"If Google comes along and … provides some basic AJAX-based editing, and allows people to do this editing in XHTML and OpenDocument, you have a clear line of capability that goes from simple HTML to a little bit more complicated but data-centric XHTML to a truly bridging XML technology, OpenDocument," Edwards said.
This would really make fumes come out of Ballmer's pants, and liquids to come out of Bill's.
But could it really happen??

From my limited experience, writing a program that would allow editing and saving of text files would be remarkably simple. The fine-tuning, fonts, styles, etc. makes it a bit more difficult. Still...

they could very well do it too. they dont have the negativity that apple seems to have in many user's eyes.... they could... but they are taking their time...
Google is going to be a powerhouse, bigger than it already is.

Ya, but I was thinking something more on the side of OpenOffice or MS Word, instead of TextEdit. Both OOo and Word are extremely complex and huge, but yeah...

Google is becoming quite more immense even when compared to other pseudo-monopolies such as AOL Time Warner and Microsoft. I mean consider what Google has. Yes, a great websearch engine. But also...
news (searchable), blogs (searchable), images (searchable), ever-growing email (searchable), maps, addresses (searchable), scholarly articles (searchable), dictionary/encyclopaedia (searchable), calculations, satellite images, three-dimensional earth imagery, shopping comparisons, personalized homepage (templates+personal additions), language translations, catalogs (searchable), books (searchable), university information (searchable), movie listings (searchable), transportation (searchable), personalized advertising and affiliates, television and video searches and so forth.
When you consider the scope of how they gather information, handle it, and distribute it to users, it's really quite staggering how much influence they have (and continue to develop). At this point, they're coming close to perfecting the major information forks that the internet was originally most used for. Where they go from there is going to be interesting.

Even if it is hard... Google may not have the staff that Apple does, but they do have as much money as Apple... And Apple does a heck of a lot more than just make a word processor.

I'd be real happy if they'd just split the PC-market 50/50 between them. That should keep both of them on their toes and leave a bit more space for apple than is the case now.
Btw - why do you think google would be worse than Ms?

I have to agree, Google is pretty good about catering to all platforms. Just look at the technology they use to support all browsers.
It may take longer to come to mac, but Google is really good about releasing.

They're working with Sun on this one for crying out loud. Do you really thing it won't run on SunOS? If it runs on SunOS than it most likely runs on other unices such as Linux and OS X.

While I do consider KOffice clunky and StarOffice "Windows 3.1", I have found OpenOffice to be extremely nice and useable on Linux, mostly Gnome. For the mac, the new Abiword 2.4 (which is Cocoa BTW), is very nice. Infact, I prefer Abiword on mac or OOo on Linux more than MS Office on any platform... but that's just me.
And if you're talking about an office program rather just a word processor, OO is okay I guess on mac...

Where's the .NET killer to scare MS into fixing their crap IDE so I can work without getting headaches?

The agreement between Sun and Google also kicks off further collaboration between the companies on projects like OpenOffice.org, the open source productivity suite that is the world's leading suite on the Solaris Operating System (Solaris OS) and Linux--and the leading alternative suite on Microsoft Windows.
All is not lost though.

Looks like a good old fashioned cage fight coming up for the next dominant OS - tongue firmly in cheek. Unfortunately MS has a mighty hold on the market, but these may be seminal moves towards a new way of thinking about Operating Systems and technology. Once given choices for OS / Office Software etc. I'd hope to see consumers demand compatability - so I can open a Word file with Appleworks....etc.

I was just thinking today. Apple is essentially the biggest they've been since the mid-80s. Might history repeat itself? Might things go afoul at Apple if Steve starts getting bigheaded with this newfound success? Apple pioneered the downfall of IBM before getting internally rotten, and losing their self-created PC market to Microsoft. Again, Apple has pioneered the downfall of Microsoft with internet savvy and secure software. However, instead of Apple getting big, will they get mixed up in internal affairs, and wind up losing the internet/security market they've started to Google?
However, this is a gross oversimplification of the politics and markets involved, and probably contains many fallacies that make this less likely, but it's still fun to speculate.

Wonder how our usage of the internet, and computers, will change when Google offers everything I want in web-based form?

don't know if this has been posted yet, but Google's teaming up with NASA...
http://money.cnn.com/2005/09/29/technology/nasa_google.reut/
"Google and NASA share a common desire -- to bring a universe of information to people around the world," Schmidt said.
They could very well put a monopoly on computer technology. Much, much, bigger than Microsoft could ever *hope* to be. They've got all the makings of an OS system, they've got a monopoly on phone searches (Google SMS, anyone? and it's still FREE!!! except if you don't have a package text message plan), they're getting into video, they've got mapping...
I'd love myself if I was working there right about now.
