iMessage overlapping messages from different users on iPad 4

My Mom has figured out some way to break an iPad a few weeks after Christmas...

Somehow, different people's messages are all showing up at the same time and overlapping each others in iMessage. Or the text boxes are overlapping or something.

Is there some way to keep this from happening? Is there a fix for this, or does this just not happen to normal people?

I guess she figured it out. She had pushed the square button with the arrow going out. But when she pushed the name on other people, the name on the top changed, but not the messages.
