I use a rotating desktop that changes every 15 minutes. It uses a folder I have labeled, "Aqua Desktops," I add/remove from this folder as I come across new stuff and get bored of the old.

I use random fractal images generated with Fracture, the wonderful screensaver by Stick Software (http://www.sticksoftware.com/). It creates some really nice images sometimes.
I also use other images from the net or that I made. I specially like sci-fi types :) and last, some scenes from my own retro/opengl vector graphics game :D

I take photos and artwork and modify them an little, maybe a collage of images, maybe something else. But its usually something I did myself.

There is a plug-in for iTunes called G-Force and it takes screenshots with the touch of one key. Get a collection and rotate them through the Desktop.

I find good astro pics...either real photos of nebula and galaxies and stars, or artists depictions...they can have nice, full color ;).

Ah, yeah, on my old machine at work that has two monitors (which I might use once a week) has a pair of astro pics on them, very cool stuff. www.space.com has some great backgrounds, artwork, Hubble pics, Shuttle shots of Earth, etc.

My desktops are pictures that I've taken over the time that I've had my digital camera. Some flowers, some of my cat, some trains (railfanning kicks ass, but if you don't know what it is, don't ask), and some model trains from the model railroad society I belong to.
Most of them are on my website at http://homepage.mac.com/thejll/

my desktops have been my own personal photography for months now...
aside from being proud of what I can produce...it's also fun when someone sees it and asks "is that your photo?" :D ;)

An 800x600 image (centered on my 1024x768 screen) of Legolas admiring his new bow, a gift from Galadriel, from the Extended DVD version of Fellowship of the Rings.
And, in order that the brownish edges of the graphic mate nicely to the brownish background, I hoisted the image itself into the color palatte, and click around the edge to get the proper color... Neat trick, BTW.

Stock Apple background, same blue one you see on just about every Mac on display.
Haven't bothered to download any more. Blah.
/me loves to make my own desktops. Current selection is "pain," which you can find at the bottom of this page: http://www.macronyms.com/misc/desktops.html

I do a fair amount of colour-critical work on my machine, so it's plain ol' boring grey for me. :(
