Having grown up with the Smurfs, the video certainly does its intended purpose. Definitely thought-provoking, and indeed, it's scary:

It has an impact because it can be seen. Even it they are Smurfs. The media chooses to ignore the vast majority of death and destruction. If it were shown on a daily basis, it would have an effect on how people feel about the war.

uh, i don't think it was intended as comic relief... i think it's meant as a serious attempt to get people's attention, because images of actual people get ignored, as people are desensitized... the idea is, sadly, we'll be more sensitive to something like a childhood cartoon being butchered than real humans.
