outlook can't import iCal exported .ics files

I'm trying to "sync" my iCal at home and my Outlook at work. When I export the iCal calendars to .ics format, (which I think Outlook should be able to import), and then import into Outlook, I get messages saying that the file format is incorrect,or words to that effect.

Any hints on what I can do?
