General Info last updated: May 18, 2007
After freespace 2 was considered abandonware, it became legal to download the full game. At first it was Windows only, but after the source was released to the public, it has been upgraded (to the point that one may think it is a new game) and now it runs on linux and os x!

Some people will be bored to read the instructions scattered into the thread, so I edited this first post to reflect the changes that have happened the last 1,5 year:

You need the original game content. Grab it here:
1) http://www.freespacezone.com/
2) DOWNLOAD THE INSTALLER (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html)
Notes for d/l link 1: This will give you the original game CD's in ISO format. THere are two ways to install the original game: The first is to use Virtual PC. The second, is to follow these instructions (http://s7.invisionfree.com/Apple_Corps/index.php?showtopic=263&st=0) (look at the middle of the page)
Notes for d/l link 2: This will give you a few kbytes java program that will install all the files necessary to play FS2_Open. I personally recommend that, as it will help you skip the next steps of the install process. It will also allow you to download the additional media vps content, and additional mods.

You need the FS2_Open Application (for those who don't use the java installer):
--Grab it here: (http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/osx/FS2_Open-3.6.9.dmg)

(optional)You will want the additional media vp's (installable via the installer)
These add much to the eye-candy of the game. You can download them here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,39905.0.html

(optional)You will need to check this page for command line arguments (you can skip this step if you use the installer):
This page (clicky!! (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Command-Line_Reference)) contains the command line arguments that you may want to mess around with in order to take full advantage of the FS2_Open's advanced features (in graphics and gameplay).

(Recommended)Download the FS2_Open OS X Launcher (also downloadable via the installer)
Download the OS X Launcher here (http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/jonmecos/Mainsite/Development/Objc/index.html#cmdline). It will handle all command line arguments available as of release 3.6.9. You can try it, and please send bug reports (http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/jonmecos/Mainsite/pages/cme.htm) and recommendations!

And that's it! You may play FS2:

--Interesting links:
Hard Light (http://www.hard-light.net/): In there you will find the Freespace 2 wiki with many info about the game and FS2_Open, and in the forums you will find the latest betas, final versions of FS2_Open, and much more.
Official FS2_Open website (http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php): Many downloads and information inside

--Other info:
Using the Command line:

First of all, you may want to play FS2_Open at higher resolutions than 640x480. If you want that, go into "~/Library/FS2_Open/fs2_open.ini" and open this file. In there you can modify the game's resolution and texture bits.

Since FS2_Open was released for PC, some people were gathered to enhance the textures, models and sounds of the game. So they produced new data files, which can be placed in the same directory as FS2_Open and enhance your graphics experience by also taking advantage of FS2_Open's new capabilities. These can be found at the links that I gave you above.

When you download them, you should alter the game's command line log which is in "~/Library/FS2_Open/Data/cmdline_fso.cfg". If there is no such file, then create it. A list of available configuration options is here (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Command-Line_Reference). Note that the command-line file MUST BE WRITTEN AS PLAIN TEXT FILE"!

And for those that asked me: No, I haven't been involved in the development of FS2_Open. I just like the game, I have had access to the very early betas of FS2_Open, and in the very first version of Freespace 2 for OS X (from tigital, who based the port into the icculus.org port of the game to SDL, and mtr, who got involved mainly with the networking/movies/sound). I had the time to sit back and manage to install the game despite all the difficulties at the time and I thought it would be useful for the readers to have a decent post with instructions to enjoy freespace 2.

Personnal notes:

FS2_Open for OS X was based on the icculus.org project. Then some guys named tigital and mtr got involved with it.

...if you had, you would have seen that the porting to osx was not done by mtr solely, as you state, but instead is based on the icculus.org linux port to SDL...I was the person who figured out most of the endian byteswapping, without which we didn't have models, networking, or much else...mtr had been working on bringing the fs1 experience a lot, and then helped out with more networking and sound/movie byteswapping...then he moved more into the fs2_open project, which is about where I had to stop much work on it because I needed to make money to eat and pay rent: oddly enough, not many people contribute donations to open source game developers, but everyone loves free stuff...

I'm terribly sorry that I forgot to mention tigital and that the project existed before (in cvs I think) in icculus.org. I'm also sorry that I forgot to mention that the first betas I had played were done by tigital and mtr (according to the quote above) who improved the existing icculus.org project, and were hosted at www.tigital.com. Sorry, and I hope I have cleared things up a bit...

Enjoy the game!

now how do I install the content from the 3 disks, on the Mac? Is there a way to use a windows installer in the Mac OS?

^^ What he said. I'd like to install this. Maybe you can include instructions for this very important issue in the opening post. Kind of said to find out it can't be installed after downloading 2 GB..

edit: To clarify, the install instructions are much much much to difficult for a simple guy like me. Can't figure out what to do! Guess I'll have to wait for an OS X installer. Any idea when that will be released?

Perhaps you need Virtual PC or something to install it into a directory...and then bring the files over from there? Unfortunately I have neither a PC, or Virtual PC, so I don't know how I'm supposed to do the install.

Oh well, sounds like a great game, and I'm sure the guys worked hard to port to the Mac. Too bad these 3 cd's will function as coasters for the time being.

I am working on a GUI installer to get all of the files off of the original discs. It should be easy enough for everyone to use. I'll try and get that done this weekend and post a link here.

If you can't wait (and can figure out how to use it) you can grab unshield (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/unshield-bin.tar.gz) and extract the VP files from "data1.cab" on the first disc. You should be able to copy the rest of the .vp and .mve files from the other two discs. Just make a directory somewhere for the game on you hard drive and put all of the files in there.

So...what is it? A space shooter you say? Is it good? I remember I downloaded the Marathon games, and those were great. I forgot to save them when I reformated.

Anyone got a link to those by any chance?

Freespace 2 is a space combat sim and though it doesn't really aim to be realistic in the "sim" sense it is extremely fun and very addictive.

There are two different projects for FS2 (just to make things extra confusing ;)), the icculus.org project and SCP (Source Code Project). The icculus.org version has support for the original FS1 plus the Silent Threat add-on and of course the original FS2. The icculus.org version is a "port" so it doesn't really add anything over the original Windows release except for bug fixes.

You can get FS1 and FS2 binary releases of the icculus.org version from www.tigital.com or just go to http://icculus.org/freespace2 and get instructions on how to get at the code in CVS. There are no forums for the icculus.org version so just use the one on Inside Mac Games or start something here.

SCP makes FS2_Open which has many new features and graphics capabilities over the original Windows retail version. Hardware requirements are quite a bit higher with FS2_Open but if you can handle the specs then it's certainly worth it. If you are interested in the changes that have been made graphically then you might want to take a look here: http://fs2source.warpcore.org/wmcscreenies/index.php

Soulstorm has a direct link in his first post to the FS2_Open binary release for OS X. Forums are here (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=50) and have a special section for cross-platform development things (Linux, OS X). And the official website is http://scp.indiegames.us though that is mostly Windows stuff.
I'm "taylor" on those forums.

I used to play Freespace back in the day. That was a great game! I never tried FS2, but am really excited to try it now.

I am downloading as I type, but if someone could post detailed install instructions I think we would all appreciate it. I have a feeling I may have some issues. ;)

I need the original discs in front of me to detail unshield's use so I can't give any sort of detailed instructions at the moment. Doesn't really matter though, the GUI installer will be released in about 2 days. Then you won't have to worry about it. If you can't figure out unshield then just hold on a little bit longer and you'll be able to use a simple installer.

It was originally released in '99. But of course the point of FS2_Open is to push it far beyond that original release.

We are talking about going from this:

Go to the control configuration screen in game and select the control axis you want to invert (mouse controls are the same as joystick axis controls) and click the invert button.

Mouse sensitivity doesn't work that great but I'm working on a fix to replace that particular part of the code that will be more appropriate in a cross-platform world.

Oooh, just realized there is a(nother) bug in Volition's original control config code. You can't use the mouse to set an axis, you have to use the joystick. Obviously this is a rather large problem if you don't have a joystick attached to the system. If you have a joystick then use it to set the axis, it will apply to the mouse as well. Is this the problem you are seeing or is it something else?

The bug is now fixed but it will only be in CVS builds which I don't recommend right now. If you don't have, and can't get, a joystick then let me know and I'll get you a special (non-CVS) build with the fix in it.

Just look somewhere at the middle of the page, the guy gives specific instructions on how to install the game in OS X.

Also, I want to mention that you can download the hi-res artwork and other media files which add lightmaps and better sounds to the game in the official SCP website (http://scp.indiegames.us/news.php)...

So grab them and alter the FS2 experience!

I'm as confused as you guys are, but I did manage to get somewhere.

After examining the syntax in terminal, I figured out how to extract the files from data1.cab on the first disk image using unshield. Its actually not that hard. Here are some step by step instructions if anyone is interested:

First startup terminal

then copy the directory of the unshield file (apple C) and paste it (apple V) into terminal.

Type x into terminal, then space. So at this point you should have a directory, and the letter x in terminal with a space before and after the x.

Then go and do the same copy-paste to the data1.cab file. The final command should look something like this:

/Users/erendiox/Desktop/Freespace2Folder/unshield-bin/unshield x /Volumes/Freespace2_1/data1.cab

or basically directory x directory

Terminal will then proceed to extract the files using unshield. The files ended up in my home folder so I assume it would do the same to everyone else. Trouble is, even after taking the vp files that were extracted and putting them together with the vp files and the MVE files from the other disk images, nothing seems to work! :(

Sorry I can't help any firther. I just figured i'd let you all know what i'd figured out so far. If I manage to get anything else figured out i'll be sure to let you all know.

Edit: Ah. GUI is good :p. Going to try those instructions.

I forgot to mention that in the link for the instructions I gave you, THERE IS A PROGRAM THAT DOES THE SAME THING AS UNSHIELD but with a GUI! (sorry for the caps, I wanted everybody to notice it!).

It's called File Juicer (http://echoone.com/FileJuicer/FileJuicer.html)

That should help you extract the files from these .cab files. I used this program to install my copy of FS2. then just follow the instructions from the forum link I gave you...

No need for unshield, File Juicer has a comprehensive GUI.

The MVEs won't play on OS X.

For the movies, http://web.engr.oregonstate.edu/~plankerj/fs2movies/

Anyway, it was pretty easy to get working. Just extract the cab file, and then grab all the .vp files off all the discs, and put all the files together in one directory, with the fs2_open executable, and it should run (without movies, until you download them from the link)

mtr
Oct 9, 2005, 03:42 PM
The MVEs won't play on OS X.
MVE is the only movie supported actually, it can't play the AVI versions. MVEs will work only on the Linux and OS X versions of FS2_Open right now. The only trick to getting MVE working is to put them in "data/movies" and have the filenames lowercase.

It's been reported that the intro movie will play but be black however I think this is fixed if you use the MediaVPs (at least mv_core.vp) since it works ok for me in that configuration. A proper fix for that will show up in public builds soon.

AVI support is coming but not fully working yet since the new code is meant to be used on all platforms and replace the current Windows only movie code.

And per the instructions on the link that Soulstorm provided I just wanted to mention that you don't have to create a full set of directories. If you want to use movies then you just have to create "data/movies" and the rest will be created automatically as needed by the game. Also the "FPS at 120 = slowdown" bug was fixed in the official version so you can ignore that. (The build linked in that post is not official and not supported by anyone except the person that made it).

They will. Just name them to lowercase and they're fine. I play them with no problem.

It's the .avi's that cannot be played. The original game files will play without problem.

As for the black intro screen that mtr is talking about, just download the media.vp enhancements and it will be fine.

Yep, that's too old to play FS2_Open. You do still have the option of using the icculus.org version of Freespace 2 (download from http://www.tigital.com) if you want. It doesn't have all of the cool features for supporting mods or the enhanced graphics capabilities that FS2_Open has, it's just a port of the original Windows release to OS X, but it should run on your hardware.

I'm working on an installer which will just be point and click and simple to use. I'm not making as much progress as I thought though. But that's probably because I'm making an installer that works on every platform supported by the game. If I don't make serious progress tonight, I'll go ahead and release a script that will do all of the work and you'll just have to do what it tells you.

Crap! Someone said it but I didn't believe them, I forgot to include SDL inside the APP! The original 3.6.7 release had it but then I updated it and forgot the second time.

Oh well, guess I'll have to update the packages with SDL included. In the meantime you can just download http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.9.dmg and then mount it and drag "SDL.framework" into "/Library/Frameworks/". That should fix the problem.

Oh well, guess I'll have to update the packages with SDL included. In the meantime you can just download http://www.libsdl.org/release/SDL-1.2.9.dmg and then mount it and drag "SDL.framework" into "/Library/Frameworks/". That should fix the problem.

Yeah, I think I have the same. Makes me wonder if I screwed up installation. I think when we get the GUI installer I will start over just to be safe.

BTW: Despite my problems, this game is lots of fun! I am having a blast. :D

I updated the original packages to include SDL so just download it again and you should be fine (http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/releases/FS2_Open-3.6.7.dmg).

I installed it using VPC and i installed the SDL thing. But when i start FS2 open it does run but the screen goes black and it crash.... Btw my freespace folder is 572,2 MB big. Can anyone help?
That usually happens when you run the game without the data files in the same directory. Make sure that you have the .vp files in the same directory as the app and that the .vp files are all lower case. If that doesn't help then please run "FS2_Open-debug" and after it crashes post the last 15 lines of ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/fs2_open.log (with "~" being your home directory).

Unfortunately the German and QWERTY keyboard layouts are the only ones that work properly. The game doesn't really lend itself that well to supporting different layouts but I'll make sure that's on my todo list for the future.

As far as the game looking like retail, it's supposed to do that. By default it's setup to act like the retail version. If you install the MediaVPs and use the proper cmdline options (in the README file) then all of the extra graphics features and hi-poly models will get used. I'll post instructions on how to get and use the MediaVPs with the installation info. It's not difficult but they are tailored to the Windows crowd and if you are new to this whole thing then it's all pretty confusing at first.

I still have this game for Windows, and I'd love to play it on my Mac, but the installation instructions are pretty scattered.
I'll post a link to detailed, step-by-step instructions in 5-6 hours which will have all of the links to the files, installation instructions from the orginal discs and a FAQ.

(are u the person responsible for porting this game to osx?)
I handle all cross-platform work for SCP and TBP. So basically, yes. The OS X port of FS2_Open was originally based on work done by tigital for the icculus.org version. Only one section of code is actually the same as what tigital did now but he still gets credit for doing it in the first place.

Finally got mine installed. Man, this program CRASHES all of the time! I usually only get one level in before the whole thing shuts down.
It's pretty stable most of the time actually. That's not to say that there aren't issues of course. Post your crash log (~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/FS2_Open.crash.log) some where that I can look at it and I'll see if I can't figure out what the problem is.

Well, ive been playing for a while now - and im loving it. I've tried to install the high res-vp packages (put them in my freespace game folder next to the binary - created a (HOME)/Lib/FS2_OPEN/data/cmdline_fso.cfg with ' -glow -spec -jpgtga -pcx32 -ambient_factor -rlm -loadonlyused -fps ' in it) However i dont think they are working.. the game looks great but im not getting a 'fps' counter and the models looks the same .. so im probably doing somethign wrong ;)

It is nice playing a game at 1280x1024 on my powerbook though :D

I have installed the game and have downloaded all media packs (not just the models, but also the hires effects and textures). My graphics were completely altered. Try this configuration into the command line:

-no_fps_capping -glow -spec -rlm -dualscanlines -2d_poof -loadonlyused -ambient_factor 83 -jpgtga -nobeampierce -targetinfo -fps -allslev

I use that. Note that in this release, bump mapping and realistic shadows have been disabled because they had some problems. But that doesn't mean that the media packs found in the official SCP homepage do not improve the lighting of the game. The textures should load just fine, just use the configuration I give you and post any problems here, if you have any...

I think it's a great port... as soon as mtr has finished the installer, the thing will be complete for everyone to enjoy. I will alter my original post in this thread to have all the new information, so that new visitors can see the progress without having to read all these posts.

EDIT: Look at my first post on this thread: I have updated it with more information which I think will clear things up a bit

You don't have to do that. That is expected. If you want to eliminate this problem, just download the media enhancements, found in the SCP hopepage in the downloads section (look for a link in my first post).

The problem resides in a bad logo at the start of the game, and since with the media enhancement the logo is replaced, mtr thought there wasn't going to be any problems.

Relax, that doesn't mean that you can't watch the intro movie. just go to the tech room and select it to see it. It will play just fine.

how does one bring up the command line? Ive checked the /user/library/FS2_sourc/data/ for the command line file but one does not seem to exist. Mabe permissions kept the program from building one i do not know. (thogh that seems likely.) If some one could send a command line file to my email adress herecomethej@sbcglobal.net that would be very helpful.

Actually, the command line file will be created by you. Read the Read-me in the FS2_Open release. Check what you will create and how will you write the commands.

The command line is nothing more than a plain text file in the "~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg" location.

To see the available commands, check my first post on this thread for additional links.

EDIT:I modified my first post to answer even more questions, so that people don't search the entire thread to find it.

FS2_Open for OS X was based on the icculus.org project. Then some guys named tigital and mtr got involved with it. I didn't mention that in my first post, and it was entirely wrong to emphasize on one person only. So, according to tigital (in another forum)

...if you had, you would have seen that the porting to osx was not done by mtr solely, as you state, but instead is based on the icculus.org linux port to SDL...I was the person who figured out most of the endian byteswapping, without which we didn't have models, networking, or much else...mtr had been working on bringing the fs1 experience a lot, and then helped out with more networking and sound/movie byteswapping...then he moved more into the fs2_open project, which is about where I had to stop much work on it because I needed to make money to eat and pay rent: oddly enough, not many people contribute donations to open source game developers, but everyone loves free stuff...

I'm terribly sorry that I forgot to mention tigital and that the project existed before (in cvs I think) in icculus.org. I'm also sorry that I forgot to mention that the first betas I had played were done by both (according to what he said), who worked based on the linux sdl port, and were hosted at www.tigital.com. Sorry, and I hope I have cleared things up a bit...

Im betting that im kinda getting anoying to all you people who really know your way around a computer so just a couple more questions.

1.will this ever be released in a simple download double click and install set up? (like americas army and every other game I can think of)

2.If not could I maybe get a basic list of instructions on how to install, without computer jargon if possible.

Hate to be a bother but this game looks pretty cool and you cant beat the price if theres a double click and hit next next next install coming out in a month or two then ill just wait.

Installation Instructions: Mac OS X

1. Download all 3 disc images from http://freespacezone.com/. They are compressed as .RAR files, extract them wherever you want.

2. Rename the 3 disc images with the extension .BIN instead of .ISO; they were mislabeled.

3. Download Bin2ISO (linked to earlier in this thread). This is a command line utility. Run the program on all 3 .BIN images. After all 3 images have finished being converted, you can delete the .BIN versions. The syntax for running it is:

sudo chmod 777 /(path to)/bin2iso (this only has to be done the first time)

/(path to)/bin2iso (path to .BIN image) (path to where you want the .ISO image to be)

3. Create the Freespace2 directory structure. It goes as follows (these are folders):
CODE

Freespace2
data
cbanims
effects
fonts
force feedback
freddocs
hud
intelanims
interface
maps
missions
models
movies
multidata
music
players
images
multi
single
squads
sounds
tables
voice

4. Download File Juicer (http://echoone.com/FileJuicer/FileJuicer.html) and drag the app to your Applications folder.

5. Launch File Juicer and mount the first ISO image. Drag the file "data1.cab" onto the File Juicer window and let File Juicer finish extracting stuff from the file.

6. Open the folder (on your desktop) called "Data1 Juice". You can delete the Executables folder. Move all ".vp" files you find to the "Freespace2" folder. The contents of "Hud_Config_Files" go in the "players" folder, and the contents of "Data_Directory_Files" go in the "data" folder. The contents of "Fred_Docs" are not essential, but they can be moved to the "freddocs" folder if you wish.

7. Mount the other two ISO images. These two images have the uncompressed data on them, so you don't need File Juicer.

8. Move all ".vp" files except "warble_fs2.vp" (for some reason this one's on all three discs) from the images to the "Freespace2" folder. Move all ".MVE" files to the "movies" folder and rename them to their lowercase equivalents.

9. Download the Freespace2 application (http://www.evula.org/tnjo/freespace2.zip). Put the two files from this in the "Freespace2" folder. You may wish to tweak the .ini file, but it should give you good performance the way it is right now.

10. Let 'er rip.

A quick note is that you may notice that the game appears to slow down alot as soon as the FPS hits 120. That's the game's framerate cap but it's my theory that the engine keeps going past that point (aka generates frames at more than 120 fps) but then drags the gamespeed down to keep them displaying at 120. I'll try to hack out the framerate cap, but for now just keep the details at maximum and it should stay below 120 most of the time.

Another quick note: Joystick HIGHLY recommended!!!!!! The game plays fine without it, but if you have one USE IT! (Lotsa buttons = good thing)

To MTR and Verto:

If you do end up making an OS X fileset distro which includes either a script, GUI installer (Packagemaker?), or a detailed FAQ for a manual install using only the distro, I would be happy to mirror the download over at www.macologist.org 's download page. PM me here for details.

So did a graphic installer come out yet?
No, unfortunately. I got ambitious again and decided to make a full-blown installer than can handle the CD-ROM files, download and install MediaVPs, and handle updating. I've been extremely busy lately with work and fixing major bugs in FS2_Open so that CVS is usable again. I'll get back to it as soon as I can.

These instructions are really overly complex. Why don't the developers just put this thing together right? Is it really that hard to put together a Mac Application, or to even just put all the necessary files into a single image so it's easy to mount and get started?
It is together right. The game data files aren't included with the APP because they can't be for legal reasons. The MediaVPs aren't needed and if you can't figure out how download and copy them to the right place then someone else will have to come up with better instructions since I can't think that basic. The instructions are overly complex but as has already been mentioned, most of that is not needed.

The individual VPs from the original CD ISOs can be downloaded from a FTP site. It's a conflict of interest for me to list that URL but it has already been posted in this thread if I'm not mistaken. You don't need an installer for them, just download, uncompress from RAR/ZIP (whichever it is), and copy the .vp files to the same directory as the FS2_Open APP. That's it.

Also it's not "developers" it's just one developer, me. "Me" works on all of the three major operating systems totalling 7 achitectures, both the SCP and icculus.org code bases, the TBP mod for cross-platform support, and owns a business which takes up most of "Me's" time. "Me" has also actually own a Mac for 2 months and before that borrowed/stole one when "me" could get away with it which wasn't often and means that 90% of all development was done blind. If you can do a better job than "Me" for the OS X version then are welcome to it. Otherwise, shut up. :p :D

If you do end up making an OS X fileset distro which includes either a script, GUI installer (Packagemaker?), or a detailed FAQ for a manual install using only the distro, I would be happy to mirror the download over at www.macologist.org 's download page. PM me here for details.
When it was obvious that a true installer was going to take more time than I could give I looked at the PackageMaker route but I don't know enough about the internals to actually get anything working. My next thought was for a detailed FAQ with step-by-step instructions and a simple command line program for installing the files off of the original CDs. Unfortunately I haven't had the time available to me to do that either. If you already own the CDs though then there is no legal issue to getting the single VPs off of the FTP site. The problem with me telling people that is that I am a developer on the project and I can't so obviously support copyright infringement or I'd quickly get on the bad side of Volition. I would be happy to assist anyone who would like to make available such instructions however.

As soon as I do have the full installer for FS2_Open which will be used on all of the platforms then I'll let you know.

mtr, I apologize for coming off so critical in that last post. I wasn't aware of the legal issues, which surely complicate things. Ugh. I also come from a development background, and try to take care that software I produce isn't a pain to install. After using Linux for about five years, part of the reason I moved to Mac was so I didn't have to spend a lot of time screwing with my OS and applications to make them work. It's a just a peeve to me that even on Linux, a lot of times I can just run apt-get (Debian) or emerge (Gentoo) and have something install, and for games I want to run on my Mac, especially FOSS ones, I have to jump through a bunch of hoops that involve installing other programs I don't otherwise need, moving files, renaming files, etc.

Again, I apologize for jumping on your back. :) Developing 7 different builds would be a pain, and I understand that it's just a hobby project.

On a different note, I think a fairly simple bash or perl script might simplify this process a bit, and not take too long for you to put together. For any legal downloads, you could just have the script pop open an instance of safari at each download web page, and have the user do the installation. Just a suggestion. :)

I had the idea to install the program and then try to put together an easy(ier)-to-install App package, but my wife convinced me that I have my own hobby projects to spend time on. :) Also, I didn't realize the crappy legal implications. It's too bad the company won't release this old software to the community. I may have to see about trying to find an old copy of this game, since it sounds like fun.

Not a problem. I tried to be a little funny with my response so you wouldn't feel too bad. ;)

Installation is an issue for Windows and Linux as well and it's a problem for everyone involved. Everyone involved with SCP gets asked on a weekly basis how to install everything and to explain what it what and do you use recent builds or release builds and which MediaVPs do you use, etc. I get it a little worse since I get that question on every single platform. Needless to say it gets on my last nerve every once and a while. No matter the platform you really have to be up on everything involved with FS2_Open to understand what files you need and where all to put them. That's why I decided to just go ahead and take the time to make a complete, easy to use, cross-platform installer. It's going to take time to get done and tested and get all of the other developers and certain others in the community on board with the final product. Everyone has to suffer in the meantime but it will pay off in the end.

On a different note, I think a fairly simple bash or perl script might simplify this process a bit, and not take too long for you to put together. For any legal downloads, you could just have the script pop open an instance of safari at each download web page, and have the user do the installation. Just a suggestion. :)
The problem with that (and the main reason I haven't done it already) are the hosting problems given the amount of server space needed and the bandwidth requirements not to mention the possible legal issues of putting it up for download. For this reason they don't like the direct links to get out of the community and tend to change download locations when they do get out. Writing the script would be easy, maintaining and constantly supporting it isn't something I'm willing to spend time on though.

I had the idea to install the program and then try to put together an easy(ier)-to-install App package, but my wife convinced me that I have my own hobby projects to spend time on. :) Also, I didn't realize the crappy legal implications. It will get easier with time and as we get the various platform support worked out. Even Linux support didn't hit CVS until earlier this year, after 2 years of work on it. Nearly every utility and installer is for Windows so it's just taking time to get more people used to the idea of multi-platform. I've gotten some of the other developers working some with Linux and a couple of others are playing around with OS X so the situation is getting better. Various new tools for working with models and artwork and VPs are getting written with cross-platform in mind from the start. The Freespace community is historically a Windows group, even some of the original game developers at Volition thought Linux support was a bad idea. They have since changed their tune but it's still an uphill battle sometimes.

Also remember that I've really only been using a Mac on a regular basis for nearly 2 months. I have a big *nix background so getting me used to the Mac way of doing things takes time as well. Hell, it was a major thing for me to create a DMG for the first time instead of just uploading a tarball of the APP. :)

As far as the company releasing the game goes, it's not their fault. They released the source code for the engine (though missing several things that they didn't own the rights to) and the data is copyright to them. The problem is that they don't have distribution rights to it anymore so that can't give it away. This is why it's almost impossible to find for sale too, the publisher just stopped shipping it. I'm not even sure if anyone actually knows who owns the rights to it at this point but it's deffinitely not the great people who originally created the game.

The instructions may be a little complicated, but installation isn't as hard as it seems. I remember the first time I tried to install the game. It was a pain in the ass, but the result was actually worth it, plus, I noticed that in fact, it was simple.

I tried to give the most useful links to you, and the bottom line is this:

You need FS2_open to run the game, and its data files. Extract the data files using file juicer into an FS2_open directory and put the application in it. Open the application, and the game should be just fine.

There is a confusion about the media.vp files. Note that these files are NOT required to run. They just add some eye-candy that I personally think its awesome (compared to the original release).

The settings in the command line file, should only be tapped when you want to optimize the game to run in your machine, or to use the media.vp's and FS2_Open's new capabilities.

It just needs a little time to get things running properly, but when you do that, you'll see that it wasn't that hard... :)

Say if you wanted to enable specular maps, glow maps, an ambient factor of 80, and JPG and TGA textures then you would open Terminal app type this:
echo "-spec -glow -ambient_factor 80 -jpgtga" > ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline.cfg
If you already have that file in place then you can open it in TextEdit and add the options you want there. Note that the options I listed won't matter unless you have the MediaVPs installed. If you have questions on how to install the MediaVPs just let me know.

when i copied pasted in your command into the counsole it created a file called cmdline.cfg instead of the preposed cmdline_fso.cmd file that you wrote in your readme. I think the extra vp files are all working but its hard to tell. for instance i did not enter in the command to have a 3d radar yet i have it anyway. and like to turn it off. and also durring one of the missions it the program keeps quiting mid flight. I knoticed that it was durring a battle so what i deduced that the problem might be is that the -load only used weapons command is on, despite the fact that i did not enter it in. and one of the fighters is launching a missle that isnt loaded up. though i could be wrong..

EDIT: I created a file entiled cmdline_fso.cmd to make sure that that was what the file should be called. and I entered the following commands exactly in this fashion on the first line.

-nosound -nomusic

the weird thing is, and this is where my entire problem started, was that the program seems to ignore the cmdline_fso.cmd file that i created. all sound plays normaly and ontop of that all the extra vp. files work fine despite the fact that i did not enter in the proper commands to make them work. And finaly i still get the 3d radar.

The file has to have a .cfg extension so be sure to check that since you keep writing .cmd. The "cmdline.cfg" thing I wrote was just my fault, but it will check for that file if "cmdline_fso.cfg" is missing so it should still get any options specified there.

If you use the options I listed and use the MediaVPs then you should notice an immediate difference in the visual quality. Something just sounds wrong with your setup considering all of your problems. Can you please post a list of the files that are in the same folder as the FS2_Open app and a listing of the files in ~/Library/FS2_Open and ~/Library/FS2_Open/data? That might help me figure out what's wrong.

Oh and I just recently found a bug with -nosound which would cause random crashing in a mission so I suggest not using that until a CVS bugfix build is released.

Yah, i labeled .cfg on the actual file. EDIT: I FOUND THE CULPRATE!
there was another cmdline_fso.cfg in the data in the freespace folder. if you hadnt asked for a list of all the files that i had then i wouldnt have noticed. that had all the commands that i thought it was using including that 3dradar one

-spec -glow -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3dmipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -cell -rlm -orbradar -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -snd_preload -env -alpha_env -decals

I knoticed that cell should not be on when using the mediavps so ill get rid of that. anything else

thing is that this file is in the wrong folder and yet it seems to take precedence over the one that is in the right folder. very odd...

ok, i had edited that cfg file instead of the one in the library folder. and now evreything works perfectly. I even had the game preload the files like you suggested in the readme and that shortened the load time considearbly. so Thanks for your help

Glad to hear it's working for you now.

It does support a cmdline_fso.cfg file in both places and will use options in both but there is an order to which option values get used. For instance, if you specify an -ambient_factor value in both files then only the one in ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg will get used. Different options in the two files will just be added together though so you can specify -jpgtga in one and -loadonlyused in the other and both will get used.

All options are combined from all of the locations with the most recent value for a particular option getting used. This read order goes like this:

3) <game_directory>/data/cmdline_fso.cfg
2a) ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg
2b) ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline.cfg (only if above cmdline_fso.cfg isn't found!)
1) what was actually specified on the command line when run from the shell

That load order allows you to do some nice things with mod support and what not, which I'll detail at a later time (using it for TBP). Windows users don't have the option of doing this so they still have to do a bit more work to support the total conversion mods (like TBP, Inferno and WC:Saga).

hello and greetings to all from New Zealand!

I had never heard of the game freespace until I stumbled across this thread. It sounds quite exciting.

Trying to follow the instructions provided here as closely as possible I have downloaded disk 1, 2, 3 and the FS2_Open application.

Thus, I am fairly certain that I have all the necessary components to put together the game for OS X .

I began to follow the installation instructions. However, the discs are in a zip format, not rar as is referred to in the instructions.

When I tried to open them, using stuffit expander the the process begins and then stops.

For some reason, I am unable to open the game disks and thus at this stage, cannot precede with installation.

If anybody could shed any light on why I am unable to unzip the discs, I would be extremely grateful.

Kind regards,

David:)

An installer is in the works but it doesn't have the priority of other things right now. Anyone is free to make easier to understand installation instructions however. I have tried but with my big Linux/UNIX background I can't seem to explain it in way that makes much sense for most OS X users. My latest attempt at instructions for installing, by hand, the game from the original discs is contained in a readme file in the unshield binary I made available: http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/misc/unshield-bin.tar.gz

The instructions still require use of the Terminal and all of the typing that involves but it's about the best I've been able to come up with so far. Anything else I do seems to be too complicated for many. The installer is very special and not just for installing the game under OS X but a complete installing, downloading, updating, patching system for SCP and the mods based on FS2_Open. It's going to take time to get all working and I'm not going to half-ass something in the meantime for those who don't understand the current instructions.

If someone else wants to make an installer just for installing the files off of the CD-ROMs then I'll make sure that it gets listed with all FS2_Open OS X info and that it gets added to the 3.6.7 dmg. Coming from me however, the new installer system will have to wait until it's done and there is no timeframe for when that may be.

By default you can't use the mouse to fly the ship. You can turn that on in the options screen though. I think it's just listed as "Mouse" with and on and an off setting. You can change that at any time and it takes affect immediately so you could turn it on while you are playing (F2 brings up the options screen when in a mission) if you wanted.

Thanks! The mouse works just fine now. And whoever recommended a joystick for this game is absolutely right. Still, this looks to be quite a cool game! What a sense of scale!

I'm looking at the graphics enhancements. Which ones should I download and install? I see there's several, from Lightspeed and others for example.

Just stick to the MediaVPs at first (can be downloaded from http://scp.indiegames.us) since they are about the only thing that's officially supported. Everyone's best work ends up in the MediaVPs so you will find all of the cool stuff from Lightspeed and DaBrain as well plus the hi-poly models from the many skilled model makers out there.

A HOWTO is in the works which explains what everything is and how to make use of the MediaVPs. I'll post a link to it here when it becomes available (someone else is writing it).

EDIT:

So should I go with these instructions (http://s7.invisionfree.com/Apple_Corps/index.php?showtopic=263&st=0)? The ones that say..

The syntax for running it is:

cd into the Desktop directory to make life easier (use the ls and cd commands to find your way). Remember that ./ means from the directlry you're on, while / is from the root directory.

Anyway, just cd to Desktop, then put in the commands as shown in the instructions.

Or in other words... Use those.

(When you first start a shell (start up Terminal), you should already be in your home folder. To go to your Desktop, simply type in "cd ./Desktop".

./bin2iso ./(name of the first .bin file... to save typing, just press TAB for it to autocomplete for you.)

Wait for it to finish, then

./bin2iso ./(name of second .bin image... again, use TAB to make the typing easier.)

Wait a bit. And then you're done.

When I run FileJuicer on the first mount, everything seems to be working for a while, then it says how FileJuicer had to close, etc. When I check out data1 Juice, it contains a jpg folder and a txt folder.

The jpg folder contains data1 part 2 of 4.jpg

The txt folder contains data1 part 1 of 4(1%copy)-1.txt and then part 2 of 4 of that same filename.

There is also an extractlog.txt, which is empty.

EDIT: Looking at the OS X Installation instructions thread, it seems someone else had the identical problem, although they said they solved it by downloading a newer version, which I already have (3.9.5). I'll try downloading and installing FileJuicer again, but it's quit "unexpectedly" 3 times in a row, about 3/4 of the way done. I checked the file size of my data1.cab file and it matched exactly with the one the guy listed in his instructions, so I'm not sure what is wrong.

Go to this (http://s7.invisionfree.com/Apple_Corps/index.php?showtopic=263&st=0) page. Scroll about 1/4-1/2 down; someone posts a link to a bin2iso download, which when clicked will load in Terminal. It should not be an .exe file.

I deleted by the disc1.iso and started over from the original .zip that I'd downloaded. I guess I had improperly used bin2iso because now FileJuicer seems to be working with it. I may need to redo the disc2 and 3 .bins to make sure they were done right.

OK, I could use some help with this part:

First of all, you may want to play FS2_Open at higher resolutions than 640x480. If you want that, go into "~/Library/FS2_Open/fs2_open.ini" and open this file. In there you can modify the game's resolution and texture bits.

I got FS2 Open 3.6.7 installed, and was able to open it up, but I couldn't figure out how to get to the file mentioned so I could raise the resolution.

And

Since FS2_Open was released for PC, some people were gathered to enhance the textures, models and sounds of the game. So they produced new data files, which can be placed in the same directory as FS2_Open and enhance your graphics experience by also taking advantage of FS2_Open's new capabilities. These can be found at the official SCP homepage, in the downloads section.

When you download them, you must alter the game's command line log which is in "~/Library/FS2_Open/Data/cmdline_fso.cfg". If there is no such file, then create it. A list of available configuration options is in the release's read-me and here:

http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugin...stallation.php

in this link you will find instructions about how to install the game n PC (which you don't need) and the command-line information is at the bottom of the page. This is what you need to play the game

I'm going to assume you have all the .bin and bin2iso files on your Desktop. If not, I would suggest you move them there, it made things easier for me.

Open up terminal and try to type this again:

cd ./desktop

./bin2iso ./name of first .bin file
./bin2iso ./name of second .bin

You might also try downloading the bin2iso file again and double clicking on it to let it start, then going up to the Finder and opening a new Terminal shell (at least that's what I remember doing)

Hi, I am [DW]-Hunter a member of the Darkwing clan http://www.darkwing.org.uk I am the owner of freespacezone, although im a pc man i can help you with a few things if you need to, if you need to download a PRE-Installed version of freespace 2, ill compress it and upload it to my mirror and send you the link. I have fixed the misslabled ISO files on freespacezone, they are properly labled BIN on mirror 1, i also want you guys to know that my mirror 1 has a 100MBps upload (your download) so if you need it quick, freespacezone is the way to go ;) Anyways i see you guys really admire freespace. I never did relize that freespace COULD run on a mac, its a strictly C++ windows oriented game. I would think you would need a well programmed windows emulator to run it (something that doesnt even exist anyways). I have unlimited webspace as well, you need some hosting of something freespace oriented, contact me and ill host it. I also host freelancer stuff as well, if any of u play on pc and play freelancer, its not the best flight sim, but its popular on multiplayer, and my clan now has its own server on there, modded and everything. If your interested in multiplayer, you will find me on there, i am admiral khafe on there and for all of you that want the original multiplayer, from the original freespace build, pxo will be back shortly, my clan administrator is incharge of that programming area for the freespace project. ([DW]-Orlanith). I'm also comming out with a few missions of mine for multiplayer, you guys might really enjoy them, they are action packed and difficult to win, just the way i like it. You want skill for freespace, multi is the way to go, all missions are difficult, and you can only play on medium + if you want the medals and MAX points play on insane, yes i know now it sound like its imposible, but it isnt that hard, by myself i can get just about all the medals, but keep in mind im a 6 year vetteran of freespace, and i get about 60 kills + on average per mission. and yes there is THAT much killing in multi, they are big battles, no where near as potent as the freespace campaign, in my view, the campaign is just training for multi, so i recommend finishing the campaign before you join me and my buddys in space. Hope you guys find this information helpful.

And it works fine!

@mtr: Does Freespace2_Open supports Force Feedback?

So, can anybody help me out here?

Hi All!

well, Getting Freespace 2 up and running is still an ongoing process for me. I have left it alone for a week or so, to get some other stuff done.

I have had the 3 disc images, converted from iso to bin, got the bin2iso utility for the Terminal. When l have tried to convert the bin files, l receive an image but when double -clicked, l received an error message "disk not mountable. That is where i was at last week. I had another try today and l have had success with Disk 2!
However Disc 1 & 3, still do not work.

Do l need to download Disks 1 & 3 again?, It will be the third time l have done so, perhaps I am having a streak of corrupt files.

It is encouraging to see that many are having success!

If re-download is necessary, where are the solid files to be found?

Cheers,

Yes. I haven't had time to really work on the actual installer but I'm going to release a temporary one soon (probably later this weekend). It will either be the Carbon version of Loki Setup, or the installer that we will likely use for TBP in order to get a real world test of it out of the way. I'll update everyone here when it's available.

@mtr: Does Freespace2_Open supports Force Feedback?
No, but I consider that a rather important issue on my todo list. The Windows version supports FF of course and that was a major part of the appeal of the FreeSpace series for me. A couple of years ago I coded in FF support for Linux but the API was pretty much a moving target and I just could never get it working properly. Interest has been shown in that again recently though so I may go back and clean up that code.

OS X has a much better API but unfortunately my joystick isn't supported (it's old so I wasn't surprised). FF support for OS X is coming but I don't know when. I will probably start coding on it later this month but I don't know how long it will take to finish. I am familiar with the Freespace side of the code and know what's needed, I just need to figure out what all I'll have to code for OS X. When it gets released is another question though since without a joystick to use with it myself I won't be able to test or troubleshoot the code. If I can convince myself to get a new FF joystick that would greatly accelerate the process but I doubt I'll go out buying that until after Christmas. Releasing untested code isn't something that I like to do, but if the coding goes smoothly I just may release a public test version and work out any bugs from there.

I see the files there, they are in rar format, will this be a problem on my mac?
StuffIt Expander should handle them fine.

I've converted everything into a format that should be easier for OS X users.

All you have to do is download and copy it to your Applications folder (or anywhere else on your computer that you deem appropriate) and double-click!

Just keep all of the files together.

Head over to http://freespace2.bluehome.net/

Please help to conserve bandwidth: Once your download is finished, leave your BitTorrent window open and remain seeding. :)

Thankyou for that!

You're welcome.

There is no action with the BT at the moment O seeds in 0 peers after an hour.

I am currently seeding to 4 peers. If you're behind a NAT or firewall or router, try opening up the ports that BitTorrent is listening to (or placing your machine in the DMZ.)

OK; sure. How are you connected to the internet? What is plugged into what? Are you using a router or anything? If so, what is the make & model? Describe your internet setup with as much info & detail as possible. :)

And, if you're using OS X's built-in firewall (located in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall), turn it off.

Hi again!

thank you for being prepared to help. I will try to describe my setup as best l can:

I believe l have a Broadband connection. I connect using a Nokia DSL modem (router?)

In System Preferences -> Network->Network status, It says:
"Built-in Ethernet is currently active and has the IP address: 192.168.1.3. you are currently connected to the Internet via built-in Ethernet"

when I go to the show built-in Ethernet screen, under the TCP/IP tab it shows:

Hi, unfortunately l cant get at it myself just now. I am in a wheelchair and it is not somewhere l can reach. Either l can wait till my partner gets home from work and she could have a look, or I went to the Nokia Website and going by the photographs they have, it is either a M1122 or MW1122.

Is this close enough or do you want me to check it out when I have some help?

OK; That helped.

Check out http://dsl.nokia.co.nz/

Grab the manual - it looks like both models are sufficently similar. Info seems start around page 40.

Forward ports 6881 - 6889 (the manual seems to call these "pinholes") to the IP you see in system preferences (which looks like 192.168.1.3 from the pictures you posted)

If that doesn't work, forward all ports (everything from 1 to 65536) to 192.168.1.3.

DJO

feeling like the class dunce now,

ok, got the manual, not sure what I'm looking for exactly...

when you say "Forward ports 6881 - 6889 to the IP "... Is this something l do on the modem or in the mac OS?

on the modem or in the mac

In the modem. Most block incoming connections, which causes grief with BitTorrent.

Go to http://192.168.1.1

Click on Services, and make sure that Names is highlighted.

Enter something like Torrent for the name. The protocol should be TCP and UDP and then plug in the starting & ending port ranges.

Click on Add New.

This will define these ports in the modem.

Then, move along to NAPT and select the service name you created earlier from the Service pop-up menu.

Plug in the IP address of your computer into the LAN address field (the IP address you saw in System Preferences: 192.168.1.3.) Leave WAN port empty. Click Add New.

Click on the Restart button and restart your modem.

You may also need to quit BitTorrent and try downloading again.

(and no I won't release the installer until I've properly tested it first, so don't bother asking :))

Hey, I;m changing my question.

About multiplayer games:

Playing with the settings we finally managed to get into the game; however, the one who is not the host doesn't see the ships moving; everyone is static. He can see the missiles and the ships blow up, but they are all rooted to their original spot.

Is there any way around this? The game looks really good and we really want to give multiplayer a try!

I'm having trouble with the actual FS2_open.app
I've got all the data files and vp files in correct folders with the FS2_open app.
I double click it and it won't even launch, doesn't create any files in the library, and gets this error in the crash log:
Command: FS2_Open
Path: /Applications/Freespace2/FS2_Open.app/Contents/MacOS/FS2_Open
Version: ??? (???)
PID: 760
Thread: Unknown

Link (dyld) error:

dyld: /Applications/Freespace2/FS2_Open.app/Contents/MacOS/FS2_Open can't open library: /System/Library/Frameworks/OpenAL.framework/Versions/A/OpenAL (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

At the mo I'm playing the standard freespace2 app I downloaded from earlier in the thread and it works (crashs though on 1 in 5 missions).
But I'd like those nice shiny enhanced features and graphics- I want my specular lighting and glow maps goddammit! :D

PS what a fantastic game.

Hey, in your first post you state that only need that needs fixing is network play.

Are you talking about being able to connect to FS2NetD, or just any multiplayer game? Have you been able to succesfully play a 2-player game?
If so, did you configure anything in particular to make it work, or it was just with the default settings?

Over LAN, only TCP/IP is supported
- FS2NetD support is not functional for the moment

Yes, I know that.
And that's exactly what I tried, but no luck; you can play the game but the player who is not the host doesn't see the other ships moving, so its of no use.

That's why I am asking if you, or someone, has actually tried this and succeeded in playing multiplayer.

mtr

@iffy80: Make sure to install the OpenAL framework from http://www.openal.org. 10.4 includes it already (in which case this is a bigger problem if that's what you have) but I'm not sure about older versions of OS X, they probably don't.

re: networking... No FS2NetD yet, but it will get replaced with original PXO support anyway so I haven't spent any more time actually trying to get FS2NetD to work on PPC. I know that there are general networking issues but when you find them please file a bug on Mantis (http://lore.maxgaming.net/~scp/mantis/main_page.php) so that we can keep track of everything. If you don't file a bug then it will likely get lost and never fixed. I'll take a look at the ships-not-moving problem but I never encountered that during testing. Is this problem with OSX-to-OSX games (since that's not something I tested)?

Edit: And networking was tested before the 3.6.7 release version. I spent an extra week just on multiplayer before release. It was only tested with Linux (x86_64) to OS X (PPC) though in both host-client and client-host configs. That certainly doesn't mean that it was perfect when the code finally hit CVS though so what got released to the public may have actually been a bit broken. I'm putting it on my list of things to test out this week and if I find the problem I'll release a bugfix version over the weekend.

colocolo
Dec 6, 2005, 04:18 PM
Yes, it was OS X to OS X.

It's like every packet but the location ones are being transmitted (of course I don't have the slightest clue how this game works under the hood, but that's the impression it gives).

It's pretty strange; if you are the host, you see everything right. If you are the client, you can move around and fire, and you can see the other ships firing. however, you see them standing still in their original positions, it never gets updated.

I will though file the bug as accurate as possible through the page you provided; I know that if you just vaguely explain a bug it will never get fixed.

Thanks a lot for the support.

iffy80
Dec 8, 2005, 10:19 AM
Thanks MTR/soulstorm, got it working now. It seems that OSX prior to 10.4 does NOT include the openAL framework.

I'm still having a few problems though-
The voices are messed up during mission briefings/debriefings and cutscenes. It plays the voice files and chatter from the mission not the briefing. Also it's hit or miss whether it will even play the cutscenes. Any way to fix this? should I install any of the VPs again?
Also, seeing as my mac is a tad slow (G4 imac with 512mb ram) I can't have all the graphical options maxed and still get decent framerate, I would like to turn the 3d hardware textures down, but as the background starfield is part of hardware accelarated in the SCP version it goes horribly blurry way before having any noticeable effect on ships etc... Is there a commandline config to turn off the 'enhanced' starry background and revert to the retail one that doesn't resize?

ALSO ALSO the hardlight wiki appears to be down. Anyone else having probs?

I am now horribly addicted to this game :) I didn't go to work today...

I'd still be interested in knowing what .vp files to download.

I downloaded and installed:
zpack (mv_core, mv_textures, mv_models, mv_music)
mv_effects
mv_befix (older beam animations...my mac couldn't handle the animated ones!)

I also went to http://www.penguinbomb.com/lightspeed/ZMW02download.html
And downloaded the new nebula effects (WOW stunning!) These go in your Freespace2/data/maps folder.
I also got the thruster effects.

anybody got the newest fsopen binary? I'm using tigital's beta6 right now, but fsopen is supposed to be better, right?

btw: does anybody know how well networking with mixed osx / windows lan works?
tigital's beta is supposed to perform exactly as the original FS2 was intended to perform, with the same graphics and sound.

FS2_Open is meant to add new graphics to the game, new AI and sound . As such, it's a lot better in all terms. I have the latest release.

Icculus.org is down because according to Ryan, they perform an ISP tranfer. Ryan wrote that the downtime should be no more than 24 hours, but that limit has been far exceeded, so all we have to do is wait! :)

So I was attempting to play this with a mouse and I would rather be listening to crazy frog than play it. Now if someone suggests playing both at the same time I don't know what I will do.

Here is the link http://www.saitekusa.com/usa/prod/x52.htm

The problem is like with vast majority of accessories they don't say if its mac compatible has anyone used this? or know of a good 2 handed system?

Hi I'm new to this board, and I'm thrilled to death about how great it is to have Freespace on my new PowerBook (15"). My question is how I activate the command line entries in order to use the new special effects. I am only barely familiar with Terminal in particular and UNIX in general. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

My question is how I activate the command line entries in order to use the new special effects. I am only barely familiar with Terminal in particular and UNIX in general. Any help with this would be most appreciated.
firstly, download the latest FS2_Open release. You would find the link in my first post in this thread. It contains a list of available command line options, and a short description of what they do. These descriptions are new additions to the FS2_Open readme file, and if you downloaded the file which contains the old readme, do it again to get the new one.

As for those command line options... Just because they are named "command line options" doesn't mean that they should involve use of the terminal...

What you must do is to change the file in the location ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg. If there isn't any such file in there, create one with this name (must have the plain text format!!). And in there you will enter the command line options leaving 1 space between each one. here is an example of my file contents:
-rlm -pcx32 -3dwarp -orbradar -no_fps_capping -glow -spec -rlm -ambient_factor 80 -jpgtga -targetinfo -allslev -d3dmipmap -env -alpha_env -decals -2d_poof -ballistic_gauge -dualscanlines
Save the file and run the game. This will enable the .vp files functions, according to what parameters you have set in this file. More information exists at the SCP wikki (which is down atm) and in the FS2_Open for OS X readme file.

Also note that in the ~/Library/FS2_Open/ location there is fs2_open.ini which will allow you to set custom resolutions for the game, which you can't do anywhere else.

Hope I helped.

I thought it might be interesting to make some stats known. The game has become very popular.

I made the Torrent available for download 27 days ago today.

It's since been downloaded 1,374 times. (!!!)

That works out to over 50 downloads per day.

(This only counts full downloads; not those who start & never finish.)

At 1.43GB a piece, that's over 72GB per day.

So, will all these downloads, are you saying no one here has actually tried multiplayer OS X to OS X?

Can anyone confirm that the bug of ships not moving on the client I reported earlier actually exists and its not just me?

One of the first things i try with any game is its multiplayer capacities, I am astounded no one else cares...

I've been extremely sick the past couple of weeks so I appologize for not being very responsive to anyone. I know I'm behind on getting back to some people through e-mail so just know that your aren't forgotten and I'll get responses out as soon as I can. Also stopped getting notification of new posts about a week ago (probably about the time icculus.org went down) so I didn't realize new stuff was here. ;)

Sooo, a few updates:

Installer should be out this week. No real ETA since it's the holidays, I'm still sick (and overly medicated), and I'm flooded with work. It will get uploaded as soon as I get the chance to do so.

CVS builds will start getting posted at least once a week starting tomorrow. These will basically be nightly builds, prone to bugs, and not well tested. They will be required for the new MediaVPs though which is why I'm rushing the things out. Plus I'm going to need the extra testers soon so it's time to get people ready. These CVS builds will be for 10.4+ only! I don't have the time to build nor the space to store the more compatible builds. Universal Binaries will start up in a couple of weeks. Builds will be available in source form if you wish to build yourselves, and OS X (PPC) 10.4+ comaptible binaries. The builds and CVS snapshots will be made available on at least one day every week or more often if major bugs are fixed or new features introduced.

The multiplayer problem should be fixed now. At least I'm hoping it is since I don't have the time to properly test it. The fix will be in the CVS build released tomorrow so anyone intrerested in multiplayer please test it for the previous, and any new, problems.

IO control code updates will hit late next month in the CVS builds so look out for that. This will include new pilot file code to work better with mods and the new ini file format for storing options and getting rid of most of the cmdline options. A new cross-platform GUI launcher will be made available as well which you can use to easily set the various options, video settings, and switch mods. And as long as there aren't any serious code issues, there will be full support for the X52 joystick as well (it's on my Christmas wish list and is supposed to be OS X compatible :D).

@Patmian212: Make sure to install SDL. You can get the needed dmg from libsdl.org (can't remember the direct link). I thought that I updated the previous build to include SDL since I had orginally forgotten to do it but you got the original version, or I forgot to upload the stupid update.

Hello people, I wonder if you could help me out?

I've downloaded and installed Freespace 2 as per the instructions given by mtr. The game plays fine (aside from a few sound glitches) throughout the first three training missions, but then crashes. Everytime, whether I skip training or play through it, it will crash straight after, just as it begins loading the breifing screen for the next mission.

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

I really want to play this game, please please help.

I am running 10.4.3 on a Titanium G4 Powerbook, 1GHz.

I had heard that there was a movie glitch in the original Freespace 2 (by volition) that made it into OS X and Linux ports of FS2_Open. I'm not really sure but...

Go to preferences and disable the talking heads icon, just to pass the mission that you encounter problems to.

Maybe that will fix your problem.

Hi all,

I've posted a download mirror of JXSelf's 1.46 Gb .dmg OS X distro of Freespace ( with his permission ) at Macologist. (This is the one that he posted originally as a bittorrent at http://freespace2.bluehome.net/ .)

The URL is here:
http://www.macologist.org/dload.php?action=file&file_id=414

Free registration is required for download, but it's pretty easy. Also we have only a limited number of download slots, so for the near future, it might be full (you'll receive an FTP error). Hopefully our scripts to mirror the file at Filefront will kick in, and you'll see an option to click on this mirror instead, and the DL speed will be much faster.

MTR: I'd be happy to host any distros you come up with as well.

Note: we may have some server disruptions after the new year, so please be patient.

Regards,
SD

Just a quick update on the CVS builds since they are a little late: ...

Moved back to using GCC 4 and had some issues so that has delayed things a little bit more than I wanted. The project and FS2_Open code is updated properly, just need proper versions of the OGG libs now and everything will get uploaded.

Also the past multiplayer issues should be resolved now. Beams were broken but appear to work properly now. Still needs a bit of testing so if anyone finds a beam bug then please file it in Mantis. Orient and position data is now properly handled as far as endianess goes so ships and other objects should once again update properly. I found a couple of other minor issues as well during testing and going over the code so hopefully everything will be more workable now. There are still byte-swap issues that are known but those will get solved in the next week or two.

CVS builds are an entirely different beast than release builds so for those who decide to use the CVS builds know that there are quite a few changes compared to the 3.6.7 release version. I'll make a quick FAQ about the changes when the CVS build goes live. Just know that if you should be prepared to get your hands a little dirty if you get into the CVS versions. :)

Hey, I'm having some trouble with the game. It installed fine and all is well in the program-running sense of the word, but my mouse movement just won't cut it. I have a Mighty Mouse - I know, I know, but I don't have enough money to afford another one right now, christmas, what can I say - and its sensitivity is simply TOO LOW. I've played FS for the PC and the mouse movement was fine, so this is definitely something to do with my Mighty Mouse/Mac/FS. I know most people might scold me for trying to game with a MM, but I really don't care, its useful for what I do and goes with the Mac. Anyway, is there anyway of tweaking the sensitivity settings beyond the maximum allowed limit? I live in Brazil, so mac-compatible mouses with good functionality are hard (and expensive) to find, and joysticks and joypads are downright impossible to find for the mac. Is there some file I can tweak? I have the sensitivity settings on maximum both in-game and in the mouse settings, so I have no other way of tweaking the mouse. Using the keyboard isn't all that good and nice in my experience, so what can I do? Is there some program that will allow me to über-tweak my mouse? Or some way of setting the maximum sensitivity threshold to another level in-game, so that I don't have to physically lift the mouse and re-place it to get some good moving action going?

Thanks,
Guy with Mighty Mouse in Brazil.

If I can fall asleep right now I'll have about 2 and a half hours of sleep before I have to hit the road again... but I wanted to get the CVS builds out to everyone. :)

This is going to be very short on details since I'm not able to update the webpage for everything and only had time to do the binaries and not the source, but grab it from here: http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/nightly

I'll update late tomorrow or Monday with a webpage which will be maintained and give a rundown on the changes, known bugs, new features, and things fixed for each build that comes out. For now just know that quite a few cmdline options have been changed. They are renamed, removed, or added so check the wiki (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Command-Line_Reference) for the updated list if you have problems. The main one will probably be -rlm since it has been removed and is enabled by default. A new one is -img2dds which will compress images to save memory (big help you are short on system and/or video RAM). Let me know if you have problems, or just wait for the webpage to list them for you. ;)

@Pastorius & redAPPLE:
It can use a mouse but was designed to be used with a joystick. You can get away with just a keyboard if you need to. Mouse control is crappy at best so use a joystick/keyboard or wait a couple of months for the new input code which will greatly improve mouse support.

The only public installer right now are those things attached to the ends of your arms (hands, in case anyone couldn't guess :D). An installer will be released when ever I get off my butt and upload the thing. I'm not even going to bother giving a time frame on that since I've pushed it back numerous times already. When it hits the net I'm sure we'll both be relieved.

Thanks for the multiplayer patch, now it works!

Though there's still a small glitch: if you are not the host, you can't use lock missiles accurately. You can acquire the lock, but when you fire, the missile behaves like a dumbfire.
You lose a great deal of firepower because of this.

Aside from that, and that the game crashes while trying to play the standard multiplayer campaign, it is working great, and it is tons of fun.

As you are running os x 10.3.9, you must install openAL.

Refer to the first posts of this thead for insctructions on how to do that.

Done still no joy...

Also when I first open the game I see a white screen and hear music, but nothing else until I hit enter.

The CVS server for fs2_open has been down since around Sunday and that has really slowed things down for me. I've got a back log of fixes without the ability to commit them and I can't get a good list of changes between builds. All updates are currently on hold until the server gets going again, then I'll post a new build with everything up-to-date once more.

@colocolo: Working on the new multiplayer problem now. It should be fixed in the next CVS build, which will be released whenever the CVS server starts working again.

@mishi: Several people have reported a similar problem recently, all with the official 3.6.7 version but on no specific operating system. It's being looked into but unfortunately I don't have any suggestions to help you out right now. If I think of something I'll let you know. The only thing I can offer is to use the "-allslev" cmdline option which will enable all missions in the mission simulator. Playing these won't progress you in the campaign any, but you'll at least get in some practice until everything finally gets working.

@iknowjack: Try running a debug build and upload your $(HOME)/Library/FS2_Open/data/fs2_open.log file somewhere that I can look at it. As far as the white-screen-with-music problem goes, that's the intro movie playing. It's actually a code bug that it ends up white but it works ok if there is a splash screen to show first (if you have the MediaVPs installed). It will be fixed properly in the next official version but for now there isn't really anything you can do about it except install the MediaVPs (at least mv_core). You can get the MediaVPs from here: http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php?list.2

Running FS2_Open-debug I get a "operation cannot be completed Code 10810" message...

As far as $(HOME)/Library/FS2_Open/data/fs2_open.log goes there wasn't one there.

If the movie problem doesn't cause me to not be able to play the game then that is not too big a deal.

Thanks for your help!

As many applications, it saves the necessary files inside the library folder of your home.

Home->Library->FS2_Open

All i get in home-->Library--->fs2_open-->data is a cache folder, multi.log, a players folder, and tcp.cfg. Did a search for fs2_open.log with negative results.

Is it generated by running the debug build? If so how do I do that?

I was actually answering the "where are my saved files" question. I should have been more specific, sorry.

As far as I know, the only log that is generated with the standard executable is called FS2_Open.crash.log, in Library->Logs->CrashReporter

The debug must create another log, as it is the point of being a debug. But I don't know where it is saved.

As far as I can tell I am having exactly the same problem as iknowjack:

The game crashes whenever I accept any mission (at the point where it would take me to the weapon outfitting screen). I have tried skipping the training missions, but get the same problem with the first real mission.

I have tried running FS2_Open-debug but also get the same error.

One strange thing though - if I create a multi-player pilot and "host" my own game (except without trying to connect to any other players) tha game loads fine. So I can actually play missions in multi-player mode, but not in single player mode.

Any tips / suggestions would make my day - played FS2 on a PC years ago, but these new screenshots have me salivating...

I booted up freespace to try hosting a game and it crashed...

No need to be mad... there are two main ways to crash the game:

1.- was it the coop campaign? that is the only multiplayer game that crashed constantly. You can play each mission separately but not the whole as a campaign.

2.- If you are the host, do NOT commit before the clients, or you will crash.

Aside from that, the game crashes intermittently in multiplayer, though it is very playable.

Only major issue you will find is that clients can't lock missiles, they just travel in a straight line. It is quite a pain as every client has to equip dumbfires.

Well, I hope that gets fixed soon, and then multiplayer will be done!

Hello all,

I've some trouble with my keyboard settings on my PowerBook with a Belgian Azerty layout.

Number keys don't work when I must use communication panel in game. I tried:
- several combination (shift, fn , alt-number key) and 'virtual' num pad but they didn't work.
- to change keyboard config but I don't find the communication settings for singleplayer in the options. BTW, where Freespace save option such as keyboard config?

So, what's the trick?

Thanks

It would be helpful if you mentioned the system version you use, as well as the version of FS2_Open (is it a nightly build or the last stable 3.6.7 build?)...

I am using OSX 10.3.9, running fs2_open 3.6.7, downloaded from macologist.

I really appreciate the effort you guys are putting forth to ressurect an awesome game.

I am also running 10.3.9 and have the same version of FS2 (also downloaded from Macologist). As before am experiencing the same problem as iknowjack, except the multiplayer side of the game seems to work OK.

Your help greatly appreciated.:)

Seems that Macologist's mirror has wrongly pre-installed files. Have you pm Santaduck about this? I never faced such a problem, and I used both 10.3.9 and Tiger, with FS@_Open 3.6.7. But I downloaded the disk images, extracted the data, and made a copy of FS2 myself. And it worked flawlessly.

Perhaps you should try telling us what are the contents of the directory of your main FS2 installation.

NOTE: I thing that mv_core doesn't work well with some other components... but I'm not really sure.

Just post your FS2 directory. Maybe the problem lies in the way files are put into this folder.
