View Full Version : Apple Merchandise Pulled

MacRumors
Dec 7, 2002, 07:36 AM
Spymac posts (http://www.spymac.com/comments.php?id=300_0_5_0_C) a followup on the Apple Merchandise that appeared at Apple stores over the Thanksgiving weekend... indicating they had all been pulled:

When questioned, retail workers will tell you that the gifts were only scheduled for a Thanksgiving weekend visit, though none of the accompanying paperwork that they originally arrived with indicated such a short visit.

This confirms reports (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=15139) by MacRumors users who attempted to get these items. Images of these (now) rare items are also available in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadid=15139).

It wasn't really pulled. @ the turkey day event my friend asked an apple person they told us they only got enough in for a night but if they had more they would just keep them until they sold out.

Kind of dumb to pull them IMO.
Having worked retail before and seeing the markup on these kinds of trinkets I know they make a lot of money off of them for very little shelf space.
300-400% markup is not unheard of with these items. With the prices Apple is charging I wouldn't be surprised if the markup was much higher. So why pull them. It's easy money and gets people to buy things who may have just been looking and not interested in buying computers, software or other.

They should make it regular along with T-shirts and other things. Its easy money in my opinion.

I would rather buy an Apple pen than an Apple computer right now.

If there's a demand, they should keep selling this stuff. It's probably cheap to have made, I'm sure they were making a huge profit.

DON'T!

"I have a friend who's mum is the cleaner for a man who's important in Cupertino, and his answering machine (which she shouldn't have been listening to anyway) said..."

NEW PENS AT MWSF! - White ink for consumers, and silver for pros. Ultra portable and light, with motion charging...and...

(sorry, I couldn't resist the opportunity to use the "my friend said" line, even though I was blatently lying!)

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Xmas eve sale, and the same items are rolled out again. I'll be sure to watch carefully next announcement of a store event. This will make sure that the places get packed every time if you can only get the special items for events.

regardless, no commercial enterprise or retail outlet is not going to acknowledge the day and night before Xmas for last minute shoppers. Call it what you will - its the day to bring out the fluff for those last minute purchases. Its all about marketing and the bottom line.

I was kind of hoping that the Apple Pocket Knife would lead into a whole line of Apple Knives, Cutlery and Swords.

Anybody know if we had a "special event" last year towards the end of December?

What about a Mac Army Knife? It could have the following "tools":

¥ Spatula blade to scrape off the "Intel Inside" label on friends' PCs
¥ Scissors to cut up those long lasting warranties when they expire
¥ The right size Torxª screwdriver to aid with Pismo (and other?) memory installs
¥ That really long allen wrench and case separator for those who need to open their Mac Plus
¥ A paper clip sized tool to eject floppies on older Macs
¥ A small scraper tool to clean that junk off the moving parts inside a non-optical mouse
¥ other ideas???

What do you mean, "legal reasons"? Apple is a business, not a part of the government. They can call it whatever they want. Or do you think someone would sue them for having a Christmas Eve Sale? That'd be a good one... I'd love to see the money that would be wasted on that one.

Actually, I was hoping the knife would be one of these (http://www.victorinox.com/newsite/en/produkte/index.htm) CyberTools with an Apple logo.

Ahh... good call. I claim stupidity.

this is just a ploy by apple to add to the mystique and 'uniqueness' of the company.

anything they can do to avoid criticism on the performance of their hardware these past few years. we are looking at IBM being the saviour (CPU-wise), a company that gave away the PC market to beginwith....

Is it just me, or are there no pictures in the linked thread? (other than the one of the keychain?)

I've got one of those cyber tools. Very handy. Helped me a few times when I upgraded my Wallstreet laptop and replaced a bad AC /sound board.
