looking closely at the etching on my nano, instead of a total matte silver that i see on my mini, there's little specks of brown in there, almost rust-like.

someone told me that it just had to do with the laser intensity, and these colors are normal.

anyone else have this?

That's a normal side effect of laser etching cheap stainless. Preventing it would involve giving the iPod a bath, something you probably don't want Apple doing to yours :)

It's a luck thing, laser etching causes oxidation. There are stainless cleaners around that may help to clean off the residual iron, try to pick a non-abrasive acidic type.
