I am getting a little upset because I can't update my ipod.....
I am on a mac now and i guess i cant update my ipod because it is a windows formatted ipod? in support it says i have to restore my ipod before i can update but I dont want to lose everything i have on it?
Can i do this without restoring it or is there an easy way to back up my ipod?
Thank you so much for any help.

I presume you've switched from a Windows PC to the Mac. If that's the case, it would be best to move all your iTunes music from your PC to the Mac, reformat ("restore") the iPod to Mac format, then re-copy your music back to it.
Trying to manage a PC-formatted iPod from a Mac I believe is possible, but it'll be a real pain in the you-know-what unless you're fairly computer-savvy.
If you don't have access to the music files on the PC anymore (i.e., the only copy you have is on the iPod), you'll have to try to pull the music off the iPod from the hidden music folder on it. For Mac-formatted iPods, I know there are freeware programs that'll do this for you. For PC-formatted iPods connected to a PC, I presume similar programs exist.
The iPod was designed to transfer music only one-way (from Mac/PC to iPod, but not iPod to computer), so you'll need a small utility to extract the music off the iPod. This is one such program: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15957
