What is the smallest and cheapest ssd drive that would work with mac mini (late 2012)? I am just looking to run OS, XBMC and plex server on the ssd. Nothing else

Don't forget that the small ones are often more comparable in speed to 7200 rpm drives than to the current top SSD's.
I ended up buying an OZC Vertex 3 60Gb for a cheap-ass PC I have. That one is still among the fast ones. It was 65 bucks.
And for a SSD it is important to have some head-room. So if your apps total at say 20Gb now, that is pretty tight on a 32Gb drive.

I'm debating getting a mac mini for htpc/media transcoder running linux with xbmc and plex or building my own and running linux.
Linux is a requirement (unfortunately!) to play HD-Audio. For the form factor of the mac mini is a big selling point for me. To build something "close" to that form factor with the same power will cost about the same

I have some dts-ma/truehd rips (movies that deserve such a rip). I agree, the DTS 1536kbit tracks sound great
I also have plenty of flac, some 24 bit

Where do you play it on then? It asks some serious speakers and a decent amp to hear the difference between DTS and DTS HD. I can't play HD BR sound, but I can't tell the difference between SuperAudio CD (comparable to 5.1 192khz/24bit) and regular DTS (48khz/20bit).

I have a denon avr and MK sound speakers. I can tell the difference in some scenes in some movies. So I guess if I went with a mac mini, I would be able to live with the issue
