I hate this, I just got a call from my friend who works in the oil field. The only gas left in East Texas is Supreme and that is going quick. And I should feel fortunate. There is no gas left in southern Texas. Damn you Rita, as if waiting in line 1 hour for gas is not bad enough, I will have to buy the $3/gallon gas.

Just saw an article in parts of Ontario it got as high as $2.24 / litre today.
(For the conversion challenged that would be USD $7.23 / gallon).
That strikes me as gouging though, here in BC it's still only at $1.20 / litre.

I think that you havin to pay more for gas is secondary to all of the damaged and screwed up lives that Rita may cause...also $3 a gallon is about average

When it comes down to it, we all still have to buy the gas anyway, so, for me, it's an annoyance, but something that has to be done anyway. I'm just glad my 20 year old car still gets 33+ mpg. :D

The higher the gas prices go, the more incentive there is to conserve it and find alternatives to it. Not only do we power our transportation devices with gas but we use it to make plastics and other vital materials. Sure there might be short term negatives to a high gas price but the long term positives are definitely worth it.
Not to mention that the price down under has been at $4.30 a gallon for 3 months now and is only continuing to go up.
Sure a hurricane or two is a bad way of forcing us off gas but it just shows how reliant we are on it. Hopefully not many lives are lost this time around.

don't get me wrong...I feel for the people, I have two friends bringing there families from houston to stay with me this weekend. They left over 12 hours ago and are not even a 10th of the way here.
But in the mean time, have no gas sucks because by the time I leave work I will not have to worry about 3 dollar gas cause there will be none.

The pipelines affected by Katrina were those going to fl and up to nc/va. We had gas go up $.89 in one day. Then we started running out.
I heard that the central US will be affected the same as the Southeast was with the arrival of rita.
Sounds like a rough fall and winter.
When I had my house built I specified electric heat pump while everyone else in the area has natural gas. Why you ask? Because you can make electricity from many sources, but natural gas is only natural gas, and it looks like it will be very expensive this year, now that the Galveston area is getting wacked.

Wonderful . Katrina made our gas jump about $0.60 to the point where it was actually above the national average (something that almost never happens here).

Indeed: corn-country Iowa. Fortunately the worst we have to worry about here is floods, tornadoes, and snow/ice storms. Just checked the local station and gas is already up $0.17 from pre-Rita levels.

Who knows...I heard that there where lines of people following the gas trucks to stations so that right after they refilled them they were in line to get gas. I live in Palestine, Texas. I am in Tyler right now and all my friends and coworkers have told me as of 7 tonight only 3 stations has gas left and that cars were backed up for blocks in line.

I had planned on filling up on Monday but decided to do so today. I know, I know, it's people like me who contribute to the rising costs but, I drive a Civic that gets 39 mpg and a tank lasts about a month so I don't feel all that bad about it. It's those who drive mini tanks that should be feeling remorse.

Gah, I can't decide what to do.
I'm supposed to see Coldplay tomorrow night in Dallas at 7pm. I drive a Jetta, and SHOULD be able to make it there and back on one tank, but I'm not toally sure.
Seems like a pretty big risk to take.

I'm in Glaveston county and last I checked our store said . . . closed.
But yesterday it was $2.64-70
I luckily have a full tank and am probably out of here in the next 6 hours. Right now Galveston is "safe" west side and all, but if that thing moves at all we get the eye.
I need sleep.

Just grab a 5 gallon gas tank at the local hardware store (or on the way if there aren't any open between 10pm and 8am) and fill it up before you go. in a Jetta, that should give you a good 150 mile buffer.

That was one of the nice things about living in Texas.....cheap gas. Same for Wyoming. Now it's $3.25
I can't complain too much, I've had the same tank for 6 weeks since I've been biking everywhere. Now it's like I get 100mpg :D

It's not quite so bad here yet...hovering around $2.59/gal for ethanol. Went as high as $3.09 during Katrina. Cheaper, but still not at a level I'd prefer. 'Course I'm still of the mindset that anything more than about ~$1.40/gal is too expensive. :p

I come from Toronto. Weird to see petrol prices so high since it was around $0.80 6 months ago, although it was always higher than in the US.
Anyway, here in Oz, I pay the equivalent of around $4 per gallon, US dollars. I don't even know why Americans are complaining. We didn't even HAVE a hurricane and our petrol prices have always been higher than yours.
I'm glad the prices are evening out and Americans are paying more. I say....good. About time.

Don't you think it should be the other way, that your prices level to ours and you and us pay less. Why would you want us to waste more money on a already overpriced product. If gas goes anywhere close to 4 a gallon in the US, there would be anarcy. Americans wont pay it because there is NO reason for those prices to exisit. And the fact that your counrty puts up with it stuns me. I am curious why it is so high there. Do they tax your gas really high, etc?

Taxes is high indeed on petrol, you guessed right.
Canadian see no reason as to why americans complain when you pay per gallon and we pay per liter. In the end we are paying way more for petrol since the last I can remember. We are getting ripped off, what's up with that?
This is sickening indeed, its time to take my bicycle more often. I already walk a lot as it is. :)

The argument generally would be (and I'm not going to take sides here), that when you consider the harm vehicle emissions cause to the environment, higher prices are good because they cause people to think more about their driving, and drive when they have to, not just to be lazy.
It appears to be working here in Vancouver -- ever since prices jumped from an average of $0.80/l to $1.20/l a significant number of people (according to surveys) have started carpooling and taking transit. It's a large enough change that they have had to add extra buses during rush hour, and there has been a (slight but) noticeable decrease in congestion.

I just checked out of curiosity. In the last 6 months I have spend $140 on gas (and that includes 2 camping trips that were more then 3 hours driving away) :D
That's the advantage of being in a situation where you can commute by bike and live walking distance from a grocery store.
I really feel sorry for those people that for whatever reason have no choice but to drive.

@ 1.30 per liter, I spend $ 20 CAD of fuel per week. It only fills the tank a little over half way, but I feel I can do better.
On average @ 0.85 I used to spend only $20 CAD for 2 weeks. :)
With winter pulling in I might no have a choice, we will have to wait and see. :)

I drive an hour to work everyday. I spend right now almost $600 a month in gas. What really pisses me off is that gas got down to $1 dollar a gallon in 2001. They are producing more gas then they were in 2001 and now it is over 3 bucks. So what should only cost me $200 dollars is gas now cost $400 more. Most americans I know drive a good distance to work. At least everyone around here. Most people do not have the privlige to be within walking distance of anything except thier front yard.
There is no reason for gas to be this expenive or the price per barrel of crude to go up. Yes, I know supply and demand and that there are not enough refineries in the US, but have you heard of a gas shortage because of it? Yes we need more, but price is only going up to give the oil companies more money.
I pray for hydrogen cars to PLEASE come soon! I want to put water in my car and have it put out oxygen. The technology has exisited for year, but it would cause an economic collapse world wide. 1 in 5 people work in some way with oil and coal. If we could just move them over some how....

The Saudi foreign minister gave a wide-ranging interview today and one of his points was that in the US, it's not a matter of crude oil shortages but of refining capacity. No new refineries have been built in 20 years because of overbuilding in the 70s and early 80s. Gas prices are being kept at an artificial level because the oil companies know they can be. One would also be silly to dismiss the fact that bushco is all about oil and increasing the oil companies' profits.
My sister commutes an hour each way in a 95 Taurus and her gas bill is only about $300 a month. What are you driving?

There are, what, 600 million more people on the earth since 1998, when gas was 89¢ a gallon. And a large chunk of those people and the new economies sprouting up around them are using oil. Oil companies are price gouging and who can blame them? If you were selling organs for cash for the past 5 years, wouldn't you be asking high prices as you signed away the last chunk of liver you can part with and one of your kidneys? There's no future income for these companies.

You're in denial. We all want some miracle invention or innovation to come and save us, but like the 100mpg carburetor and cold fusion, it's merely science fiction.
There will be no hydrogen revolution. We will run out of oil and that will be the end of the automobile as we know it. Forget selling the SUV, sell your suburban house and move into the city; move to where you can walk to work and stores.
