems i tried looking for a fix to my problem but havent achieved anything this time.. so here i am.. now my problem..

so i bought the new 21.5 imac, late 2012 model, came home worked awesome for a day.. no joke.. a day.... after that i started noticing that some websites wouldnt work and by some i mean about 80 percent of websites aswell as the mac appstore which just never loads,, google works, but when i search something on google and i click a link.. it takes me to the "safari cannot connect to server" white screen, i tried chrome, mozilla, but both give me similar errors. i have tried the DNS changing in the network settings and still nothing... keep in mind that all my OTHER devices such as ipod, sisters ipad, sisters laptop, my windows desktop all work perfectly fine. i have tried resetting safari, and nothing i have tried resetting my router, and nothing. the only thing that seems to work is when i restart the whole mac i get my internet connectivity back on for a couple hours, and then comes the problem again,, i have also tried to delete the cache files in the preference folder, this is getting really annoying considering i havent even had the computer for long. and whats even worse is that my sisters cheap little laptop works perfectly fine when this 1400 dollar computer cant even connect me to the internet... ive seen ppl with this problem i have tried what works for them and still nothing. works for a while then the problem comes up again. i have ALSO tried using a wired connection as well and i get the same problem it works for a while and then the problem comes back... if anyone has any idea of what to do please help me fix this, thanks in advance!

How are you connecting? Wifi or Ethernet? If wifi, you router could be the issue..You can test this by running an ethernet cable directly into the new Mac..If that fails as well, I'd say a return is on the cards.

ive tried both wifi and with the ethernet cable as i stated above.. i doubt its my router, all my other devices such as ipod, laptops, and my windows desktop have no problems whatsoever

Okay, try these steps before you call Apple:

Disk Verify and permissions repair:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1782


PRAM reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379


SMC Re-set:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964


If none of the above help, try re-booting the modem / router, after that you've done all you can and it's off to Apple..good luck:)

tried that already but i forgot to mention it up on top... im seeing alot of these problems on forums, with mountain lion and safari 6 so maybe its a bug.. but i dont understand how it hasnt been fixed... i might give apple a call tomorrow

I've set up 2 new 21.5's and have had no issues at all...I think you will need a replacement..It;s brand new, so don't worry they will swap it out for you..:)

for customers or for yourself? my ISP is att and ive read macs have problems connecting to the router they provide you with, the motorola nvg510 not sure if this could be it, i really dont want to go through the hassle of returning it but if its best to do it then i will...

Try moving this folder to the desktop and restart.
Do not delete it yet, although it would not be a big problem it is always better to keep it for a bit.

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

If invisible you can go there by pressing command-Shift-G in Finder or in Finders Menu bar click go and then click Go To Folder, enter /Library/Preferences and drag the SystemConfiguration to desktop.

All network settings are in this folder, after a restart all settings are reset and you have to connect again.
Does this work?

so you seem to be having issues with a Mac, certainly Macrumours has a hive mind that can sometimes help.

It's better to write logically. your data could be interpreted as a bit FUD

your initial complaint seems to be that whilst using WiFi, only 20% of your chosen websites are connecting, whether you use Safari, Chrome or Firefox.
You have Google.com available, but none of the subsequent links are loading.
Other iPod, iPads, Winxx in your WiFi domain seem unaffected.

However, or because of this, you have already edited your 2012 iMac advanced network settings including domain name server attributes and started to delete random files.

It's the last step that worries me slightly. it's very easy to accidentally type duff information here - a comma instead of a period - a gateway that isn't actually there.... tho' OS X tries to prevent this

try these remedial steps.

create a new user account. System Preferences/Users & Groups/+
login as new user. (this can mediate the random file deletion and/or some other broken stuff)
edit the System Preferences/Network/ pane in this new user account.
Set "Location" - 'Automatic'
WiFi 'Turn On' + 'Join Network'
Configure IPv4 'Using DHCP' (seems likely that your WiFi is DHCP)

If you really want to add DNS credentials in Advanced
feel free to type these

your WiFi Router IPv4 base address usually 192.168.1.1 or similar (10.0.1.1 if Apple Airport default)
208.67.220.220 (OpenDNS primary server)
8.8.8.8 (Google DNS)

having tried this, or at least having documented your current WiFi basic and advanced settings, feel free to report here your detailed setup situation. What sort of WiFi router; are you running DD-WRT and which version?; who is your DSL provider; what channel is your WiFi using; do you have neighbours with WiFi on the same channel?

Both for friends...One next door and he's having no issues either over wifi or ethernet....You seem to have covered the bases here, so Apple is the next stop...No harm in trying the tip above though..

cyclo i will try the new user and i will get back after sometime to see if any problems occur, havent tried that one yet. Thanks alot for the help guys i really appreciate it.
