loud hard drive

I had an old 40 gig hard drive laying around, so I went to CompUSA and bought a cheap USB 2 enclosure, and now I have myself a very useful external hard drive. Problem is, the thing is loud. For 30 bucks, I didn't expect the enclosure to have any sound dampening. I have the option to put hard drives to sleep checked, but is there a way to decrease the amount of time of inactivity required to sleep the hard drive? Maybe move it down to a minute or 2? thanks.

It could be that the hard drive is failing.. it depends on what the source of the loudness is.

What brand drive? Older Maxtors have been known to be pretty loud, I think the quietest drive I have owned was a Seagate something or other that I put in a custom built PC.

I actually had 2 drives. One was an IBM, one was a WD, both the same size and a few years old and loud. Maybe I just think they're loud because I'm used to my quiet drives in my G5 and Powerbook.
