Without Jobs, Apple would be different. One day that will happen.

The main thing is to have GOOD leadership, though. As much as Steve has done, it doesn't HAVE to be him. A different leader would lack some of Steve's strenght's but he'd have his own. A GOOD leader is the main thing.

I don't tie Apple's future success to Jobs as much as some do. The details and flavor, of course, do tie to him. But even those don't JUST tie to him. Ives comes to mind in particular, and lots of talented team members. Plus, whoever comes after Jobs might just take lessons from what Jobs did right (and wrong). Jobs' vision need not end when he retires.

I can only imagine what apple would look like today, if Jobs hadn't come back. I remember those years of confusing product lines, OS9 (not a terrible OS by any means, but OSX is just beautiful), and Gil Amelio, who didn't seem to do anything. I can't imagine Apple being in the siutation that it is today without Jobs.

As for the future - Any company can get by, and I am sure Apple will, but it won't be the same. Could be great, but for sure, not the same.

i would have to agree on that one, if Jobs hadn't come back, Apple would just sank lower and lower.

No, not dead. Amiga was BADLY mismanaged and still couldn't quite die. You can still buy new model Amigas today!

If Jobs hadn't returned, Apple would have suffered terribly, OS X would never have been made, and in the end they would have been bought.

The momentum was to great for a simple "death" of the #2 consumer platform. But it wouldn't have been pretty.

Out. Of. Business.I disagree- although for all intents and purposes: yes. :) Apple would belong to some other company by now. Who? Who knows.

Hmm OS X would have been BeOS. Since BeOS was founded only to be tried to be bought by Apple.....

I think it would be very diffrent, but not dead.
