Feels wierd on the sides.
If I could put it on top I would, but that menu bar thingie would have to go somewhere though....

Left side is so... so... Windows.
Have to flip it off whenever I use an astronomy program called Skychart 3, as the windows for that program use every bit of screen real estate.

On the right, pinned to the bottom. Can't stand it on the bottom. It's also borderless and without a background. Just works best for me that way.
springscansing - why would having it on the right 'screw up the icons kinda'? They just bounce sideways rather than up and down if that's what you're getting at...

i think he means the desktop icons.
i used to keep mine on the right. ive tried the top and bottom. the top would probably be best but windows pop up behind it and you cant move them without moving the dock.
the right was good because it places the trash in the bottom right corner where we are used to it.
i like to have my dock and adium contact list visible at all times so the sides make the most sense. the buddy list on the left with the dock just below it (pinned to the bottom and of course transparent). all my application windows then take up the whole screen minus the left couple of centimeters. if the dock was on the bottom i would lose too much vertical space which is far more important than horizontal space (especially for web browsing).
icant really recall why i moved it to the left. the left always felt so windows like and anti -intuitive. but i think it was the desktop icons (though i usually keep the desktop empty) they wouldnt position themselves properly with a right handed dock.

I put mine on the right. I figured it would be best on the side, especially since I have a PowerBook G4 and real estate to the sides is more abundant that up and down.

I have mine on the left hand side of my left screen, leaving the right screen nice a tidy :)
And small. That way it doesn't interfere with icons on the desktop much. You'd think Apple would make the desktop Respect The Dock... oh well, it works fine for me.

I prefer it either on the left or the bottom, and it's usually on the left, gives you more free space towards the right and the bottom. And it doesnt really remind me of windows either, having it on the bottom did.....

Dec 9, 2002, 05:19 PM
well it was on the bttm forever but i discovered that on my TiBook its just easier to not have it keep popping up when i am doing things if its on the left. dont have enough up down space.
and whats with saying on the left its so windows? windows puts it on the bttm....though you can move it just like in OSX...oh well

I have mine in bottom right, with Proteus (IM client) on the top right. I don't have problem with icons as I don't have ANY icons on the desktop:) When I do have network drive connected and it is on the desktop, I just collapse the Proteus window (I use WindowShade X) and I can access the icon anyway. Works great with my widescreen TiBook:) If only I can hack the dock so it doesn't magnifies past the bottom of the screen, i.e. the Trash icon 'stick' to the bottom and the dock expands upward only. Anyone knows how to do this?

I do. Closest to the mouse hand. It's a pain since I have it on hidden mode and it's annoying to get too close when I'm trying to scroll down.
But I have more real estate east-west than north-south and like an earlier poster said... left is too Windows.

you can use apps like onyx (and probably many others) to change the default options. you can have top/bottom and left/right as options as well.
so top left, bottom right etc are all possible :)
i think it's even possible to have the dock at the top with some apps.
messedkid
Jun 14, 2008, 11:53 AM
For awhile, I had it set to the left side, but not centered. It was in the bottom/left corner.
I also did not have any apps in the Dock, apart from Finder, Dashboard and Trash. I used quicksilver to launch all apps and all the dock was for was to show what apps are up and running. Had the dock scaled down too, and had my adium contact list right above it...but then if alot of people were online, and I had quite a few apps/documents open at once, they would overlap..and I didn't like that.
I'm back to the default dock setting now. :) Bottom + Centered.

I put mine on the bottom, pinned to the right. It's usually hiding though. This puts the Trash/Eject icon at the (mostly) correct place, and doesn't move about depending on the number of items in the Dock.

On the right side, I can't stand it on the bottom on my MBP, because my fingers block the view while I'm typing, while laying down that is. But I've grown to prefer it on the right anyhow, much easier for me.
And I don't know who even needs the desktop, I use spaces and everything is full screen that I use on the spaces, sometimes I forget there is even a desktop. :p

When I first got my macbook (i believe it was 10.4.2 at the time) the dock HAD to be the exact width as the hinge of the monitor. If I had to open another item, another document or added a new app to my dock, I would resize the dock to match the hinge width.
Then I got into a phase where I would use the college library iMacs...which had the dock littered with every app imaginable. iLike 06, iWork, CS2, Office 2004. 5 different browsers, 3 different IM clients. Media players out the ying-yang. It was useless to have so many of the same type of application, but I liked the "full" look. So I went to my mac and added every app I had installed to my dock. So I had quick access to all apps. :D
*sigh*
such a mess when I think about it now. Now I only have about 5-6 apps on the dock at all times, 2 stacks (downloads and documents) and use quicksilver. I also don't like using my mouse, and try to use my trackpad as little as possible. Using an app launcher and keyboard shortcuts is so much faster. (once you get the hang of it of course. :P

I dont think i can have it anywhere but on the bottom. I typically have my adium buddylist on the left handside, safari window in the middle, and Instant message box on the right handside.
I might give dock position on the left a shot, i would like the added space its giving me, but i would be screwing my self with finding a place for my buddylist!

bottom, hiding, no magnification.
My dock only has a few applications. Unlike some people, I recognize the fact that I don't use 50 different applications every day. My dock has:
Finder
Safari
Art Of Illusion (A free 3D art and animation program... I use it a few times a week.)
Pages
Keynote
Numbers (Admittedly, I don't use this very often, but it wouldn't be right to have Pages and Keynote by themselves.)
iTunes
iMovie HD (Not really sure why now that I think about it...)
Garage Band (Yeah... maybe I aught to remove these...)
EyeTV Lite (A keeper. I use it several times a week to record various shows on Fox.)
System Preferences (Mmmm... I havn't changed anything in so long... I jsut keep it there I guess so my dock can look complete.)
Stickies (I have lots of stickies that I jot the random applications ideas I have throughout the day... most will never see the light of day though...)
Application Stack (Not really my application folder... this contains the 20 or so applications that I use regularly but not daily... like Xcode, Interface Builder, Taco HTML, iWeb, Tinker Tools, Text Edit, Skype, Audio Hijack, Grapher, Photo Booth, Mail...)
Game Stack (Short cuts to all the games on my computer... WarCraft III, StarCraft, Quakes I-IV, Doom 1-3, WingNuts 2, and DarwiinRemote... admittedly not a game but I like playing StarCraft/WarCraft III using a wiimote.)
Homework Stack (All my homework, notes, projects, etc., from school sorted by year/class in a hierarchy view.)
Programming Stack (All my programming projects, sorted by platform (Mac OS X, Touch OS X, or other,) and actual project.)
Download Stack (Almost nothing... everything gets sorted almost instantly... most of it goes in the trash.)
What was the point of me saying all that? Oh, right, no magnification is necessary. Everything is so organized, my dock isn't crowded, I don't need the magnification.

Has anyone bought this type of sling shot before that holds the amo in the handle? http://www.liangdianup.com/sporting_1.htm
this company has free shipping to anywhere in the world and they guarantee delivery to Australia. I heard that sling shots
are ok to sell in Australia as long as you say they are being used to toss bait in the water when you go fishing, any truth
to thatone?

Left interferes with the toolbars in every Adobe app, right interferes with palettes and scroll bars, so bottom and hidden seems to cause the least amount of damage for me.
Still, bottom is the hardest to get to since your wrist can flick to the left, top, and right easily, bottom is a bit harder and usually requires at least two wrist flicks with a mouse pick-up in between. :p

My dock is on the left. On a widescreen monitor it makes more sense to take away horizontal screen real estate instead of making your screen even shorter and cutting down on the viewing area for websites.

Another vote for the bottom. Tried it on the right and all it did was make the bottom look weird.

Left and hidden, I bought my first powerbook used and thats where it was, so thats how I got used to it... But even when I tried it on the bottom I still hid it, it takes up so much room on a 15" screen if you don't

bottom, and I didn't care for the Leopard 3D look so I have it set with the Tiger appearance.

Right is the only right place on my laptops.:) Tried it all places and it interferes the least. Especially w. scroll gestures.
Left when using an external monitor or larger display.

It's where the Dock is destined to be.
But I always wanted to put it on the left while I had the Windows Taskbar at the bottom when running VMWare or Parallels. Didn't work too well, though.

Bottom, and not hidden. I like having a small spot to raise the whole window up a little.

Right, anchored to the top, only showing opened apps and a few stacks (downloads, favorites, recently opened)

Looks better on the bottom but kept trying it on the right until I got addicted to the extra vertical real estate and then I couldn't go back - so middle right, visible, almost smallest size icons with magnification and genie effect.

On the right side. Having it on the bottom on a MacBook with 1280x800 resolution will reduce vertical space to almost nothing... which is extremely annoying.

Left side is so... so... Windows.
But I have more real estate east-west than north-south and like an earlier poster said... left is too Windows.
I know I'm a little bit late, but can someone explain to me why on earth would the dock on the left remind you of Windows?
I prefer it either on the left or the bottom, and it's usually on the left, gives you more free space towards the right and the bottom. And it doesnt really remind me of windows either, having it on the bottom did.....
Or, why should the dock on the bottom remind you of Windows either? I mean, isn't the default placement for the dock at the bottom anyway?

Bottom or hidden at the bottom. The only way to go for me. :)

To save mouse travel distance* and screen space: Left and hidden.
*On OSX all the buttons and menues are on the very top of the screen. So having the dock on the left is the nearest possible location
Additionally it's worth to note that I barely use it, as a pro user I prefer Quicksilver instead.
