Is a 27 inch iMac a good investment or should I purchase a NEC multisync display for 1200. I currently have a MacBook Pro 17 Mid 2010

Depends.....

in what are you doing/planned uses for the upgrade. Maybe if you elaborate more or provide more info, anyone can weigh in and help you.

Some considerations come to my mind.....

1)-The planned upgrade brings you a nice improvement in terms of screen real state. Use of palettes and menus can be better, for example.Thing with iMac is, are tools for color correction? Same thing with the monitor you mention.

2-How well your current workflow/peripherals integrate with the iMac. Can be enhaced and your production improves?

Hope my post helps you think and consider more wider issues. Not saying your original considerations/thinking are not worthwhile.

27" 2013 imac is more than capable of every design task as long as you have 16 gigs of ram.

Kind of strange choices.

The iMac is a better computer with or without a screen.

NEC makes multiple models with the PA series (perhaps there is a newer series) that are meant to be used for graphics and thus intended for proper calibration from the get go. You didn't say which model so no way to know if its worth the price.

Obviously if its the graphics version and you have the bucks, get both the iMac and the NEC.

I use a Mac Mini quad 2.0 with a 24" NEC PA24IW and with the 16 gigs of RAM, it works well for photo work. Your mileage may vary.

I was looking at the nec pa271w I currently could use it with my macbook pro mid 2010...the imac would upgrade both but does the screen even compare with the NEC

For cost of the NEC I went with the Dell 3011. According to the specs is has a slightly wider color gamut. The extra screen real estate doesn't hurt either.

You dont need a $1200 monitor unless you know you need one because you are wasting money using a regular monitor. If you have to ask if you should get one then you dont need it.

I heard that the NEC has more accurate colors and not too glossy for graphic images. I just prefer a less glossy screen for graphics work.

I work in a studio of 40 designers and not one moans about using a glossy imac screen. After a couple of days your used to it and it's not an issue.
