A Performa 575, which was a rebranded LC 575 and had the crippled 68LC040 processor. It always made me sad to see the error say, "You need an FPU!" I won't go through all my subsequent Apple purchases, although the first Macintosh that I actually purchased on my own was my iMac.
As a child, I even saved up all my allowance to buy Mac OS 8 the day it came out. :)

My first Apple computer was an Apple llGS which I bought in the Fall of 1986. I used it until 1993 when I bought a Mac Centris 610. With enhancements and software, I had about $1800 invested in my llGS. I sold it in 1993 for $1200 cash. What a great deal on holding value. I had 2 people wanting to buy it for $1200.
Since my Centris, I've had a G3 and currently have a G4. Mac Pro is next on my agenda to purchase.

A Mac Classic, circa 1991 or so.
First computer, period, was a 286, back around 1988ish.
Since then, I've owned (off the top of my head):
1) A Pentium 120 (ended its life with 64 Megs of RAM, IIRC).
2) A Pentium 233MMX (served from 1997ish through 2001, my longest-serving computer).
3) A Celeron 667.
4) A Celeron 1 Ghz (Ended up with my parents).
5) A 386 Notebook, running Windows 3.1 (carried to High School).
6) A Pentium II 266 Mhz Notebook.
7) A 1.6 Ghz Pentium IV Desktop
8) A Celeron M HP Notebook (Jack came loose, fixed and sold).
9) A G3 700 Mhz iBook with 640 Megs of Ram, running Tiger (with my sister).
10) A G3 Lombard Powerbook (With my father).
11) A MacBook 1.83 Ghz, with 2 Gigs of Ram (Malfunctioned and returned).
12) A generic Toshiba notebook (Core Solo-based Celeron) with 2 Gigs of Ram.
13) A G4 500 Mhz TiBook.
12) A 2.66 Ghz Pentium D Desktop.
Also, I've got another Lombard and a Powerbook 1400cs in the mail. The Lombard should get here tomorrow.

Thats an interesting question:
The first computer in my house was one that I built for the local science fair in 1976. It was about 2 feet high x 6 feet wide (in 3 sections arranged as a half a hexagon) x 14 inches deep. The entire computer was wired with over 8.5 thousand feet of wire, all operations were conducted via toggle switches (well over 400 seperate switches ranging from DPDT to rotary SP). There was a manually operated punch card reader at the top. All operations had to be first encoded into binary, entered via the panel switches, the results read off a panel of lights (8 + 1 bulbs per strip x 16 strips). The results were then reentered on a seperate panel which converted the binary output back to decimal form.
The first commercial computer was a kit called a Sinclair ZX-81 which had to be assembled. (We had two of these and then eventually a third preassembled version called a Timex-Sinclair which was essentially the same).
The first Apple computer in the house was an Apple IIc which is still floating around fully functional. (I keep wondering when the media on the old 5.25 inch floppies is going to die)

My first Mac was given to my family by my grandfather after he bought a new one. I don't know how old it was, but I it was a Fat Mac. Anyway, we used that very lightly for taxes and stuff until 1997, when we got a Dell with Windows 95. We later got three more Dells with XP, a desktop in Nov. 2001, a laptop in spring 2002, and another desktop in Dec. 2002, which complimented each other as I am part of a large family. Well, iTunes led to iPod which led to me getting a C2D Macbook.
I love it!

My first Mac was a IIcx.
I'd been using Macs since the Plus came out. It was my dream to own a Mac for my music work, but I simply couldn't afford an SE, so I'd been using Steinberg Pro24 on an Atari 1040ST for three years.
Then I inherited a little bit of cash, just when the cx came out. A Mac IIx in a smaller case. Perfect.
Total cost of the machine was something like £3500 here in the UK.. .which got you:
16MHz 68030
40MB hard disk
1MB memory (later upgraded to a whole 4MB!)
4-bit video card - yes, a whole 16 colours (later upgraded to 8-bit)
Apple 13" colour monitor - Sony Trinitron, ran at 640 x 480 only. Cost £700 on its own. And weighed a ton!
Original MacII standard keyboard. I wish modern keyboards still felt like that keyboard... clackety-clack, but superbly built. If it had function keys I'd get an ADB to USB adaptor and keep using it!
Applications that saw a lot of use on that machine:
Opcode Vision
MacDraw Pro
PageMaker, Freehand
Think C
HyperCard
And not a big gamer, but who remembers these?..
Crystal Quest
Dark Castle
Spaceship Warlock (was it called? Early CD-ROM game. Damn, anyone else remember when CD-ROM first came out? My 1x external SCSI drive cost £400 and you had to use caddies for the discs. Forced to get one because all the Apple developer stuff came on CD).
Spaceward Ho! - hysterically funny network space strategy game
I still have the cx. Just never got around to selling it. Boxed and as new, manuals, everything (apart sadly, from the monitor sadly, which was stolen). Any collectors out there?

First family mac was an Apple II. First Mac I used was either the first Macintosh 512k that was in use at my library at school, or the Mac II which were in the computer labs. First Mac I owned was a Classic. Never looked back. I think it was the experience of using the Mac IIs (great machines) in the computer labs that always stuck with me, and shaped my Mac experience.

He still works although I haven't powered him up for about a year. He has his own bedroom, or at least, he does till the kids come along and my OH considers him nothing but a big purple paperweight. I've told OH he'll go before Ozzie does!

Aloha everyone,
I am also on my first two Macs, a 20" Core Duo iMac and a 15" Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. In my defense, I only switched over to the light last August :D
I am definitely NOT going back!!! In fact, my goal is to get another Mac (preferably a Mac Pro :D ), give my wife the iMac, and get the PCs all out of the house!

After yet another round of problems with our Windows computer network.
I decided to switch to Mac, All I can say is the truth is in the simple logical user interface. My maintenance is down to..... I forgot the last time that I had a problem. I purchased a imac g4 800, then a imac g5, mac mini, ibook g4,and now a MPB, also an airport extreme, and an airport express.
Everything networks together. we all share a single printer.
try that with a windows system. and have it work every time without hours of replacing drivers or what ever fix that needs to be implemented.
The cost of the macs are very good. people tend to discount there time involved in the regular issues that pop up with windows.
I figure productivity is up. cost are down
Thank you Apple

Our agency bought four Mac Plus' in the mid 1980's. One MB RAM expandable to four! Sounds abosultely absurd today, but they were fantastic machines and I've been loyal to Mac since. At home I bought a 7200, then an emac, now an imac. PC users have difficulty learning to use MacOS, because Macs are too easy...too few steps to accomplish your task. PC users can't understand that. tee, hee.

iMac G5 20' iSight
I got it as a Christmas gift in Dec. of 05 and love it!
I use to hate all things mac. In fact what really put me off Macs in the beginning was my school, mom, and no gaming.
My school was Mac classics. Monochrome screen, one button mice, in 1997, was old even then. I thought "is this the best they(Apple) has???"
Then my mom got a G3 Powerbook "bronze keyboard". My mom is a professor and the college bought it for her to use. It was a lemon. The ram was to little to begin with(simple fix you'd think). The ram upgrade shot the computer to hell. Then the track pad broke. She used the "hockey puck" mouse. The HD failed and had to be replaced twice. Finally the "E" key broke and the machine was put away in 2001.
Of course after I got a Mac, I took the broken G3 Powerbook and pulled out the HD and used it as a portable HD for 1.5 years. The HD gave out though as Tech Tool Pro said every sector was bad. Don't know what happened. So that would have been the third HD to fry.
- Scott
O, and one night I went up to that college and took a bunch of the old Apple rainbow stickers from a store room. All the old Macs where sitting in a forgotten storage room untill last month. No I didn't "steal" any Macs. There was a lot of history in that room.

I never wanted a computer. My husband said we had to have one.
I was a painter and graphic artist very happy in the messy world of my studio. The closest I got to anything techie was my airbrush.
The computer was delivered when I was at home and my husband at work. I opened the box, took out the machine, and could swear there was a hypnotic buzz begging me to awaken it.
I gave up my studio shortly thereafter......

Indigo iMac G3/500MHz (Summer 2001 model) running OS X 10.0.3. It came with OS 9 as standard with a 10.0.3 install CD bundled in the box. I loathe OS 9 so the machine got X installed within hours. 10.0.3 was something of a nightmare but it was good enough. Happy days spent browsing the web with unaliased fonts in Internet Explorer and the swisher but less compatible iCab.
Between 2001 and 2004 it got an Airport card added, slowly upgraded from 128MB to 1GB RAM and I replaced its internal 20GB drive with a 120GB model. So quite a tricked-out little box :)
It still runs 10.3.9 (10.4, although running fine, was a little slow with things like Dashboard). It still runs fine although the CRT's a bit odd - white areas such as the OS X login box cast a purplish shadow over the remaining right side of the screen. Degaussing doesn't help, sadly.

My first Apple product was a 4GB pink iPod mini, which I bought in October of 2004 on a trip to Los Angeles. I left with an iPod that I still have to this day (despite it assuming retired status since the purchase of my 80GB 5.5G six months ago) along with a contempt for Best Buys that has endured long after I got back on home soil.
My first Apple computer was an eMac 1.25GHz in mid-2005. This is still my main computer.
My next computer will be a MacBook - although whether it'll be a BlackBook or a MBP is yet to be decided.

It was a power house for me, also never died. Although the HD crashed and wiped out completely due to a terrible electrical and water short circuit in the house. When I was in 5th grade my brother talked my dad into buying an Apple IIc because "everyone had one". I still remember that big apple box under the chistmas tree that year. My dad was pretty mad when he realized that not everyone actually had a computer and he just spent a load of cash to get us one. Soon though, I introduced him to the game Lode Runner and we spent hours and hours creating different levels for each other to try to conquer. I used that computer all the way through high school when I got a 486 to go off to college with.

I ended up waiting a bit longer than just January. The G5's were due and the rumors flying, so I ended up getting a 1.8GHz G5 PowerMac in the Fall of 2003. In the Fall of 2005, I added a 1.5GHz G4 12" Powerbook to our household.
The G5 is now four years old getting a bit topped out...it needs a second round of HD and RAM upgrades. Don't think that I'll go for a Mac Pro this year unless a really nice upgrade comes through.

That's awesome. Way to get the most out of your mac. I think soon I'm going to get a mac pro because I really want the expandability. If it lasts me as long as yours that'd be amazing.

"As long as"? My G5 isn't even 4 years old yet. If it didn't last at least this long, I'd be complaining.
The Macintosh paradigm is that you pay more for it upfront, but you get that investment back because it lasts longer...as such, your cost per month ends up being lower...
...and that doesn't even include theoretical resale: as per eBay, it looks like I could easily get $800 for my current system.
A $2400 system now worth $800 = $1600, divided by 45 months of ownership & use = $35/month.
It is hard to keep track of the hardware extras over time (which is why Windows fans tend to miscalculate their true lifecycle costs and underestimate how much their system really has cost them), but I figure that I've added ~$800, including the HD+RAM bump I just ordered yesterday. As such, this adds an extra +$18/mo, which takes me up to a lifecycle cost of $53/month as of this instant...
...but for each month that it "just works" and I don't buy any more hardware upgrades, this number will drop by around $1/month. So I'll easily get back under $50/month by later this year.

The first family computer was a Performa 6200. However, the first computer that was 100% mine was my Power Macintosh 4400/200. I got it for 1¢ and $100 shipping with a Macintosh Color Display, AppleDesign Keyboard, and ADB Mouse II.

Oh I know that the G5 has a hell of a lifespan left on it. I was talking about your 8600 which you seemed to juice pretty well. What ended up happening to it?

My first was a Performa 550, then I purchased the Power PC upgrade kit that would switch the machine between 68K mode and PPC mode. I still have the computer sitting in storage after the HD quit when the kids were playing games on it.

Mac Pro....
I used them all the time on my degree, G5's, G4's, iMacs, eMacs, I'd even used one of the old SE's many many years ago back when I was still in primary school, but I just never had enough of my own money to get one until this year.
Now I don't have a Windows installation in my room :D, 2 macs, 2 pcs, no Windows. Brilliant.

Nothing about the Mac or OS X excited me until I saw the Keynote where Jobs introduced Tiger. It simply blew me away. That summer I bought a 12" PB and since only use Windows at work. It isn't so bad because the IT department has stripped out all nonessential things to make them some amazing Windows systems.

The 3-month old Mac Pro I am typing on is my first Mac. My MacBook Pro is my second.
Apple was always this mysterious "thing" out there. I never even touched a Mac until I walked into an Apple store to buy an iPod. So I got the iPod, iTunes seemed to work just great, then Vista showed up, and sanity took over and I bought a Mac. Pretty typical story I am guessing.

My first Mac was a Performa 600CD, 4MB RAM, 160MB HD. This unit ran on the Motorola 68030 CPU.
I wanted it to scan and display photos from my vast print collection. Then store them on CDs. Bought a Umax scanner with it. After some frustration, found I had RAM (maxed out at 68MB, I think) and video memory to 1MB in order to view and store at decent resolution.
One month after I bought this, Apple came out with more powerful Macs based on the Motorola 68040 CPU. I was caught off guard and po'd!

Goes back aways. My first Apple was a IIe. If memory serves me, 64KB of RAM, and 2 5 1/4" floppies, one being external. I think the floppies were 360KB? But not sure, single sided though.
Now it's different Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro, and my latest an iPhone.
And the day Apple releases an ultra-light laptop, I'm getting it!
I love all things Apple, and their customer support has been peerless.

I have only used one Apple computer. I cannot remember the model, since I was 13, and knew nothing about computers at the time. Looking at the pictures, I think it was an Apple Classic, but I cannot be sure. It had programs like Hypercard, which fascinated me at the time. I wish I could have one now for nostalgic reasons.

The first Mac that I owned was a 1GHz 15" Titanium PowerBook. I bought it the summer before I started college in 2003. I was a bit upset when they came out with the Aluminum PowerBooks a few months later, at the same price. Still, I loved that laptop for four years, hinge problems and all. I was sad when I had to sell it to help pay tuition.

First Mac was a Mac Plus. Eventually upgraded it to 4MB of RAM (woohoo!) and, of course, had to clip the resistor. I also added an 80MB Seagate SCSI external HDD to it, and an external (third party, can't remember the brand) floppy drive.
Later, somewhere around my late sophomore or junior year of high school, I got a Everex MD2400 2400 baud modem (thing looked like a cross between an aircraft carrier and an airplane, and had a built-in speaker phone!). I also got a Logitech three button mouse and a (Kensington, I think) external keyboard for it. And, naturally, I got the padded case to transport it around.
Good times, happy times. I still have the box for it in my garage. I do miss it sometimes.
