Is the max screen resolution for the new iPod 320x240 or 480x480 I have read both reports?

The display is 320 x 240 pixels. The 480 x 480 is the top MPEG 4 resolution it can process (this will of course be scaled to fit the 320 x 240).

so is 320x240 better (it saves space, i'm guessing? and it doesn't need to be scaled?)?

Oh ok -- I see. So the only point of the 480x480 would be for using the line out option and displaying it on a TV?

No, I think the TV output is 320x240 too. The iPod TV out only mirrors what is displayed on the screen. Basically, it's just the biggest file that the iPod can deal with. You could also probably display lower-resolution videos that would be scaled up to 320x240. The video chip in the iPod has a narrow range of abilities so that it can do what it does really well.
