According to this article, the connectors are different. The 2012 has a wider redesigned SATA 3 connector.

Apple's new Ivy Bridge-equipped MacBook Air features a design largely the same as its predecessor, though a few minor tweaks have been implemented, most significantly a redesigned connector for the flash memory module.

Opinions aren't necessary. The connector has changed. (The 2010 and 2011 models shared a connector. I have a 256GB SSD from a 2011 in my 2010 11.6.)

You could try and force it, but you might do some damage.
