I own a 2009 Mac Mini with a SSD I installed myself - it's running 10.8.3

I Just purchased a 2012 Mini, and want to swap its hard drive for my 2009's SSD

Can i just do a straight out swap and not have to clone, etc etc

you could clone your SSD to an external drive and boot from it on the new 2012 to see if there are any configuration issues. I know you said you don't want to clone, but this cloning is more to run a test first. If it works ok on booting from the clone I do not see why it would not be the same with booting from the SSD (once installed in the new 2012).
