Half-Life, the first person shooter originally released in 1998, skyrocketed developer Valve (http://store.steampowered.com/publisher/Valve) to fame and influenced an entire generation of first person shooters. Despite its popularity, the game has never been available through Steam for Mac, until today.

As discovered by Cult of Mac (http://www.cultofmac.com/212348/valve-quietly-releases-original-half-life-on-steam-for-mac/), Valve released Half-Life for Mac on Steam this morning, though the company has yet to make an official announcement about the product.

Other Valve games like Half-Life 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/26/half-life-2-coming-to-mac-os-x-today/) and its episodes have been previously available on the Mac version of Steam, but users can now add the original Half-Life (http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/) to their collections for $9.99. It has also been bundled into several different value packs.

Half-Life was originally developed for the Mac back when the Windows version was released, but due to disagreements with Apple, the Mac version was scrapped at the time (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/12/20/how-half-life-1-for-mac-was-canceled-at-the-last-minute/).

The Half-Life page in Steam still indicates that the game is Windows only, but Cult of Mac bought and installed the game on a Mac to confirm that it functions. The game can be purchased via Steam for Mac (http://store.steampowered.com/app/70/) for $9.99.

That game was awesome when it first came out.
I used to play it up close on a 120" projection screen with 5.1 Surround system in the dark and it was very scary!

I wonder if Steam would let me play it on the Mac for free, considering I owned the Windows version.
I guess I'll sign in later to see what happens.

I had seen an article over on Phoronix about a Half-Life Beta for Linux Steam yesterday, so I decided to check my Mac and was thrilled to see Half-Life was listed as a game that I could install! I got it installed and it runs wonderfully on my 2009 iMac. I did notice in the Linux version [which doesn't launch for some reason that I still need to look into] that there appear to be directories for the other Half-Life games as well [Blue Shift, Opposing Forces]? These might be making the jump to Linux/Mac as well!

I remember writing but not sending hate mails to Gabe Newell because they'd promised a Mac version from back when the game was in initial development, then backed out.

My rage feels vindicated somehow! :)

All you need is the old CD key. It will give you quite a few pieces of software.

I started up steam and it recognized my old PC version. I was able to download the Mac version for free (in minutes) and it plays great!

I know what I'll be doing this week-end. :)

Somebody needs to try and install a mod for this new release of Half-Life..I'm really excited to see if this will work! Probably wont as mods use their own DLLs.

Third party mods have extra compiled code (DLL's). So unless Valve has done something that lets OS X Half-Life run Windows code... :p

I noticed Half Life appearing last night. I was going to test it, but my install got borked by the update that they pushed yesterday. (You need to reinstall the client if this happened to you) While I'm sure a lot of people are happy Half Life is finally on the Mac, I'm much more interested in them getting DOTA 2 ported. I also hear that there are still some significant issues with CS:GO that aren't fixed that really should be prioritized.

If that doesn't say enough about VALVe.. Well it doesn't actually. Nothing can tell you how amazing VALVe is. If you have not played Portal, do that now. Notice the company took their time to port this old game over to the Mac just so they can sell them for cheap. They care about customers, not money. Making games free for a limited time before they make a sequel... thats great marketing that makes everybody happy!

I can confirm that the following are available for Mac, I am downloading them right now:
Half Life (Beta)
Counter Strike (Beta)
Day of Defeat
Deathmatch Classic
Opposing Force
Blue Shift
Ricochet
Team Fortress Classic

All of these came up when I activated the CD Key from my old Windows copy of Half Life Generation.

Edit: Ok, maybe not.... only Counter Strike (Beta) seems to run... the others, despite allowing the game files to download, wont launch.

Funny! I deliberately stopped playing the game, about half-way through, on a Windows box 10 or 12 years ago in anticipation of eventually finishing it on the Mac I had at home, as I thought surely the Mac version would be out soon! :D

The Mac version is not available in Australia yet. Oh well. I have waited for it since 2010 so I can wait for another day or two. It would have been better if the Source remake was the version released but at least this is the authentic Half-Life experience.

Looking forward to the Steambox in the next couple of years. Hopefully all the Half-Life games will be available on that when it gets released, including the mythical Half-Life 3.

I took the train ride in the beginning of the game and got my answer when I looked at Barney - it's the HD Barney. Doesn't that mean it's Half-Life: Source? I can't see Valve porting the original HL1, which ran on an entirely different engine than the one they've already ported to OS X for HL2.

If you still have your CD-Key, you simply need to activate your game on Steam and boom, they'll show up in your library: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5414-TFBN-1352.

I've just done it on my Mac with my CD-Key for Half-Life: Adrenaline Pack (http://www.ign.com/games/half-life-adrenaline-pack/pc-767566) that I bought about 15 years ago for my Windows PC and all the games included in the CD showed up in my library.

Right now, only Half-Life and Counter-Strike (which show up as "Half-Life (Beta)" and "Counter-Strike (Beta)" on my Mac) are installable though.

Too little, too late.

I have the windows version and I see it in my mac library now, but the game is completely outdated to be enjoyed today, especially with Black Mesa mod out.

I don't see why anyone may give 10$ for that game today, only if it is bundle with other valve games it worth getting it, just for nostalgia.

As an all-time Counter Strike 1.6 player, this opens up for 1.6 on the Mac!! Have been missing this for a long time, and it's the ONLY reason I have Windows installed via Boot Camp.

Hope Valve will port 1.6 too - it shouldn't be so difficult as it's just a mod for HL1 :D :D

Pretty interesting...blueshift and gearbox in particular.

I don't know how excited I would get over that. When I downloaded the Portal and Portal 2 bundle a few weeks ago, it included the Level Editor.

Problem? It doesn't work in Mountain Lion.

----------

Damn, people are still worked up over a 12 year old game?

Valve, unlike a lot of game developers, is squarely on the side of gamers. For example, I was able to pick up two incredible games - Portal and Portal 2 - for $6 as a bundle!! Who does that?? EA? Nope? Blizzard? Nope. They're in it for those who enjoy their games, fantastic as they are. Left 4 Dead 2? I so got sucked into it, 32 hours logged before I knew what the Hell happened! "Best coop game ever" doesn't do it justice!

Am I the only one who was hoping we'd see the OS 9 (Mac Classic OS ) version released? Even just for fun? ;)

Let me see if I can find my PPC 6100 or my Lombard.
I think my PB 520c can only run 8.1.

----------

Maybe you're playing with the "High Definition pack" that was included with the expansion Half-Life: Blue Shift turned on.

Thank you for the info

LOL, every and each company cares about money.

Well, sort of...some companies care about money to the exclusion of everything else and will do nothing without running the numbers and trying to maximize everything, whereas some companies will do something because they think it's nice to do but doesn't necessarily have any immediate tangible effect on the bottom line. Valve is run in a highly non-standard way, though it sounds like it would be an interesting place to work.

How about the Counterstrike Mod?

Amen. And The Specialists 3.0

----------

I wonder if this is a port of Half-Life: Source, or of the actual (Non-Source) Half-Life.

Non-source judging by the screenshots.

----------

Damn, people are still worked up over a 12 year old game?

Yeah.. it's awesome.

----------

Really? There wasn't much difference between the two though, just graphics, right?

No, different stories. But the graphics difference was amazing. I remember playing HL: Source and it was... "Wow... " back when it first came out.

----------

OMG THIS IS GREAT NEWS! :D

You still play 1.6? I would log on every once in a while...but I thought 1.6 was taken over by aimbots and walls. Unless... you are one of those aforementioned people?

No, different stories.

No, same story. Half-Life: Source is just Half-Life ported to the Source engine, nothing more.

I took the train ride in the beginning of the game and got my answer when I looked at Barney - it's the HD Barney. Doesn't that mean it's Half-Life: Source? I can't see Valve porting the original HL1, which ran on an entirely different engine than the one they've already ported to OS X for HL2.

HL: Source actually uses the original character models, not the HD pack that came with Blue Shift. Though they could always be rectifying that in this version.

Damn, people are still worked up over a 12 year old game?

Sure, why not? It's a game known today as a modern classic, a landmark title in the history of video games, and one that us Mac gamers (and us Dreamcast gamers…) were literally cheated out of - a nearly-complete version was created, but never shipped. Now we will have a chance to play it on our platform of choice. I'm looking forward to giving it a try, though I'll personally hold off buying until there's an official announcement from Valve - from the problems some folks are having, it's sounding like maybe this is a late beta that sneaked out to the public before it was ready or something like that.

On my 2006 Macbook (2ghz, 2Gb ram, gma950), I'm getting an error on launch.

Fatal error :

Error initializing Main frame buffer.

I only get this error in full screen mode.

I can get the game to work using windowed mode....

I've looked the error on Google, and several Linux users are reporting the error.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/894

Let's hope for the best.

Anyone know how to disable the HD weapons? Don't like them or the new sound effects.

The HD models are fine, just the weapons suck compared to the originals.

Yep. Some companies recognize that providing a product or service that makes your customers happy has a tendency to result in profits. As a result, they make happy customers priority one, and profits are simply a side-effect of achieving that.

Hey, maybe everybody knows about this, but I figured out how to access steam from my campus where it is blocked. I am a faculty member, and my fastest machine is on campus. There is a free program from Logmein called Hamachi. You install it on your home machine and your work machine. When you want to open steam you launch it on the home machine (or leave it running if you don't have remote access) and then launch it on the work machine. It creates a VPN connection to your home.

For me this circumvented my university's block of the steam client. Now, I am a business professor, so I can't say that I condone playing games at work, or bypassing IT restrictions, but I thought that some of you may have the need to access steam when it has been blocked. This information is for purely academic purporses. ;) Use this it at your own risk.:D
