Still over 30 minutes from Apple's media event, ApplexNet.com has posted (http://applexnet.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1622) what appear to be actual photos of the new iPod to be released today.
The new iPod was somewhat revealed (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/10/20051012113331.shtml) in poster ads published just an hour ago. The new iPod appears to have a wider screen and form factor than previous iPods.
The new iPod in the photo matches the artists renditions from the ads. It has a wider screen and the one in the pictures appears to be have a 30GB capacity.
Photo of new iPod is mirrored: New iPod (widerscreen) (http://www.macrumors.com/downloads/5G_ipod.jpg).

I must just be a dweeb, but I can't tell if the new iPod in the picture is actually wider than the current iPod, or if the larger screen is merely creating the illusion of wideness. Anyone else have an opinion?

Yah why is it that Apple is incapable of making some of the most innovative devices I've ever seen from people NOT in the industry. IF some high school kid can whip up some cool design that would probably sell like mad why can’t Apple. Once again Apple has gone with the same old warmed over design. 30 years from now we are still going to be stuck with the same form factor just smaller.

I honestly would not enjoy watching ANY movies on a screen that small (2.5-2.6"?). if you took a current gen iPod and rotated it 90 degrees left or right and stretched the LCD the length of the iPod, maybe I may bite. But hey, If Steve does release a Vid iPod, i hope he's packing some impressive capabilities as well (ala ROKR. the lack of). it will be such a disappointment if apple were to release one and it does not 10 up every PVP currently available.

As many have said so far, it will not be a Video iPod, it will be an iPod with video playback capabilities. It is not designed to watch full-length feature films on the go. That may come at a later time, but not today.

Looks real to me and I hope so: it might be wider than current iPods (not sure) but I love the bigger screen and (apparently) thinner body. Video questions aside, it's a nice evolution. Who would vote negative? The market wouldn't have gone for some massive PSP-style iPod.

New white iPod with video revealed!
(just read it in the ars IRC channel #macintosh)
320*240 pixel 2.5inch display 260k colours
30 and 60GB
EDIT:
also available in black
$299 and $399 respectively with over 75 hours video playback (?)
iTunes 6 released for the video iPod with 4 new features:
1. gifting (give someone a song/playlist/album)
2. customer reviews a la Amazon
3. Just For You personalised recommendations (beta)
4. video (allows for music video purchase - $1.99 for song and video or 6 pixar short films 320*240 res. - has DRM but no burning of videos)

The new iMac lineup prices are as follows: $1299 US for the 1.5GHZ 17-incher, $1799 US for the 2.1GHz 20-incher.
New iPod announced! The new iPod, as speculated, features video capabilities and the wider display, but it’s still a music-first device.
The device will feature a 2.5-inch display, QVGA resolution (320 x 240), and will MPEG-4 h.264 (natch), and presumably Quicktime.
More details to come…

Gotta love it if part of the big announcement is new iMacs, not the stuff everyone was expecting. (Gotta NOT love it if Enderle was one of the few who got it right :D Although he said black iMacs, not mentioning features.)
If AI's rumor is right about a new iMac and its features, this would be one very cool iMac! A nice consolation for delaying PowerBooks another week?
(And I do think black Macs are bound to come sooner or later--if not today--now that Apple knows there's demand from the nano.)
Thinner, faster, black iMac with videophone built in? Dare I dream? Wait--I don't need a new Mac... I can wait for Intel... I can wait for Intel...

The new iPod will be 30% thinner than the current 20GB iPod (making it 0.44-inches thick—say wha?), and will feature a 60GB version (which should be thinner than the current 0.63-inch thick 20GB iPod), and editions of both in black.
The 20GB should go for $299, and the 60GB for $399. They’ll be shipping next week.
What’s the device named, you ask? The iPod. That’s it, just The iPod. Well spare you the Prince jokes. The iPod will have TV out.

Black is good. I love my Pismo. It hides rought treatment better than the white and aluminum cases. I couldn't care less about videophone built in. I don't particularly want to look at someone or have them see me. Better battery life, a second removable hard drive for inline backup and a rugged machine are more important.

Apple, or Apple marketing? The decision to include PowerBooks in today's event, vs. releasing them separately (but likely still soon) is a MARKETING choice. And not a bad one I don't think: until Intel, the PowerBooks are unlikely to get a really big update. So keep it low-key. Makes sense not to include them in this event. Keep an eye on the coming Tuesdays.
If you think this means Apple's not interested in portables, remember that portables are one of the driving reasons behind a HUGE Apple project: the Intel transition.

Lost faith in Apple?
Can anyone actually CONFIRM that the 7448 is avaiable in quantity yet?
Can you guys not understand that Apple would love to sell you a better PowerBook, but can't until they can actually MANUFACTURE them?
You think Steve Jobs and crew are sitting around the conference table, going "Update the PowerBooks, one of our highest margin, most expensive products? NAhhhhhh....."

I really NEED a new PB to work on... I just cant justify the purchase considering the current hardware. Argh! Why does OSX have to be sooo good... I have no choice but to wait

Show and share
Use the optional iPod A/V cable to play videos and photo slideshows with music on your TV. Or combine the new Apple Remote with an optional iPod Universal Dock to control your music, videos and slideshows from across the room.

My comments:
* A full "video iPod" never made sense for most people. It's too soon (if ever) and would have been perceived as a failure.
* Adding video to the MUSIC iPods as a cool extra (one you can always just ignore) makes good sense.
* Love the bigger screen and thinner body. Even the 60 is thinner than the old 20! This plus the nano makes a great lineup. They'll sell tons.
* Playing clips from my own camera would be cool, assuming you can play any clips you want. (I assume iTunes converts video to iPod-ready form, just like with photos.)
* TV (limited selection at first) and music videos on iTunes and iPods? No revolution for me, but a great step to take. A foothold in new areas, and a fun option for users to have. I might even buy one or two.... and paying double to get video vs. just the song doesn't bother me at all. (Especially if the music is full quality and can be shuffled with my music library like any other song? That would be welcome.)
* New iMacs--with built-in camera and remote control? How cool is that? (Now when will Apple make them in black?) iMacs are the fun (and unexpected) part of today, for me. (Did I mention selling tons?)
* The simplicity of an iMac contrasted with a "media center" PC is humorous, even if they aren't really parallel products.
* New PowerMacs and PowerBooks? The wait continues... hang in there. Next week?

Anyone else look in the tech specs? Looks like no firewire on the new Video iPods just like the Nanos. And that to me sucks, because regardless of whether USB2 is supposed to be able to hit 480 and firewire 400. Firewire still seems way faster to me. That's very disappointing about something that otherwise would have me pretty excited.

Seriously, we'll probably just have an Apple update every other week until Christmas. How would that be for hyping up holiday shopping?
So, iTunes 5 is basically a joke? I guess that they needed an excuse to get to iTunes 6 for 2006, so the inclusion of buying videos worked for them. Still...

That's too bad, I don't see FW as an option on the Specs page. I can see it's not important to MOST iPod buyers, but on a large-capacity iPod it makes sense. And for me: I need to be able to boot from my iPod, which I don't think USB allows (correct me if I'm wrong). Guess I did well to get the older 60 :)

Hopefully we'll see a shiny new black ipod shuffle the death of the U2 ipod and the ability to download last weeks network tv programs. I don't want to ever have to use my Tivo or VCR again. .99 - 1.99 for a network download seems about right. Lost, Desperate Housewifes,Alias...Night Stalker. Hopefully the video enabled
I really don't understand where the black ipod shuffle is and the $19.99 custom color ipod options???

Wow, I'm stunned
I didn't think they would release a tiny video iPod to watch music videos!?!? Oh well, they replace the current top photo iPods so I guess they will sell. Not sure the music video sales however.
Makes sence why the ads didn't focus on videos as this isn't a true video iPod in a PVP sense.
