It's a fake. Airbags deploy instantaneously and there's usually white powder that flies about.

Sorry for spoiling all the fun.

It deployed as soon as she hit his bumper with her bag. Either way, pretty funny.

It's a fake...

Plus an old lady wouldn't be strong enough to deploy an airbag. You need to be driving about 40km/h before they can get enough force to be activated.

Still, it's a funny link. :D

It's lower in the States cause they don't wear seatbelts. I think it's somewhere around 15km/h.

Interesting. That makes sense. Still, even the force of a 1500kg car travelling at 15km/h would be a big ask for an old lady with a handbag. :p

Oh god yeah, there's no way she could've popped those airbags.

Could've been a flawed airbag mechanism. I doubt it, but it could. Some people have had them deploy while just driving down the street.

we don't? it's the law in most states if not all. I got in a minor fender-bender a few months back going around 5 mph at impact and my airbag didn't deploy. Looking at my fender i can't see granny doin' worse damage.

Last official figures I saw was a 76% rate of usage, that's shameful. I think our current level of around 96% is pretty piss weak too.

Sorry, just checked, usage went from 71% in 2000 to 80% in 2004. That means one in five drivers are risking their own and other's lives. Terrible.

I agree, I wish everyone would realize how important it is to always wear a seat belt! Heck, I often strap mine on before I even start the car.

that's still a pretty sorry percentage...its a deep rooted habit for me, just like using turn signals (another pet peeve of mine).

We have to put it on before we start the car, if you don't do that in your driving test you fail before you even leave the RTA carpark.

Well duh, of course!

What happens when they pass their driving test? I hate how there aren't 2 or more driving tests in Australia, or is it just NSW. Sucks.

Airbags differ in car models, and I myself have been in a wreck going 20 MPH and the airbag never deployed. Later that year my friend was hit driving through a parking lot (someone back out of their spot into him) and his airbag went off. They can't be predicted.

Whether its fake or not, I can't tell.

Now that you mention it, I just abhor it when people decide to not use their turn signals. Just like to reach out and smack them. ;)

Well duh, of course!

What happens when they pass their driving test? I hate how there aren't 2 or more driving tests in Australia, or is it just NSW. Sucks.

In NSW the deal is that at some age, can't remember what it is, you apply for your Learner's Licence or "L's" as we call them by sitting a computerised test of road rules, hazards and general driving knowledge. You are then allowed to drive up to a maximum 80 km/h and must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver. The fully licensed driver must then sign a log book detailing the skills tested in each driving session, once these skills have been tested and signed totalling no less than 50 hours driving, the new driver can then apply for their Red Provisional License or "Red P's"

This involves a driving test on public roads with set tasks to be performed as well as testing basic competence and ability to deal with changing conditions. If this is passed, the driver can now drive unaccompanied and up to a maximum speed of I think 80km/h.

After one year, the driver can apply for a Green Provisional License "Green P's" which is granted after the completion of a Hazard perception test - a computerised driving simulator. This allows them to travel at speeds up to 100 km/h. This can then be renewed after a year in the same manner.

One the driver has held their green P's for two years, they must then pass another Hazard Perception Test to get their unrestricted license allowing them to drive at the national maximum 110km/h or a safe speed where there is no posted speed limit (the 1400km's of Sturt Highway in the Northern Territory).

It's fairly intensive and takes quite a while, back when I did it there were no green p's, you went from your red's to your full license just by paying the money.
