Can I use a laptop as the monitor for a Mac Mini? If so, how?

Not really. Sorry. It'd be much easier to get a cheap Dell LCD or something. :)

impossible or prohibitively difficult/expensive. Take your pick

but it'd be all.. slow.

your best bet is a cheap screen from somewhere.

True, but it would be unnecessarily slow, not to mention slightly convoluted to set up compared to getting a new display. :)

Would VNC be too slow it they're connected through 100 T base ethernet? Not wireless? At 1024x768? With 256 colors?

When I used VNC, it was at 1440x900 millions of colors wireless, and it was very slow, but feasible... What if he did that?

100Mb ethernet != 4x AGP Bus

i was just pointing out the option.

I agree with above posts, if its your primary machine, spend a few $ on a display and enjoy the mini.

No, it's easier than that. Just buy an analog->digital converter. Use the video adapter on the mini and plug that into converter, then plug the converter into the laptop, then use something to watch the DV stream (like iChat). For just a few hundred dollars, you'd have a system that was at least 10% as good as a flat-screen LCD costing... a few hundred dollars.

Seriously: buy a monitor, or be content with pretty slow VNC speeds, esp. as you'd likely be wanting to get them connected wirelessly.
