hi, i found a buyer online for an unopened (except for the bar code i cut out) ipod i bought during a promo. my question is, do i need to give the buyer a copy of my receipt? what happens if they open the box and the product is defective? can they just go to the apple store and have it fixed? i just don't want them coming after me! thanks.

Usually the bar code can be used as a proof of purchase, but since you've used it, they'd be out of luck.
As for the receipt, if you give it to the buyer, make sure it doesn't have any personal information on it (i.e. credit card number, etc.). I think legally, the warranty would be transferred to the new owner, however, the warranty period began when you purchased it.
Also, I think Apple has a way to go into their system to see if items are still under warranty. But that may not apply to ipods.

thanks for your response!
i'd be really reluctant to give anyone my receipt, even with info scratched out, because i'm sure they can pull up all the confidential stuff by the barcode. but maybe the whole thing is moot, as my buyer stood me up this evening, leaving me standing out in the rain for two hours :( now, as much as i can use the money, i'm this close to tearing the shrinkwrap off the box and keeping it for myself! serves me right for buying it in my favorite color :D

I got an ipod mini as a present. So, I dont have the receipt. I went to the Apple store for changing the firewire cable: they took the ipod, look at the serial number on the back and verified it with their system...So, no receipt, no bar code...and they replaced my faulty cable....
